It's a pleasure having Jim do work for us. He's polite, punctual and does a great job. We can always depend on him to get the work done in the time he says it will take. When he's finished he leaves everything as clean as it was before he started. If there's a better way to do the work, Jim will think of it. His prices are always very reasonable. He has done many jobs for us, including repairing a ceiling that had been badly damaged from a major leak. He also disassembled a defective 15 foot built in wall unit, sanded, repainted and reinstalled it. It looks better than it did when it was new! While other contractors told us the whole unit had to be replaced, Jim found a better, less expensive way to fix it.

We are new to the Sarasota area and did not have any reliable way to find good dependable contractors. I used Thumbtack to contact Kimball and Sons.Ryan Kimball and all of his crew were very professionall, punctual and did high quality work. he made sure that the subcontractors he called were also responsive to our needs. If you are looking for an excellent and trustworthy contractor...I would highly recommend Kimball and dons...

We got stood up by our last contractor who did not finish the job, so we called on Eric to make it right. He gave us a fair price upfront and got the work done quickly. He did a phenomenal job and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again.

Having to find someone to fix another contractor's mistakes is not a fun nor an enjoyable process. I contacted Mr. Service Pro and have been thoroughly satisfied and happy with the complete process. They came out, looked at my needs and provided me a detailed scope of the work to be done and costs associated. Once they started, they called in a specialist to finish out one aspect of the job which did not cost be anymore but, ultimately provided great peace of mind. When I need a handyman in the future, I know to call Mr. Service Pro, you should, too.

Freeman Enmeier is a complete professional. He came in to our commercial construction (church building) after having to fire a previous general contractor. We had lost over 7 months and thousands of dollars. The church was desparate. In came Freeman, fixed the mess and went above and beyond the call of duty. He tirelessly worked with myself, our architect, the city, and all our subcontractors with excellence in mind. Because of his diligence we received a grant award for coming in on schedule. At the end of the project he not only came in on time, but to our surprise UNDER budget. He actually passed on his savings to us. What a class act. We not only got a building but gained a friend. I have already asked him to be my personal contractor for my new home. I would recommend Freeman Enmeier for any project large of small. As he says... He bids the job, he DOES the job.

An all around must have professional job! The entire experience included clear and punctual communication, on time delivery of service, and a clean job with no mess left behind. The best part... if that wasn't enough, was the final product was absolutely seamless and my walls looked like they never had any damage. I am elated that I chose Melvin Bonds and will recommend you call him for your stucco project too!!!

I can do many things around the home including stucco, plumbing, electrical, drywall, tile, etc. I know how things should be done. I am not licensed to have the stucco done on this condo so I hired them to repair the stucco around a new through the wall air conditioner that had a 2" void on one side. I am 100% satisfied!!! My job was a little tricky, but I am sure they repaired my stucco job with more that enough cement to last for years. I thought I would have to go behind them and fill the extra void myself, but they did a great job. The price was reasonable. He keep in good contact and it is off my list. Just talk to him for a minute and you will trust him. He is honest and I am totally happy with the job.

Sal and Mike came to help me hang pictures ...may sound silly but as a single woman with lots of pictures I needed Help! I accepted their quote thinking I'd finally get some pictures hung and after a quick couple of hours I have an amazing layout of all my pictures including collage walls and hard To hang items. I have never worked with a team more professional than Sam and Yana. From the 1st time we met, they treated my house as if it was their own. They listened to my needs and made suggestions after I told them what I was looking for. I needed my two story house exterior painted and waterproofed along with my driveway and pool deck. They showed up every morning bright and early, on-time, and ready to work and did not leave till dark. They were great communicating with me (text, e-mail, phone) and kept me informed every step of the way. Along with their extreme professionalism comes an amazing painting skill set. After Sam pressure washed my roof, he came up with the idea and took pictures for me of some problem areas that I could show to a roofer. I also had them paint a few rooms inside my house after I saw the beautiful job they were doing with my exterior. I am so happy with the way the house looks and I have Sam and Yana to thank for that. I will be doing business again with them very soon! Mike Barbaro

I would highly recommend Phoenix Electrical & Mechanical Contractors! They installed a whole house generator for my dad. When the gas company flaked, Phoenix Electrical stepped in when they didn’t have to and solved the problem. They are professional, honest, they clean up after themselves, and the quality of work they provide is superior to anything I have seen lately.

I've had the pleasure of working with Greg on many occasions. We most recently renovated my second floor balconies, and even though it was apparently deemed to much work for some contractors, evidenced by their hesitancy to submit a bid or complete lack there of.... ( I hate that!!! ) he took our project from proposal to amazing completion in three days and $200.00 under buget, witch left enough for a small flat screen tv out there...that he made possible by routing the cable for free!! In short we love our new space and are already planning our next protect with him Thank you Greg

I like to work with customers who are looking to purchase a home. Some Home Inspectors will "over look" certain things during the home inspection just to close a real estate deal. My reports are always thorough, accurate and reflect the true condition of the home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
