Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What flowers or plants grow well in Atlanta?

If you want to optimize your landscaping for Atlanta’s hot, humid climate, you’ll need to choose the right flowers and plants. One great choice for Atlanta is the Arkansas Bluestar, a perennial that blooms in the autumn with lovely colors. Butterfly weed is also lovely, with an orange color that attracts butterflies. And a perennial plumbago is an excellent groundcover plant that produces blue flowers.

How do I find a gardener?

To find a good gardener near you, compare top-rated pros online. Read their profiles to find out what their specialities and list of services are. For example, do they offer:

  • Mulching
  • Lawn maintenance
  • Trees and shrub removal
  • Trees, shrub and flower planting
  • Weed removal
  • Etc.

Also, read their customer reviews and inspect photos that showcase the gardeners’ work. And contact several gardeners near you to compare prices and decide who’s the best fit.

How often should a gardener come?

How often your gardener should come depends on what you’re looking for and your budget. Typically, homeowners prefer a gardener to come once per week, several times a month or once per month. This may include services like tidying up the garden or trimming and tidying hedges. Some people hire these tasks out once per year. For more regular services like mowing the lawn, weeding and trimming, you could hire someone to come every week or every other week. If you do some of the work yourself, you can have them come out less frequently.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

Working with Corey from Yah Rootz was the the best way to start our family’s first garden. Exceeded my expectations. He is certainly professional and delivers what he promises; but what’s more was that he is a caring family man and shared love, wisdom, and education with our kids and our family. I recommend working with Corey without any reservations. I wish him and his family the best.

I can’t say enough great things about Ms. T! It’s one thing to hire a professional to do a job but it’s another when the professional’s energy is magnetic that the job became a pleasure and a learning experience for me. Ms. T’s inner light shined so bright it put me in such a great mood. I learned so much about gardening and it’s benefit to humankind which was something I always took for granted. In the same token she taught me we all can take better care of our planet by doing little things like creating our own little garden/ecosystem. My experience with Ms. T has definitely given me a renewed appreciation of God’s creation and the magic it produces by showing it a little TLC! I highly recommend this lady. You simply can’t go wrong! Thank you for your time, education and wise words! Til next time!!

I hired Marco Bolanos to do some landscaping work at my daughter's home in Glenwood Park. The reason I hired him was because his bid for the job was approximately one-third the amount of the bid I got from another landscaper and because he seemed very knowledgeable and honest. Also because he could do the job as soon as we wanted it done. My initial impression of him proved correct: he is honest, ethical, and does excellent work, even though he charges much less than other professional landscapers Also, whereas the other landscaper who gave us a bid wanted us to pay him 50% up front, Marco did not want to be paid until the job was completed and we were satisfied with it. He showed up on time on the day he indicated he'd be there, and he and his crew worked hard and finished up the job in one and a half days. What they did was the following: clean up an old garden bed bordering the front of the house and plant new shrubs in it; clean up the backyard, which was filled with overgrown weeds, unwanted shrubs, a little fishpond surrounded by brickwork (my daughter wanted this taken out because she wants her baby to be able to play in the backyard when he becomes a toddler and a pond would be dangerous), transplant some viable shrubs to better locations in the backyard, and seed and mulch the whole yard. My daughter was very pleased with his work. When I went down to Atlanta (I live in Athens) a couple of days later to see the results, I too was very pleased except for one thing that Marco apparently hadn't understood that we wanted him to do, which was to transplant some liriope plants from the backyard to the front border garden, to fill in some gaps in the liriope border along that garden. I texted Marco about this, and even though he had already been paid, he came back the next day to take care of this. Many landscapers would not have done this once they'd been paid for a job. So, all in all, we were very pleased with Marco's work and my daughter and her husband plan to hire him again in the spring to re-sod their front yard. They plan to recommend him to any friends who need landscaping work done in the future.
