Describe the job What did Mike Doble help you with? Mike Doble with AppNet has been a huge asset to getting our real estate business out in the public eye. Mike is always there when you need him and willing to make even my most difficult of requests work. We love our new website and it would not have been possible without his expertise and hard work! His services were worth every penny! Where was the job? Our real estate company is located in Denver, NC. and the greater Lake Norman area. How long did it take? The process took 3 months. Reason being, I was personally swamped with being the top selling agent in NC & SC, setting company records in sales. If I personally, would have had a quicker reply to their proofs we could have shortened the time by 4 weeks. Say what went well What impressed you about the service? I was super impressed with Mike’s honest and accurate assessment of our real estate company’s website needs from our very first conversation. I must confess, I was sticker shocked at the cost of our project. However, he was able to stay within our budget. No hidden cost! That is huge! His services were were worth every penny! Even more impressive was Mike’s ability to stay on schedule during a horrific life storm. Unfortunately, Mike and one of his staff members experienced two very serious family tragedies during the time slot of building our website. I was blown away at how they were able to stay on schedule! I stand in admiration with his standard of excellence. Did Mike Doble go above and beyond? I purposefully had shopped 12 different web designers in a 12 month period. The fact that Mike interacted with me as an educator was what set him apart from his competition. If I was going to spend the money, I wanted the best! Mike was excellent at sitting down with me via a web chat and strategizing about our web design project down to the tiniest details. He set the bar high with his client care. His entire staff followed suit. Their practices are quite fantastic. Was Mike Doble on time? Mike had specific timelines for all the bits and pieces of the web design. I was really impressed! How was the quality of the work? Each stage of the design process was approached with extreme care and attention to detail. Mike and the AppNet team over delivered in the quality of product and service that I received! Point out what could have been better What would have improved your experience? What would have improved my experience during the process of building my website would have been if I were educated with the lingo of the technology world. Being website design and internet presence is all Greek to me, I needed them to translate for me in lay terms. Continuously. Which they did very professionally! What went wrong, if anything? I am an Apple computer user. I only know mac products. There was a hiccup with my browser. They could not mirror the problem, because they did not have a mac computer in the office. However, through screen shots back and forth they were able to finally correct the issue. How could Mike Doble do better in the future? Being a website is a living, breathing, eating machine, (Mike’s words) my only suggestion would be for him to implement a follow up plan with his past clients, to see if there were any other services that his company, AppNet, could implement for their company. For example, adding more landing pages and brain storming how we could beef up our online presence. I guess I was looking for an ongoing marketing relationship. Like, lets talk about phase two. Phase three. Phase four. I am in need of his wise counsel to advise me on how cyber space is responding to my new website. Kind of like our financial advisor meets with us to tell us how our investments are doing. Let’s add this. Let’s stop that. As of now, I am still an online bill board. A great looking bill board. BUT no leads. I am fully confident that AppNet can take us to the next level. Secondly, Being the digital/internet world is quickly becoming post PC, I think Mike and each of his design team needs to learn as much about Apple computer products as possible. Subscribing to Lynda.com may be good resource. AppNet may want to consider their next hire to be Mac savvy. I suggest AppNet update their systems by adding a Mac Lab that consist of an Apple desktop, MacBook Pro laptop, iPad and an iPhone for the purpose of being able to stay ahead of their completion! In closing, as a web developer, Mike Doble was very professional, someone who was easy to work with, he stayed in our budget, and was able to meet our website needs. On a scale of 1-10, as a professional Mike Doble is a 12. At Cloninger Properties, we say Mike Doble and Appnet are the best thing that ever happened to us!

About

For The Art Designs was founded by me, Christian Janson, as an outlet for my creative passion and over 10 years of career in marketing. As a creative director, I have honed my ability to partner with businesses to build their brands and to develop deeper connections with their target consumers. In addition to my visual and graphic design skills, I have deep experience in entertainment and event marketing. Much of this comes from my years working with Steve Harvey as he grew from a regional radio/TV personality to become the national superstar that he is today. In my role, I had the opportunity to work directly with the brand groups from some of America's top consumer products companies to develop together targeted advertising, promotions and events. These clients included Ford, Coca-Cola, State Farm, General Mills and The Home Depot to name a few. Delivering results for my corporate partners was my job. Today, the only difference is that I am now driving those results for my small business partners. My clients benefit from my expertise, as well as that of the marketing communications professionals that round out my team. My wife and I are blessed with three amazing children. My family is a source of daily inspiration. Giving back to others is important to me, which is why I spend time each week volunteering in the community. Music is another passion of mine. Born into a musical family, I enjoy writing and performing regularly. Some of my original music has been used on national cable television shows. Whether it's used for business or pleasure, music is simply another tool for creative expression. I believe in the power of personal connections as much as I believe in the power of small businesses. Take a look at my portfolio and what I have to offer. Then, I hope you will contact For The Art Designs, so that I can partner with you to shape your brand and build your business.

About

I use image, typeface and space to create context and emotional connections. My focus is on contrast and reduction in all aspects of my design, no unnecessary decorations, as this can make the design appear forced. The theory behind my style and aesthetic design is to utilize as little as possible in an effort to communicate as concisely and quickly possible with whom the client is trying to reach. I maintain a clear set of boundaries in my style so that I am focused in what the client wants to produce; this way of working avoids distractions and decorations. My greatest challenge in design is focused around asking myself what kind of boundaries I should use and why. Boundaries not only determine results, but also your identity. One has to be comfortable in the group that they fit in, as this is the only way to express themselves genuinely through image. Being a part of the group allows you to emotionally connect and empathize with your audience. Most of the time, when people don't get triggered by reduced design it's because of the lack of imagination, or the design is really not addressing their imagination at all (in which case you could say that it is a bad design). I find that people who have a clear sense of imagination best appreciate my work. Overloaded and mass-produced designs can be both boring and distracting, while reduced and minimal design has the ability to cut to the chase and give it a decided commercial edge. My aesthetic and design theory is defined as being, "not when there is nothing more to add, but when there's nothing left to take away". - Antonio F. Lewis

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

  • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
  • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
  • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

What do you look for in a web design company?

The web design company you choose must be able to interpret your company’s mission and identity and turn it into an appealing website that connects with potential customers. They must help you reach your target audience and meet your business goals. A web design agency should have on staff both talented web designers, with fresh ideas and extensive technical and creative skills, and a marketing team that knows how to drive traffic to your site, encourage visitor engagement, and convert visitors into customers. Web designers should be able to build in search optimization and integrate your site with a content management system and e-commerce tools. Look, too, for a website design company that understands responsive design and can optimize your website for mobile devices and desktop browsers. The right web design company understand current design and website trends, has experience building sites in a variety of industries (not just yours), and has an expansive portfolio of live websites. Finally, don’t simply hire the cheapest bidder — in web design, as in all things, you get what you pay for.

How do you hire a web designer?

You’ve determined that the best way to create a professional, modern, mobile-friendly new website is to hire a professional web designer to build it. To hire the best person for the job — and to get the web design that best fits your company’s identity — it’s important to ask a few key questions:

  • What’s the scope of the work? Will the website be basic with just a few pages about your company, its services, and contact information? Or will it also have an e-commerce section for online shopping, a blog, or content for visitors to download? Before you hire a web designer, make sure you have a thorough, specific list of the components you must have the designer include in the web design.
  • What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
  • What’s the web designer’s start-to-finish process? What will the final deliverable be? Before you hire someone, make sure their availability works with your timeline and that their process meets your expectations. Most important is finding a web designer who will work collaboratively with you to create a successful online presence.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
