Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

The electrician didn't show up as scheduled. Therefore, I didn't form a favorable impression of the company.

Residential troubleshooting and electrical - Our house has had a myriad of electrical problems since we bought it, but mostly small inconveniences. However, when half the power in the house went out, we needed to bite the bullet and hire an electrician. We decided on Mr. Houston, and what a great choice that was. He was punctual, professional, and knowledgeable. He was able to diagnose every issue that we had been facing. Along the way he educated us on what the issues were and how he was going to fix them and continually assured us he would not leave until they had been resolved. True to his word, he restored power to part of the house that was lacking and went on to fix other various wiring and power issues that the previous owner had left. He cleaned before he left, was friendly and considerate throughout, and really does have a lot of experience in the field. If you're looking on Thumbtack to hire an electrician in the CSRA, look no further.

came out to look at my electrical problem didn't even check anything just looked with his eyes quoted me $200.00. I told him i would call or text in a couple days after i called insurance company. I texted him back that day no response texted him 2 more times then when he finally got back to be he said he was gonna be out of town for the weekend. Then he texted me back and said he quoted me the wrong price it was gonna be $1500.00 and he would take the $200.00 upfront and then wait for the rest from my insurance company. Sounded to me like he was gonna take our $200.00 and run with it. We would not hire him if he was the last electrician on earth. Very unprofessional all the way around.

I am very disappointed in this company. I messaged back and forth with Jamie for a few days and, after rescheduling the initial appointment because of a personal matter on his end, he was a no-show for the date/time we moved the appointment to. He messaged me an hour before the 5pm appointment and said he would be there an hour late. I said that would be fine. Keep in mind, we no longer live in this home as it's under contract for sale so we had to drive all the way out to it to meet him. We also had to have this done immediately before the final walk-through. We waited for about 45 minutes and he never showed. We called 4-5 times as we were waiting, we texted and we messaged him through here and we never received a response. We never even received any kind of apology any day following the no-show. We then found Mr. Electric the next day, called and scheduled with them. They showed up early, did the job quickly and we had zero issues at all with them. If you're looking for an electrician, I recommend Mr. Electric. I will never try to use Elite again.
