I recently had Kerry and his crew complete a project to repaint the exterior of my house. I had been a little apprehensive with dealing with many of the different contractors around the area but once meeting Kerry and going through our initial walkthrough I was a lot more comfortable. His crew (Bryson and Valentine) that worked on my home were great and did everything to ensure everything I wanted was accomplished and I was satisfied. I along with the rest of my family are extremely happy with the finished product and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a contractor to complete an upcoming project. Thanks again guys. Todd with Residential did an awesome job as my general contractor on my major remodel. He was priced competitively & was much more professional than anyone I interviewed. Everyone that entered my home to work was very respectful & professional. They even did a little extra work found after the fact for cost. I wish I could give these guys 10 stars!! Thanks for my dream home Todd & Residential!

I can’t say how impressed my husband and I are with Phil. His responsiveness and professionalism is unmatched. He was available one day after we called to address our last minute plumbing needs and he did a great job. Not only did he handle plumbing he was also able to handle our electrical needs as well. He’s our official plumber/general contractor going forward. Thank you Phil!

General Contracting - I had several projects to be done as we were getting to put my home of 8 years on the market (kitchen leak, kitchen bay box, shutters, paint, deck). After reading all the reviews, I decided to contact Michael to get a quote. Due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn’t originally meet him on Friday or Saturday, so he took it upon himself to come on a Sunday (which is pretty unheard of since most contractors usually don’t work on Sundays) to assess the job and do his pre-inspection. The quote was more than reasonable for the amount of work I demanded and Michael was hired… All jobs were done in a timely manner; it took approximately 2 weeks due to the weather and schedule conflicts. He kept me informed of what was being done each day and sent pictures of any findings needing attention. I would call Michael and TNT Building and Remodeling LLC if I ever need any work done on my future home and would recommend them to anyone.

Excellent service, work, punctuality, responsiveness, and anything else you would expect from good contractors! I have been pleasantly surprised by the way Leo handled himself, and Rigo, who helped him. I have had many other contractors that did not do so well. No complaints- only compliments for these guys! Scope of work: tile, trim, paint, toilets, and even light drywall repair. Give them a call!

I was so impressed with the two-man crew who came to do the work at my house. They were thorough, careful, and checked in with me throughout the job to make sure I was satisfied. Even when I decided that I needed one more coat of paint to cover my formerly very dark cabinets, they willingly complied. They were able to achieve a ceiling repair that most other contractors had said would be much more difficult. They handled it like a breeze. I like the little touches, like going out to their truck on a smoke break, rather than smoking anywhere near the house. I will definitely use this company again !!

Jose' and Ali are finishing up several projects at my house. The big one was a renovation to my patio where I wanted to remove 2 of the support pillars, add a LVL beam and change the existing beams to stacked stone. It was a big project, but the job they did is outstanding and they did it in record time. They also replaced 2 doors that were rotting out. I've been looking for a contractor like this since I moved into my current house. They have earned a customer for life. Their prices are very reasonable, they work very hard to make sure it's right, and they do fantastic work. They'll be back for the other future projects I can dream up, not to mention the repairs that any house needs from time to time.

After being totally screwed by another contractor, we turned to Tom to fix the problems the other contractor left behind. Tom was reliable, punctual, and respectful. He was extremely knowledgeable about kitchen backsplashes and was all about QUALITY work. We would absolutely hire Tom Tile for all our home improvement needs and will be recommending him to friends.

I have to say Atlanta Local Handyman service is truly a blessing. My technician Mariam Reyes is truly angel and extreme hard worker. After firing one contractor, who clearly had no clue what he was doing and contacting 5 other handyman services, this experience was truly pleasing.I have other projects that need to done and yes I will definitely be calling Atlanta Local Handyman again.

I called Eric initially to change a chandelier in my dining room which he did for a great price and came out great. I inquired about recessed lighting in my family room and his price was literally almost half of what another contractor quoted me. Eric came back and installed 6 recessed lights with LED trims and even installed a dimmer for me for no extra charge. He is very clean and even though he had to cut holes in the wall to run wiring when he finished there wasn't dust all over the place and the wall looked the same as before. I will definetly be bringing Eric back for some more household projects in the future starting with updating my kitchen backsplash.

Tony showed up on time. He did not have a review so I was little hesitant. But Tony did an excellent job and was very reasonably priced and after talking to him he just started so if you want your job done right with professionalism and very reasonably priced now is the time to hire Tony before his prices start going up he is a very good Carpenter I will be hiring him again. I have had many contractors work in my home and have been very disappointed but I am very happy with the choice that I made in hiring Tony to complete my job thank you Tony!

Brent was great to work with! He was prompt with his on-line response, he was on time to evaluate the project, is very knowledgeable about the siding/trim replacement, and gave me a verbal quote before he left. After hiring him for the project, he and his crew arrived on-time every morning, and typically worked into the evenings to complete the job on schedule. He is a hands-on owner, with attention to detail, and works side by side with his crew. You can count on him to be on-site, and personally manage the quality of the work. I’ve hired several contractors throughout the years, and right now, I have a hard time thinking of any that were better to work with than Brent. Definitely two 👍 👍!

I always like to make sure contractors are efficient with smaller jobs before hiring them for larger ones... Armstrong Lighting/ALS proved to me that I can trust them with larger projects in the future. The lighting professional was fast, efficient, thorough and made sure I was satisfied before leaving. Although he finished the job quickly, I didn't feel like he rushed though it. He also made sure the jobsite was clean upon leaving. I will definitely be referring Armstrong Lighting to all of my friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
