I started looking for a sitter for my two small breed puppies because I was going out of town for Thanksgiving. I figured sitters would be booked early for the holiday so I started looking early October. Schantel reached out to me and her rates were the best I've seen so I automatically set up an appointment for a meet and greet. She came to my house and got a feel for the two of them. She told me she's a vet tech and I was sold! We decided that I would drop off my fur babies although she did offer to pick them up. As it got closer to Thanksgiving, Schantel would text me to check up on Mink and Mace. On Thanksgiving day I went to her house, which was easy to find. I packed toys, food, harnesses, and their crate. When I got there it turns out that she had already set up a crate for them. It was nice that she was so prepared and next time I know I won't have to lug that heavy crate around. During their stay she sent pictures and videos everyday which I really appreciated. I expressed to her that I would like to socialize them so she sent me videos to show me how well they were getting along with the other dogs and assured me that it was always supervised. When I came to pick them up, Mace, who's only 4 pounds, greeted me at the door with the large dogs that Schantel was watching. Clearly he thinks he's big too but I was happy to see him getting along so well with the other dogs, big and small. Since I'm still working on house training she gave me an update and the schedule that she used so that I would be able to go home and do the same. I was definitely happy with my experience and will be using Schantel anytime I need a sitter.

The animals were calm and happy when I got home, (aside from my little beagle's squeals of delight to see me after my trip), there were no messes whatsoever, and I totally recommend Zen Dog to anybody who needs a walker/sitter, be it short or long term. 100% satisfied.

I’ve never corresponded with someone as friendly, responsive, and positive as Mark Shaver, the owner of Buckhead Paws. He quickly quoted me a fair price for pet sitting our cats within moments of me placing a project on Thumbtack, and quickly answered all my questions in a way that made it enjoyable to communicate with him. He walked me through the process of scheduling the pet sitting appointment and was patient with my questions. We set up a meeting and Mark showed up with our actual pet sitter to be, Kim. It was nice having the owner of a company take the time to come over to meet our kitties also. Both were really nice, and asked thoughtful questions as we showed them where everything was. It made us feel we were in good hands. While we were away Kim gave us daily photos and updates of our kitties, many of them funny, which were very much appreciated. They were often the bright spot of our day. Kim picked up packages as needed and even cleared our deck for window washers. We knew he was only a text away if we needed anything. But the true test was seeing how the kitties were when we returned. They were calm and cheerful, the house clean, even the trash emptied. We are really pleased with this service and will definitely use Buckhead Paws again.

Sarah is wonderful! I was nervous to find a pet sitter because I was always lucky enough to have family in town to take care of my cat Kate. But that wasn't the case anymore and luckily I found Sarah! She was exactly on time for our first meeting to get to know her. I went over everything and she took notes and asked questions. After each visit she let me know how Kate was doing and sent me some pictures. She went out of her way when I needed her and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a pet sitter. I have just relocated to a new state and will miss having Sarah to watch my sweet Kate!

My wife and I recently moved into a new home in a new city. We love to travel and are always looking for someone to look after our baby Jasper. Lori was referred to us by friends and was a home run. She is professional, courteous and trustworthy. Lori kept us informed via text and pictures while we were away. Couldn’t have asked for a better sitter. She is also very affordable.

Gail was thoughtful in her interactions with me and listening to what my needs/wants were in a cat sitter as we have two older cats with one needing insulin injections twice a day. Gail texted me while we were away letting me know all was well which made the trip more relaxing. Gail spent the nights which worked out nicely. My husband and I will hire Gail again! Linda was wonderful. She came to the house to meet my fur- babies ahead of time and to get instructions, they loved her onsite. She was so comfortable with them and they with her. While we were away she texted us after each visit to let us know how they were doing (the first with pictures) . My Baby of the two looked like he was laughing in them, i knew i had made the right decision. When we came home they were perfect. This was our first time using a pet-sitter and I was thrilled with Linda. I will never look for another.

I have one cat that is extremely timid and this is the first pet sitter I’ve had where he would actually come out and play when they were there. I would highly recommend odds & Ends Petsitters. We looked forward to each day’s report and pictures

Safe at Home Pet Sitting is the only one I would trust with my crew--4 Collies & 1 Border Collie. They have been lovingly caring for my guys for 5 years now--no easy task! I sometimes come home thinking that my Border Collie is disappointed that his pet sitter won't be coming to see him for a while! Safe at Home has seen the pups through illnesses, heat cycles, fights between the boys, crazy feeding regimens, bad weather--and I always trust that they are in the best of care. In addition to caring for the pups, my home is well taken care of too, with my mail and packages in, lights rotated so that the house appears occupied, trash in and out, plants watered, etc. Safe at Home is a wonderful, caring service!

Kat is an amazing cat sitter. She spent 3 weeks with my two bengal cats & bengal cats are a lot of work. She sent me updates and pictures during my travels abroad. My two bengal boys were super happy and loving when I returned. Kat did a great job with directions for training my boys. They didn't pick up any bad habits while I was gone! Thanks Kat so much for taking great care of my boys! Her service is outstanding!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

      • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
      • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
        • 45-minute visit: $28.
        • 60-minute visit: $32.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
        • 12 hours: $100.
        • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32.
