Heritage Interiors is totally AWESOME. We have worked with Sara and her business on 2 huge projects. In 2013 ADA Medical Supply renovated our retail space due to damage water and smoke damage. We thought what a great opportunity to redesign our space. Sara coached us through the process, and at times we were doubtful. After the design with colors and furniture selection came together our customers loved the changes. Then in 2014 we added a second location. Without a doubt we called Heritage Interiors. Our retail space turned out fantastic and our customer enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Sara, took precious time to learn about our needs and the needs of our customers. She has a special talent and we are honored to have her work with us. I would highly recommend Heritage Interiors for all your needs. Thank you Sara and Heritage Interiors!

Patt is a talented and highly creative designer. She has fabulous taste and has the most uncanny knack for finding and creating cool stuff! I always loved spending time in her office and seeing the treasures she'd accumulated over the years: sculptures, found art, sock-monkey assemblages, all in a beautifully composed space. I was blown away watching her create dozens of unique holiday cards for her friends: such concern for detail! Her graphic design work integrates her funky and uniquely creative sensibility. Patt is 100% professional, with a fun and original flair.

I am always happy to refer Kevyn Connelly!! I love having her in my home. She is a very talented artist!! She painted my foyer bath with a faux finish and a beautiful bird motif that she did freehand. She's done my entire dining room, and basement bathroom walls. She's refinished furniture and accessories for me including a french mirror. I currently have a list of projects that I am scheduling her to come back and do. She is always very timely. She left my home like she was never there—just more beautiful! I love her! She's become a friend. I can leave her alone in my home with no worries! She made sure I was completely satisfied before payment. You can’t go wrong with hiring Kevyn!

We had flooding in our finished basement and everything had to be re-done. We hired Maria Clara over thumbtack and this was the best decision in our entire reno journey. Maria went above and beyond - she not only helped us out with magnificent design but also helped out with finding the right resources at the right price while also managing the project which was beyond our expectations. She beams passion about what she does and we highly recommend her for any sort of design work.

When I moved into my new home I knew I wanted only the best decorator my money could buy. Kate Varn was that decorator. Kate decorated my whole house and it is absolutely beautiful. After meeting with Kate she understood my wants, and needs. I wanted an updated and timeless design. Kate Varn and Posh Perspectives accomplished just that. Everyone that comes in my home is amazed. It has the look and feel of a designer home while being homey and comfortable. The entire house flows and I am extremely happy with the job she did. Her prices were also a perfect fit for my budget! If you read this review Kate - thank you for a beautifully decorated home and all the compliments I receive. I couldn't be happier!

This is the 1st time working with Studio B and Adam Maloney. Adam was great to work with. I renovated a space between my kitchen & great room and added a wet bar. While I had a basic design, Adam was able to help me tie up the loose ends & bring the space alive. And his crew did a great job. They were on time every day and were very thoughtful about leaving our home as clean as they found it every day. The job was completed on time & on budget. I am very pleased with the outcome. As a matter of fact the more I look at the space the happier I am. It exceeded me expectations. I highly recommend Adam & Studio B. Thank you Adam. Well done.

Susan did an outstanding job staging my northeast Atlanta home at an incredibly affordable price. Her service was expedient, with the entire process of staging my kitchen, dining area, living area, master bedroom and bath, a second bath, and front and back porches being completed within the course of about 3-4 days. Her taste and eye for detail are just impeccable, and she was such a delight to work with. I believe staging my home is the key to getting it sold quickly!

Working with Apt. 5 Interiors was such an amazing experience. This was my first time hiring an interior designer and I did not know what to expect! Alexia was so professional and prompt. She was very honest and open about my budget, any limitations and really brought my vision to life. She updated me every step of the way and by allowing her to really do her "design thing" everything worked out way better than it would have if I hadn't let her have the reins. This was an awesome process and great learning experience. It was worth it so I not only recommend Apt. 5 Interiors but will be returning for another room in the near future.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
