Just had my first class with Jorge. He is very knowledgeable and definitely knows what he is doing. Working with Blaze during the first session he was already able to understand a few commands. Looking forward to continue working with Jorge and training my puppy!

Todd was extremely professional, helpful and accommodating. I had been using a different dog trainer before hiring him and it was a worlds difference!! He came prepared with informational paperwork, a protocol to follow for Bentley's separation and even CHEESE!!! Bentley can be a fearful dog and often displays what I thought was separation anxiety. After one session with Todd he was able to evaluate Bentley and come to the conclusion that Bentley DOES NOT have severe separation anxiety. I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked away from Bentley and he didn't follow me but was literally eating out of the palm of Todd's hand. Since our visit I've implemented the suggestions Todd made to provide Bentley with a distraction upon my departure. He has improved tremendously and it's only been maybe a month of the new treats and toys?? All and all I am VERY pleased and impressed with Todd's service. I would highly recommend him for your dog training needs!

We had such an amazing experience. Maureen has such a wonderful heart. She is passionate about her love for dogs and and truly cares about the outcome of the training experience. She is very committed to making sure each dog not only meets the basics, but makes sure that you (the owner) is completely satisfied and comfortable with the training your dog received. Maureen was not only patient with Theo, but helped us give him the confidence he needs to be a great dog. We are so happy to have Maureen and Mo'bedience. We could not ask for anything more.

Highly recommend Kim for any type of dog training. We rescued a very fearful GSD that had spend the first 2 years of her life in various pet store cages. I have dealt with many dogs before, but never one this "broken." Kim was really able to bring her around to be a happy, healthy girl!

Dawn has been very accommodating to our family & puppies needs. She is very knowledgeable and has a calm demeanor while training our German Shepard Puppy, which was important to us being he is just a puppy. We plan on our puppy Moose to become a Therapy dog and excited Dawn has a great amount of experiences in this area of training. We did our research and found Dawn to be the most fitting for our puppy "Moose"

We've done a meet and greet with Madi and our two GSDs LOVE her! We are doing an evening this week for Madi to spend some time with the dogs before she house sits with them within the next couple of weeks. Madi was extremely professional and has a great energy about her plus she's just qualified in dog training so we are looking forward to hiring her for that too to help out with our fur-babies. Highly recommend.

My family and I are new to owning a dog. We adopted a dog from the shelter and wanted to make sure we trained her correctly. K9 Connection is honestly the best dog training company I have been lucky to come across. The initial contact, they come to your house, analyze the dog, and how we work with our dog. They showed us how to control, walk, and enjoy our new family member. The price is perfect for one on one training, honestly don't be scared and think you can't afford this. I thought that and the value you get from training even if it is one session is priceless. They are professional and always on time. Highly recommend.

Had lots of patience and walked us through each step. We saw immediate progress after one training session with homework to do on a weekly behavior plan.

On a 5-star rating I'd like to give her a hundred thousand, million billion! This is the best investment I will ever make in anything related to an animal that I have. It will bless our lives every day forward for as long as my dog lives and will bless me with the next dog I have in the next after that. In the life of my dog it will end up being a fraction of a penny a day investment. The scale quality of Vanessa's her training has forever changed my dog's life and my life. It's actually made the difference of being able to keep my beloved pet. I've worked with him daily since I got him at 10 weeks old, he's always been a handful and I've never been effective with my training. This summer things spiraled out of control when he got aggressive with a housemate and a neighbor. I was scared to have hum around children because he would get aggressive with them as well. I was looking into the options of finding a new home for him, which broke my heart but I was trying to do what was best for the dog for the children in the neighborhood and for myself. I thank God we found Vanessa and her family that took my dog in for 2 weeks socialized thim trained him, helped him discover he could trust people to be the alpha and he could relax into just being a dog and a puppy. He is much more happy and relaxed than I have ever seen him. He minds me almost perfectly. He's safe around children men and unexpected visitors to our house now! I did my homework and talked to multiple trainers before choosing Vanessa.. Most of them their rate was double or triple Vanessa's and I didn't always like their approach. The fact that my dog got to live in her home and be fully socialized with her family I think made an enormous difference. This is the highest review I've ever given to any kind of business at any time. I can't overstate how good she is.

I have had the opportunity to observe Clara & Barry while training their newest service dog. Sabrina is a beautiful, intelligent puppy and has learned so much already. Clara & Barry train with love & rewards and Sabrina is eager to learn. She already knows lots of commands, like come, stay, down, shake, sit and roll over and she's also learning to go to the door when she wants out. Clara & Barry make a great team and someone will be so lucky to get one of their service dogs Dee O

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
