Adam came over and provided a quote the first business day after I called. I initially wanted a quote on re-casing a window, but he ended up repairing the Window, a disconnected HVAC Duct, some loose insulation, and he installed a drip leg on our Hot Water Heater. His quote was very reasonable and he ensured the process was transparent the entire way. His crew did excellent work, they left the house as clean as they found it, and Adam was very polite and courteous throughout. I would recommend him for future repairs on just about anything.

I had several tasks to complete around the house. Some were quick and simple, others were more challenging (fixing a couple of doors and windows, putting up gutters, fixing the threshold to a door that was leaking into the house whenever it rained, putting up two TV wall-mounts, fixing locks on doors, etc). He did it all and everything was done with great craftsmanship. He has an automatic 1 year warranty on all of his work too, so that takes away some stress. Out of three quotes I got for this work, his was the most reasonable. Not only did he do the work perfectly, but he saved me a lot of money. Thank you Wade!!!

I hired Todd Lamb to do numerous home repair and improvement jobs to get my home ready to be on the market. He did an excellent job painting. He repaired my wrap around porch, my cracked shower stall, replaced my shutters, etc. He replaced windows and door sidelights. And the list went on and on. My home sold in 3 months and he did the needed repairs required by the home inspector. Todd is dependable, trustworthy, and does an superb job. I would highly recommend him.

Vincent did a great job replacing my window sill and repairing baseboards. I had to leave him at the house to go back to work, and he finished the job, left the place clean, and left the keys where I asked. Would recommend him for your needs.

We needed an emergency window repair and John was able to perform the job immediately. He was fast and very knowledgeable in everything window related. He even went to an extent of searching an entire city and calling around to acquire a required part for an older window that we have that doesn't even have a brand sticker any longer. Definitely a great choice of a handyman!

Chris replaced eaves and windiw sills that had deteriorated and rebuilt a broken window structure. He also was able to rebuild a sink base and repair the plumbing to the sink. He was pleasant and showed up on time exactly when he said he would every day. He went the extra mile to repair a few small items that he noticed were not as they should be. Cleanup of debris was spot on.

Doug replaced the cedar siding on the front of our home top and bottom stories. He also replaced weather stripping on a window that was leaking. The work was done on time and is holding back the storms that pound against it.

Chris has done multiple jobs for our fixer upper house we just purchased. Some have been minor (replacing door casings and building a window seat for us) and others have been large (adding new railing to our wrap around front porch and upgrading our wooden columns). He has done an outstanding job with every project. He always goes above and beyond with quality! We will hire him again and again for any needs we have.

Tim got in touch with me very quickly, inspected the damage, quoted me a price and had the work done within 3 business days. His prices were reasonable and his work was well done. I will definitely be using him again! Thanks Tim!

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

          • Trim repair:
            • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
            • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
          • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
          • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
            • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
            • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
              • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
