Robert Z. says, "Meagan is a talented singer and voice teacher who helped me to accomplish a very special and challenging singing goal. At almost 69 years of age with no singing experience and having never spoken Italian, let alone sing in it, I looked to Meagan to prepare me to sing Era Gia Tutto Previsto. I wanted to sing this difficult song in a respectful way while touring with my wife in Tuscany on an exclusive Bocelli Backstage Tour and Recording Experience at PPG Production Studios - the same studio and microphone used by the Maestro himself when recording many of his most famous masterpieces. From the very beginning, Meagan made me feel comfortable and embraced my goal. She established a plan over the months we had before our trip to best prepare me. Her positive and supportive approach was extremely helpful as I certainly had a steep learning curve. Her lesson follow-up and practice plans along the way was instrumental. Because of Meagan I achieved my goal and have a recording that I am very proud of and memories for a life time. For this I will be forever grateful to have had the pleasure and experience with Meagan as my voice teacher and mentor. Robert Z. Erie, Pennsylvania"See more

Edith A. says, "Hi, my name is Edith and I am from Mexico. I have two degrees. I am a Systems Engineer (graduated from a University in Mexico) and a Teacher with an endorsement in Spanish (recently graduated from a University in the United States). However, no matter how much I have studied, I still struggle when speaking English and I have a very noticeable accent. That is why I was looking for precise lessons that would help me target my concerns. Last week I had my orientation session with Professor Alex. He started the session asking questions about myself like what was my native language, what were my main concerns when speaking English, what do I want to accomplish in this course, to name a few. Prof. Alex is very professional and nice, he listens to you and your concerns and he identifies your flaws from the moment you start talking. He gives you the rationale behind those mistakes you constantly make. Prof. Alex is very honest, he will tell you in a very professional way when you are not pronouncing correctly certain sounds, he won’t lie to you since he is committed to your learning. He uses this amazing technology that helps you visualize the movements in your mouth, tongue, and lips. Once you visualize the movements of your mouth, tongue, and lips that image stays in your brain and the next time you make that sound you will remember that image and you will be able to carry out that sound. By the end of my orientation session, I was one hundred percent sure that I wanted to start my English lessons with Prof. Alex. I highly recommend him if you want to improve your English."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

Contact vocal instructors near you to get a sense of how much singing lessons cost in your area.

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

It depends on what you’re hoping to accomplish with your singing lessons. Consult a highly rated vocal instructor to determine how many lessons you should take — and how often you should take them.
