Mr. Stanley is a truly outstanding ACT/SAT prep coach. With his efficient writing and reading techniques, I have been able to gradually improve my times as well as answer quality. His son, Costan, is also very helpful and informative math tutor. In fact, Costan may have taught me more than my math teacher at school has. The way that Costan distributes the material is very simple and easy to understand. He thourougly breaks the material down to the point where it is nearly impossible to not understand. Altogether, my experience with both Mr. Stanley and Costan has been a great one that has helped me find tremendous improvement.

We needed to find an SAT tutor for my daughter right away. I like the fact that Arbor allows you to switch tutors if you want to. Due to scheduling problem on our part, we ended up needing to switch to a different tutor. I simply sent an email and we immediately were given another tutor that fit into my daughter's new schedule.

I can't say enough about Bridge Tutoring. Audrey was amazing for my son. She was so professional and accommodating. His scores for the SAT was up considerably. She was also available at the last minute when he had a surprise test the next day. I would not hesitate to tell everybody how wonderful she was. I have tried other tutors in the past, but none of them compares to her. She is a 10!!!

I have to say that Prep by PAT has done an AMAZING job with my son!! My son was struggling with passing the reading part of the ACT. He's in fact took the ACT a couple of times and was unsuccessful with the reading part oh and forget the science...he bombed it!! It had gotten down to the nitty griddy, the now almost end of the school year, and this ACT is needed to GRADUATE!! There was only one more time to take this ACT and pass It to graduate. This is where Prep by PAT comes in!! They started tutoring my son twice a week for 3 weeks!!! After the first week my son expressed how much he had learned in just that little bit of time in fact he said he was able to use the skills he learned from Prep by PAT the first week on the FCAT! Well my son took his ACT and instead of getting a 19 on the reading which i believe is a passing score, he scored a whopping 33!!!! Yay!! And the science a 23!!! I mention the science because Prep by PAT squeezed in some pointers for passing the science part and my son was able to apply that and do great!!! I thank you Prep by PAT for your patience, and your love for what you do because if you didn't love it there is noooo way we would have seen these amazing results!!! We appreciate you!!!! Love you for life!!!!!

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Orduñez not only as math teacher but also as an SAT tutor. I have never had a professor explain mathematics with such ease. I made a 200 point improvement on the SAT after a few sessions with Mr. O and Mr. Elman. Their skills and techniques can help any student improve in standardized tests. They are experts in their respective subject areas and are outstanding educators. I would recommend MUST Tutoring Services to anyone.

My experience working with Barton of the Student Den as my SAT coach was amazing. I never thought I would have had such an understanding of all the material. All it took was one meeting a week for about 6 weeks and lots of dedication! For the first few weeks it's an overload of information and understanding what you need to work on, from there the most insanely helpful test tips are given and by the last two weeks all you want to do is prepare for your SAT. I would recommend Barton and the entire Student Den to everyone. Besides growing in the SAT curriculum, the skills I was assisted with are useful in all of my other test taking. While I just took my SAT post coaching (10/1), I am so confident my scores went up greatly. Besides knowing everything about math and reading, Barton is so personable and makes sure you're actually picking up on the material. I am a very visual person and by the first session, he already had noticed that and from there everything was written and out and explained in such detail! If you're not sure if SAT coaching is really useful, you have to check out the Student Den! At first i was skeptical, but I am so glad I started my SAT coaching.

This tutor was incredible! Really helped with getting me the high SAT score that I did. From the very basics to the extremely advanced, he knew how to explain every concept in a simple, easy to understand format. Even though I realized that I had forgotten many of the very basic concepts since graduation, he easily adjusted and explained every concept in a way which perfectly made sense to me. In no time at all I was learning on an advanced level, and I can’t thank him enough for his time. These are very personal lessons that were tailored to exactly what I needed, and all for a very fair price.

Dave single handedly converted my extremely under achieving 17 year old son into a confident standardized test taker. My son increased his SAT by over 200 points with Dave's tutoring and mentoring. My advice to anyone using Dave's services is to follow his directions explicitly. He knows how to improve your child's score.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

      • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
      • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
      • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
      • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
