Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

We moved into a new house and realized that the cabinet for the fridge wasn't big enough to fit our old fridge. Instead of recommending us to get a new cabinet built, Fernando suggested modifying the existing cabinet. That was less expensive and quicker and we absolutely love the results. Based on our experience, I'm looking forward to working Fernando again on future cabinet projects.

I asked the Cabinet Elves to build a custom jewelry cabinet for me. I wanted it to fit into a certain spot in my closet and I wanted as many drawers as I could get for the space. They gave me sketches of the design and I was excited to see the finished product. Needless to say, I was upset and shocked when I saw the finished product. It was NOTHING like the sketches that were presented to me. Jeff had decided to "match" the cabinet to my bedroom furniture and had added LAYERS of trim to my cabinet. I could have had a couple more drawers! Worst of all....The top has "wings" on it. The square top extends in all four corners with a square piece that I bump into every time I enter my closet. (My bedroom furniture does NOT have "wings"!) They totally ruined my cabinet! I was so disappointed! They offered to take the whole thing apart and redesign it, but it had already gone way over the time-frame and budget they promised and I didn't want to wait anymore. I now own a $2800 cabinet that I dislike tremendously.

This was a fairly small job consisting of building and installing two sets of cabinets (lower & upper) in a small kitchen. The entire job took about 8 hours of installation. (The cabinets were built at their warehouse and then installed at our location.) The finished cabinet work was good. The cabinets were/are sturdy and well constructed. No complaints with regard to wood workmanship. The complaint is this. There were/are a few minor items that needed to be addressed (tweaked) such as tightening up several drawer and cabinet handles that required washers and thereby not installed properly the first time. One cabinet door was hung crooked. There was supposed to be two under cabinet lighting fixtures. Only one was installed on the initial visit. After months of asking when they would come out and make these minor adjustments there was one excuse after another. They did make one attempt to address the concerns, but forgot the washers and installed the 2nd fixture that only partially lit up. These very minor issues are not still not fully resolved (after 2 months). Additionally, I've not heard back from Design Time in over 2 weeks, and have given up on trying to get them back out here. My advice to anyone that hires Design Time would be this. Make sure everything is completed to your complete satisfaction the first time. If it is not, don't pay the second half of the amount due until ALL work (include tweaking) has been completed. This way you'll know they will come back in a timely manner if needed.

On 3/6/16 we hired Jeff Tardy to build a media cabinet for us. His promise was to have the entire unit built and delivered on 4/6/16. What followed was a nightmare. On 4/6/16 date of delivery, he called to say he couldn't come because his painting booth caught on fire and promised to come the following day. On 4/9/16 he said he was unhappy with paint finish and had to repaint. We paid a visit to his shop that very day. No evidence of a fire. Our cabinet was partially finished but not a drop of paint had been applied. He apologized and said the story was too long..but that he would have it ready the next day. On 4/16 Jeff arrived 2 hours late with only 2 of the bottom pieces which were incomplete. The excuses continued for another 3 weeks..stuff fell off the truck, he stayed up all night working on our stuff , paint wet, crashed his car, his men following behind with missing pieces..they never showed. In the end, many things were wrong like three different shades of white paint was used, the center unit was askew, shelves were bowed, molding was joined in 3 places, the top of the unit was left misaligned and unsightly. Doors were hung wrong, crown molding installed poorly. Gaps where there shouldn't be any. Fillers on end couldn't match because of poor measurements. The unit was not level in several places and off by 1/4 to 1/2 inches in several places. The worst was the TV couldn't fit in the designated space. We have photos and texts to support our claim. Jeff did attempt to fix some of the problems.. but obviously he is not a media cabinet maker. All of his promises were just empty words. His actions and deceitfulness were borderline criminal. Jeff was given professional drawings used by the builder for the same type of unit which were installed in several homes in this development. Finally, we do not want anyone to have an experience like ours..please do not use this man to build you anything..he does know how to use a measuring tape.
