They catered my reception for 80 people. Vincent was one of the two caterers whose first reply responded to my request for a vegan menu with creative suggestions and ample selections. He was promptly responsive at all times during the planning stage. They were better than on time, they arrived a bit early. Travis set everything up, served, and interacted well with the guests. The food was attractively presented, had great visual appeal and best of all tasted great. His cleanup afterward was impeccable. I highly recommend GHI.

Nikki is an excellent chef - food was delicious. She was on time and was very personable! The young men she brought with her were so nice! I had asked for her to prepare extra homemade croutons for me to have the next day and though she said of course I suspect in the haste to leave she forgot them. ( By the way they were great!) The only comment I would make in using a chef versus my regular caterers is that Nikki and her team planned to leave while we were eating dessert. In doing so I would have been left to clean all those dishes ( 10 seated guests) and wine glasses myself. She said that was the way she always did things. None of my caterers have ever done that -- that is part of what you are paying for ($700+) to enjoy your evening and have no work to do ! Just being hostess is enough getting the house and flowers and table set! Nikki knew we had 50 people arriving post dinner for an after party and needed the dinner dishes all pulled and cleaned - was very disappointed that we had to discuss that at the last minute! I had hired a separate bartender for the glasses to be taken care at the post party. I expected her to not do any of those dishes. I did ask her to place trays of desserts I had prepared on the "cleaned off" dining table when they finished. ( I paid them a handsome tip for doing this) Also - I have never had a caterer use the dishwasher for my dishes - I have always found them hand washed and stacked in kitchen. Nikki's team loaded my dishwashers (2) with the hand painted china and sterling flatware. I should have explained that is not done - my mistake, I just haven't had to before. She is an EXCELLENT CHEF! Services are not as "easy" on the host and her familiarity with things like the china and silver should be discussed before hand. Be very specific about every detail on how you see the evening going - write it up so you both know. We had Sea Bass and It Was Amazing!

The Bountiful Basket was our caterer for our wedding on July 10. There is not enough that could be said about what Mike and his team did for us. They were way more than caterers. Mike handled everything: tables, tents, chairs, dinnerware, glassware for both our wedding and our rehearsal dinner. His staff was so very professional and on the ball. And the food....WOW. It was incredible evidenced by the fact that there was very little left. His mac and cheese is unique and fantastic. The shrimp and grits were fabulous and he makes fried chicken just like your grandmother. Please seriously consider The Bountiful Basket for any catering event. You will not be sorry. Thanks Mike and crew you made our day perfect.

The faculty and staff at Huie Elementary School enjoyed having C-Bo's BBQ serve lunch at their school. The owner and his wife were very professional; arriving on time, prepared, and ready to serve! They offered good food, and they were very clean. I would recommend them at any school or work place for a great lunch experience!

I would like to give a thumbs up to Pas De Deux Catering, I used this catering service for my wedding reception, and was very impressed. The food and the services were great and very reasonable. Marcus, was able to help me at the last minute seeing that I wasn't pleased with my last caterer. Antionette and her staff did a very good job in catering a graduation party for a total of 150 people. The food presentation was very nice, food itself was good, the ice tea and mineral water drinks were delicious. Overall good job the only thing I would have liked is for the food to have been left behind after the staff finished serving, as we had some guests who arrived very late. Would use again.

Stephanie and the Cabaki team did a phenomenal job on our graduation party. I can't tell you the number of guests that pulled me aside to rave about the food and ask for Stephanie's information for future events. Stephanie also knows her audience... her suggestion for Chicken Parmesan + pasta for this crowd of recent high school and college grads plus their parents was SPOT ON! We wanted to venture away from the standard barbeque or mexican dish options served at most grad parties, so we definitely stood out among those this grad season. Cabaki takes care of EVERY detail... just give them space to stage and display, and they do all the rest. Overall, Cabaki's service, value and professionalism were simply outstanding. I would hire them again and refer to all my friends.

Very Professional, Knowledgeable, On Time, Great layout of the food and I could go on and on! Daphne and her staff were on point! I wish there were more stars to give. Our event involved about 75-80 people. The price was very reasonable and her/staff was AMAZING! Going forward we are going to use her company for all of our catering events. Our company has a staff of 90 plus people. She even remember things that I forgot about. She made everything so easy. They were on time, they set everything up, came back and broke everything down. Would our company use her company again ABSOULTELY!!! In a word PERFECT!! On behalf of Butler Lexus we want to say THANK YOU!!

Where do I start!? First and foremost, from the very first consultation to the post-wedding; In-Joy Catering's staff was phenomenal! My now husband and I wanted the best catering around but of course budget friendly. Ms. Dena took her time to completely personalize every little detail for the two of us. There were even things that we never discussed that she went above and beyond and snuck in at our reception! From the time we stepped foot into our reception venue the table settings and the staff stood out. The servers were in Black Tie apparel and very respectful and well spoken. My guest raved on the service as if they were actually at a restaurant. I can go on and on of my experience with Dena and her team but I will leave it up to you to complete the review of such a great service! I would refer her to anyone looking for a cater ! Thanks Dena for helping make our special day even better and stress free!

I used Rich to cater a high school sports banquet. In my initial search for a caterer, Rich was quick to respond to my inquiry and offered suggestions and gave me prices for a menu. I had to work with the booster club board and coaches to nail down a date and Rich was accommodating in holding my tentative dates and working with me via email. Two days before the scheduled banquet, we discovered we would not be able to have the banquet on the date planned. Again, Rich worked with me, gave me options and waited patiently for the new date to be set. The banquet turned out great! The food was delicious and Rich and his team were very professional in setting up and taking down (I never knew they left the building - they were so quiet!) I would definitely use Rich again and I know that many of the attendees enjoyed the meal and asked me for his business information.

Chef Kerby was catering an event a my coworker hosted around the time of the NBA Finals. The game was good but all anyone could talk about was the food he prepared. You can tell Chef Kerby takes his time to make sure you appreciate the meal as much as he did preparing it.

We had Taqueria cater a corporate lunch and it was excellent. Everything was perfectly prepared, astonishingly affordable, and they are some of the nicest people to work with. The food was so good that I know of at least one person that ordered dinner from them to take home to her family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
