Andrew B. says, "I begrudgingly sought out help on this job but my wife insisted that I get help with this if nothing else. I’m a bigtime DIY, and especially when it comes to painting b/c anyone can slap paint on a wall, right? That is what I used to think. But I was wrong, BIGTIME! I am so beyone pleased with Pigeon Painting that I am compelled to write a review, which I never do. We had them paint our front porch post/railings/trim work, dining room and kitchen walls/trim/cabinets and ceilings. They went above and beyond in their efforts and left me speechless with their finished product. The house is close to 50 years old the Dining Room cabinets are the original ones and they sanded, refinished and painted them to look spotless and brand new. Another thing that really impresses me was their finish on the ceilings. Again, the sheetrock for the ceiling is 50 years old, we had an upstairs bathroom leak causing water damage to the kitchen ceiling that had been patched up previously and the ceilings had been repainted. They looked fine and I didn’t pay it too much mind b/c it’s the ceiling, 50 years old and had to have multiple areas repaired from water damage. They somehow got the ceiling sanded and refinished to where it literally looks like 1 smooth sheet covering the entire room. I actually, stop just to look up at the ceiling when I walk in the kitchen now. It is truly amazing. Now the porch is my baby b/c I built it myself (with some help). Like I said, I’m a DIY, but I’m also typically very cheap. Before PP came to my rescue, I had installed and taken down the post/railings 2 or 3 time: adjust the height, change the ballasters, change ballaster spacing, etc. I’m cheap so I reused all the same wood so most every piece had excess nails or screw/bail holes throughout. I thought that I would have to replace a numerous railing/post/column pieces on the porch because they were very choppy and looked like junk for lack of a better term. I honestly thought that I would have to spend $300-400 just in replacement wood to get the kind of finish that Pigeon Painting was able to give us. They spent at least 2 entire days sanding the porch down to where the wood looked brand new from the lumber yard, and then paint finishing was flawless. I cannot thank or recommend them enough. I entered the project not wanting to hire anyone in the first place, to having genuine excitement about PP coming back to work their magic on our upstairs now!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best deck contractor in Atlanta?

Locate the best deck contractor in Atlanta by utilizing Thumbtack’s directory of local professionals.

Begin by comparing ratings, Top Pro status, and customer reviews — particularly customer reviews with photos of the contractor’s previous work. These give you the ability to gauge their craftsmanship.

In Georgia, deck contractors receive licenses through the State Construction Industry Licensing Board — anyone you work with should be able to present their license.

Once you’ve selected a few professionals, contact them for quotes and estimates. Choose a contractor with a favorable reputation and pricing.

How much is a porch?

It costs about $5,000-$10,000 to build a small, basic porch, according to HGTV. Prefabricated porches typically cost around $10,000-$30,000. Larger, custom-made porches can cost as much as $50,000.

To find out exactly how much your porch will cost, request a cost estimate from a porch builder near you.

Does adding a porch increase home value?

A porch may increase your home’s value and boost its curb appeal. However, you’ll need to do your research to understand what types of home upgrades can attract potential buyers.

Does a porch need foundations?

Yes, your porch should have a foundation that adheres to your local building codes. You can often find this information online. You can also consult your porch builder and ask for their help when navigating building codes.

What is a sleeping porch?

A sleeping porch is a screened balcony or deck that contains sleep furnishings and cool breezes. If you live in a region that experiences warm weather at night, these porches can provide a way to escape the heat and get a good night’s sleep.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).
