Kevin Considine says, "We were looking to close in an existing carport under the main roof of our house in the City Of Tampa.....a couple of walls, windows and a door...like a good citizen, I tried to apply for a permit and to my dismay i could not apply for a permit, without a Sealed Blueprint/Drawing from a Draftsman or Structural Engineer......my first 3 weeks of trying to find a company who would even give me a quote(MOST COMPANIES SAID THIS WAS TOO SMALL OF A PROJECT FOR THEM TO DRAW A PLAN), only ended with me getting quotes in $4000 and above...for a simple plan. No electrical, no HVAC, no SF changes....and finally after almost giving up, I found Holmes Drafting Svcs...I dont even know how I found them....the way algorithms are, I think they showed up in one of my feeds or something...but thank goodness! I spoke with a well informed girl (sorry I think her name was Alexis????? sorry if not), and she set my mind at ease almost instantly after I explained my needs and pleaded for help....she pleasantly said Holmes Drafting is there to help! And Help they did. Kyle came to do a site visit and was quick and very descript in his explanation of the process. I immediately felt a weight being lifted of my shoulders....he adjusted the price and provided the quote for the scope of work, and it was even cheaper than estimated! Not only that...the process takes time...there's an initial drawing made then sent for approval or changes, (and I had a couple of small changes), then the actual sealed drawing sent...the entire thing traditionally takes at least a couple of weeks, but these guys were done in a week! We are so thankful!!!!Without a doubt...HOLMES DRAFTING SERVICES comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from the Considine family.....we rcvd no discount to provide a good review or anything extra....this review was EARNED...just have a conversation with Kyle and you will see, this man has a heart of gold and a strong head on hs shoulders..dont waste your time with any other drafting svc.Thank you again!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

On average, brick repairs will cost you around $500, with a range of between $350 and $600. However, be aware that a number of factors will have a large influence on this cost. First is the severity of the problem. Some brick repairs are as simple as applying new mortar — others require removing the brick entirely and fixing the substrate. If budget is a concern, contact several brick masons for cost estimates to find the best price in your area.

It depends. Sometimes, you might not require repair work — but you should still hire a professional to see if the cracks in your bricks are a serious threat to your home’s foundation and structural integrity.

Cracks (particularly larger cracks) can present a problem. If you have stair-step cracks or horizontal cracks, there may be an issue with your home’s foundation. Wider cracks can also allow water to infiltrate and cause damage from freezing and thawing. Insects can also enter wider cracks and cause more problems (and headaches).

If you have brick and stone repairs that need to be done, search for masonry services near you. Masons are skilled tradespeople and specialize in building and repairing stone, brick, concrete, tile and other similar materials on structures. They work with these materials as well as the mortar that holds them together and are the pro of choice when repairs are needed.

Hire the right mason based on the repairs you need — some masons specialize in working with brick, concrete, natural stone or other materials.

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

A stone mason builds structures like buildings, walls and piers out of stone. They may use natural stone, pre-cut stone, slabs or other types of stone to get the job done. Other jobs stone masons take on include laying walkways, curbs, pizza ovens and other structures or landscaping works. It’s common to hire a stone mason to perform certain parts of home building, such as an interior or exterior stone wall.

Crumbling bricks, otherwise known as spalling bricks, can often be repaired. The process involves removing and repairing the damaged mortar, cleaning the surface and then also removing any damaged bricks to prevent the problem from spreading. Contact a brick mason near you to fix your crumbling bricks.

In terms of the type of material used, there are several different types of masonry. These include brick, cast stone, glass block, concrete block and other types of building stone such as granite, limestone or marble. This type of construction is highly durable.
