I am using Above Grade for Spanish lessons three times a week. In school I was taught all the grammar rules but was never forced to speak. Within a short amount of time I feel more confident in speaking Spanish, and I am noticing my progress.

This place is great. We wouldn't go anywhere else now. We went there to get SAT classes for my daughter who is a senior. She loved her teacher and her overall score jumped over 200 points. Since they tutor about everything we also got Algebra 2 classes for our son. His teacher was a great fit too and he will be studying with them again for SAT and ACT next year. I might take some Spanish classes myself. It’s not just the teachers, I really like how quickly they get back with me and how much they follow up with us. Their prices are better than all the other centers we looked at too. I am so happy we finally found a place that actually cares and is so down to earth. Couldn't be happier!

It was a blessing to have Conny as my Spanish tutor for more than two years. She is very flexible with students, focusing on both a grammar/vocabulary based curriculum and a fluency and practical applications based lesson plan. She is very personable and open as well. Highly recommend for any level Spanish speaker- she is great at teaching the basics but also knows how to promote thought provoking discussions for more advanced students.

If you are serious about speaking Spanish, hire Timothy. He makes learning Spanish fun and gives cultural context to help understand deeper. Our lessons are a blend of disciplined text learning, fun listening and talking in Spanish about life happenings, reading out loud news stories about current and past events. We are only three months in and I’ve aready seen so much progress as evidenced by visiting a Spanish speaking country with my wife last week and being so much more comfortable talking. Timothy has pushed me to hear and think in Spanish rather than to be translating all the time.

Mrs. Treu taught Spanish I-III at my highschool. I personally took Spanish I and II from Mrs. Treu. She was by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. She spoke Spanish flawlessly, with her added experience of living in and visiting Spanish-speaking countries. We were always taught the most effective and correct way to speak Spanish.

I'm a great tutor not only because I know my Spanish well, but I have the keen ability to motivate students to do their best. So even when I teach a student who is struggling at first, they end up gaining confidence in themselves and see the material as fun and exciting. To me, that is the greatest reward--seeing students' success and being a part of that success.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
