Adrian was absolutely a pleasure to work with. I had a lot of questions regarding a landscaping design and the installation of my garden. Adrian responded quickly and was very patient with me. I appreciated that. Adrian came to my home and provided me with an affordable quote and also provided me with some wonderful suggestions. Adrian arrived on time to our service appointment and completed our project quickly and efficiently. I was very pleased with the outcome. Because he did such an amazing job we also hired him for the landscaping services of our business. Thanks again Adrian!!

17 yrs ago, I bought a Japanese Maple and it was the first tree I planted in Ga after moving here from N.Y. This tree was the highlight of my garden. Now we are moving into a bigger home and I wanted to bring the tree with us. After several companies turning me down and putting me off, we found Aaron Martell of Leafy Lawns on Thumbtack and he responded back within an hour. He gave me a quote that was in my price range and we agreed to a day and time. Aaron and his helper Monty showed up and started working on the tree. Monty ended up on his hands and knees trying to gently remove the root ball for hours. He took great care to protect as much of the root ball as possible. The job was harder than we all expected. After several hours, the tree was removed and gently placed in the back of Aaron's truck. They transplanted the tree here at our new home. Now it will be the high light of my new garden. We want to thank Aaron and Monty for all of their hard work. We highly recommend Leafy Lawns and we're Extremely Happy Debbie and Ed B.

Diane helped me plan, and then execute, a flower garden at my condo. She purchased some plants, the soil, and wood child. I purchased some plants also. She and Rusty were able to complete the preparation of the old bed (removal of old plants and lava rock) and the new planting in 4 hours. The process, from first email to final plant placement and woodchip dressing was seamless. Diane was professional and efficient, and Rusty was a competent worker who came up with a creative idea for using a large rock (I had brought with me from CT) as a conduit for water from the gutter. I am very pleased with my garden, impressed with the two-week turn-around, and will call Diane again for future fine-tuning. I recommended her without reservation.

I now have a beautiful patio garden because of the careful, conscientious expertise of Quinton Lewis! He spent considerable time looking over my yard, noting the changes I wanted. He was patient while I tried to find the Mexican beach rocks for the path! And on 6/17, he and his crew spent many hours weeding, digging, enriching the soil, planting, and digging out a stump. The results are totally beautiful! June Neumark

Inherited a beautiful garden. I know nothing about gardens. A beautiful spot was going to weeds. I needed help. Boy! Did I luck up. Within hours of posting my request, I had a contact from Chris. The next day, we were assessing the garden. That day, I knew we had a winner! I could not be more pleased!

Martin first came to our rescue in 1997, when we needed major landscaping for our new swimming pool. The area on one side of the pool needed building up, and to keep it intact and level a wall roughly 4' high was required. Martin did the job right, installing a drainage system behind the timber wall and securing it with over 30 deadmen. He also brought in loads of topsoil as needed and ordered and delivered the sod we selected. As a bonus, he helped us lay the sod. About a decade later we hired Martin to design and build a long garden that extends from the pool up one side of the house and ends at the driveway. At the latter point he constructed a raised garden that curves beautifully around a flagstone plot. He built a stone wall fronting the garden that tapers to the ground, in harmony with the slope of the land. He selected all the plants and flowers, keeping in mind our wish for low maintenance as well as beauty. The gardens and the landscaping generally is something any artist would admire, if not envy. A few years later we asked Martin to build another raised garden in front of our house and to fix the sinking front steps. In addition, we wanted a flagstone sidewalk to replace the builder's concrete pathway. We also wanted the porch to be surfaced with flagstone. Again, Martin came through, rebuilding the porch foundation and laying out a flagstone path that has truly elevated our home's attractiveness. I wish I could think of something he could've done better to make this review seem more credible, but honestly, I can't. His rates are often lower than most, and his work reflects the dedication of a landscape artist. If need to add lasting beauty to your home you should give Martin McMillan serious consideration. I hired Bregenzer's Inc. to create a solution to a serious water run-off/drainage problem in my backyard, and to install a system to correct the problem. Within 2 days of my phone request Roger Bregenzer came to my house, surveyed the situation, and within 2 more days delivered a solution to the problem together with a quote for the work. I accepted the quote and the work was done on time, in a very professional manner and at the exact amount of the quote. The finished product was far more attractive than I expected it to be and it functions very well. I would highly recommend this firm for landscape design and installation work..

Chris and his team tiled the shower and replaced the doors in my master bath. They also did a back splash around the garden tub in the master bath. From the initial meeting to the completion of the job, Chris and his team were amazing. To begin with, Chris provided me with a detailed quote so I knew exactly how much my job was going to cost and could budget accordingly. Chris and his team were always on time and kept me informed about the progress of the job. Chris even emailed me photos of their progress while I was at work. The shower and tub turned out even more beautiful than I had imagined and I couldn't be happier. Since my initial job, I have talked with Chris about additional projects that I would like to do in my home and am fully confident that I will be 100% satisfied with those as I am the first project. Thanks Chris!! I look forward to working with you again.

I employed Sharon Dean of A Touch of Eden to provide landscape design and installation services for my home garden. Sharon provided some great visual ideas for what I could do with my ¾ acre lot that includes a steep slope. Sharon and I went shopping to look at what was available and she proved that she knows her plants. She was actively engaged in overseeing the installation of the project. I was very pleased with Sharon’s creativity and take charge approach to the overall project. I highly recommend A Touch of Eden for landscape design and installation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
