They work very hard and continuous without breaks. I had to insist that they drink bottled water. They were friendly. We had all doors, frames and trim work done inside home, garage painted including inside of windows, 2 columns on front porch plus the shutters outdoors. It looks so clean. I do not regret choice I made after interviewing them. JS Handyman does other handy work, too, if needed.

David and the rest of the team at D&D are awesome. David gave me a rough quote with the contents that I had and I ended up having way more than expected. David stuck to the original quote although I felt it was worth more. I have a bunch of heavy odd shaped furniture and moved into a house with narrow hallways and doors. Not a single scratch! Professional, hard working and funny group. I hope I never have to move again but will definitely call these guys when I do! Thanks again David! There is a good reason that D&D has 5 stars from everyone that has used them!

Ms. Charity and her team came in and spent approximately 2 1/2 hours cleaning my house from top to bottom - baseboards, floors, doors, bathrooms, kitchen counters, microwave, top of stove and oven drawer, window sills, blinds and windows. They dusted everything, vacuumed, and even moved my refrigerator and cleaned behind it, too! They were very professional and courteous and exceeded my expectations. I will definitely use Custodial Management Services again in the future!

Josh replaced an exterior door on my home and I could not be more pleased with the work. Equally important to me, was his dependability and communication. He was there when he said he would be, went over and above my expectations and took great pride in doing the job right. Impressive and pleasant young man who will be my go to guy for any work I need done in the future!

Mr. Rod Domingos was hired to do a hallway bathroom at home my five bedroom/ three bath home. The job was pretty extensive and would need to be gutted, replacement of tile, fixtures, shower door and laboratory. Rod accessed the project and had vision that really gave me insight into his talent. The project was expected to be about a week and actually took about 5 or 6 days, I was amazed considering the amount of work and the artistic detail in the tile job, it was quite remarkable. He has impecable taste and it reflected in his tile choices. He is very neat and lined the floor as not to track up my hardwood floors, that kind of consideration is priceless. My bathroom is everything I asked for and I would highly recommend him to anyone trying to improve thier home or new construction. He is truly among the up and coming. //awp

Bath, closet, and floor remodel. Eric moved and rebuilt walls to make new closets and enlarge the bathroom, patched the accompanying hardwood flooring, sheetrock, and trim, moved and reset interior and exterior doors, and covered an empty stairwell with gorgeous new pine flooring. He also made a unique and extremely handy plumbing access panel in the floor where the tub used to be. In everything he did, Eric was courteous, professional, hard-working, conscientious, and creative. He underbid this job, but refused to abandon it or go back on his bid. When I have another job requiring a handyman, Eric of Argyll Croix will be the first one I call, and if he's not available... I'll wait till he is.

They can do all types of home and yard improvement. I had my house painted, fence painted and a new door on the porch. They also found some wood riot and replaced the wood and painted it. When I signed up here I expected many responses but Casey Hoyles was the only one to respond. He came right out and his team was always timely and worked quietly and effectively. They were a literal answer to a prayer and my wife is very happy. I will always give them good references if asked. They are good Men and I wish them luck in the future and am already planning to do more work with them as we can afford it. Thank you Casey and team and Thumbtack.

The only thing that could have been better, was the weather. Tommy fully installed an exterior door in the rain! He was on time, efficient, and willing to do the job in the rain. We will definitely use him again for bigger projects.

Scott and Kashad are amazing! Together, they can provide improvement services that are second to none. If you are looking for a carpenter/contractor who knows his stuff and stands behind his work, that would be Scott. If you are looking for a great assistant, who is polite, helpful, learning quickly and strong, that would be Kashad. In our opinion, our project was overwhelming to say the least - our 20 year old vintage wood-paneled garage door was rotting from both the weather and a really bad paint job (please see first 3 photos below). The wood was rotting to a point that hinges were about to fall off and we thought the garage door would eventually fail. We were quoted a high price by several garage door companies to replace our vintage wood garage door with a "run of the mill", metal garage door. Hoping we could find someone with exceptional carpentry and painting skills, good math and measurement skills, we went on Thumbtack and found Scott's Home Improvements. Thank goodness we did because Scott had to rebuild the entire bottom horizontal row of wood panels on our wood garage door to repair the old wood garage door. To accomplish this tedious task, Scott meticulously examined the existing wood. He required 1/2 $ down for materials and soon found the closest match he could to the existing wood. Please let me tell you, Scott knows wood. Soon thereafter, the bottom panels were removed by Scott and Kashad with care and the hardware was kept close at hand. Scott was smart to disengage the garage door mechanism so we would not lower the remaining rows of the garage door by accident - sending them crashing to the floor below. In addition, Scott hung a tarp to keep our belongings safe and sound while the work took place. Most of the work was performed outside of the garage in our driveway - even in the coldest of temperatures to get the job done. Once the work began, Scott assembled the 20' bottom frame, by installing some and rebuilding most of the beveled wood panels and battens so they could finally connect each panel and wood batten inside the frame with perfection. Scott managed to replace the bottom row of panels on our garage door so well, that the garage door never looked so good! Amazingly to us, no one would ever know that the bottom 3 foot high by 20 foot wide row of panels/battens were replaced. Because Scott picked the right wood, once he stained the wood, it matched the other remaining rows above it exactly (inside and out). I think matching the stain was an art as well. To top the job off, Scott coated the exterior stain with a good polyurethane to protect the wood door from both the sun and weather. Wow, what a job well done. Thank you Scott and Kashad!

Charles did a perfect job for me. He was efficient, clean, kind and on time. He even went to Lowe's to get the supplies. I had to take out a portion of my granite counter top, and he was up for the task. I couldn't believe how fast he changed the locks on my doors. He was agreeable to do whatever I needed done. Thankfully he gave me his business card, I'll definitely use him for future projects.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

    Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

    • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
    • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
    • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
    • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
      • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
