I hired Francis from Oh Good Dog Professional Dog Training to acclimate my two miniature schnauzer puppies. My goal was to have two well-adjusted household members and Francis far exceeded my expectations. He was gentle with both us (the pet parents) and the dogs, gave up practical guidance on how to train them, and left us with plans for continued training now that our 6 week sessions are concluded. I cannot recommend him highly enough and plan to reengage in the fall once our puppies have become a bit more seasoned.

Wow is the first thing I want to say. Also, before being recommended to Karisha and Dawn from a friend I had no relationship to them. I work from home so my Zegen and I are very close. Let's just say he's a little anxious when I leave him for a while. I noticed firsthand the difference when picking him up from Off Leash than from picking him up from friends/boarders. The real test is when I am bringing him to be dropped off there. You know dogs know way ahead of time where they are going and Zegen is not his usual uncomfortable self. We get there, I open the car door and he jumps out! Does not try to get back in the car!! It's hard to put in words how comfortable that is to me when driving away. I think it is safe to say that I highly recommend Off Leash Dog Training to anyone. Not sure if this is allowed or if it will be removed from this post but if you are overly concerned about your baby as I am about mine please feel free to call me for any further questions: 404.697.4317 Brad Williams

Yvonne, the trainer, was very good and patient with all the dogs. Each dog brought its own set of issues and she was able to deal with all the problems as presented. She has her own dog in the class which was a shining example of the utmost obedience training. I would recommend the training at puppy tubs. Bring the puppy early (i.e. 8 weeks of age) and often (don't stop after the very basic class session) so you can get an awesome companion animal

No dog behaviors change overnight, but Ann gave us a great plan of action and we have already seen some improvement and less anxiety in our rescue pup.

I cannot say enough about Sonja McBerry with Dog Training in your Home. The lessons she provides are so personalized and because they take place in your own home the training covers exactly what you need where you need it. Sonja did a great job teaching me how to work with and train my dog so she would be well behaved. Even after the private training stops the group lessons continue to benefit your dog. it is so nice to have someone you can rely on and turn to when you/your dog needs a refresher or you just have a question.

Jay has been punctual and straight forward from the first day he met with our dog and us. I really value his professionalism and reminder texts confirming appointments and true partnership with my family to solve my dog's issues. I find his flexibility to not stick to a formulaic plan, but opt for the best training route for my dog as we see what she needs, the most impressive factor. So far so good and I look forward to seeing all of the growth.

Individual dog training. Specifically, for jumping on house guests, leash pulling, and minor behavior issues. Shaun was responsive and helpful. He addressed all of our issues in turn and really helped us get our dog on the right track. I'd highly recommend him to anyone with pet behavior problems, big or small. He knew how to approach them all. Thanks Shaun!!!

I really enjoyed the personalized approach taken with this company. They really got to know my dog and made sure the recommendations and training were something that I could continue to work on in between sessions. It was the first place I've worked with where I felt like the goal was to improve my dogs behavior and nothing else. They really cared and made sure I was comfortable with executing the training recommendations myself before leaving. I learned how to read Cole's reactions and when breaks were helpful since training stressed him out a little at the beginning. I feel like I really understand how to read Cole now and really get to the root of his issues. Thank you!!

We had an wonderful experience with Lisa. She was very helpful with controlling the temperament of my puppy, his behavior has completely turned around. I purchased the four session package. Very fair price. Not only did my puppy learn a lot from her, so did I... I left with plenty of tools to implement in our daily life. Our household has been running much smoother since she came into our lives. I would absolutely recommend her to others, her service was outstanding!!

She was absolutely wonderful! Came over for a consult and took the time to have a great conversation about behavior, the canine mindset, and how to adjust certain behaviors our dog displays. She is extremely knowledgable, brought a ton of experience to the table, and we cannot wait to work with her again in the future. Would recommend her to anyone looking for a phenomenal dog trainer.

Lauren is a consummate professional and has an extraordinary talent working with dogs. I've taken several classes, puppyhood and beyond manners, with Lauren. The force free techniques used in theses two classes really worked well with my dog, and even 2 years later she has sustained the good behaviors taught by Lauren!

Terie is great to work with! She is very concerned about communicating the skills needed for a good dog/human experience. She was willing to answer my questions, and encouraged me to call her if there was anything I needed to discuss on the phone. She was fun to work with, and I learned much from her. She convinced me not to give up on Sadie's behavior!

Emily took the time to not only train my dog, but train me and explain to me why my dog was behaving the way she was. My dog would always begin barking right when I would start a conversation with a friend. She demonstrated first hand ways to respond when my dog was barking in order to stop the barking while positively praising my animal. She is a professional, clearly educated on animal behavior. I would definitely recommend anyone to leave their animals in her care!

I was at my wits end with my dog. As heartbreaking as it was, I was at the point that I was going to have to re-home my precious pup. My dog was jumping on people, running out the front door at any chance she could get, barking, not coming when called, pulling me all over the place on the leash, chasing cars and other dogs. It was a living nightmare. Thank God I found Jennifer at A Divine Dog Training Academy! She saved my sanity and my dog. Jennifer is a true miracle worker. Not only did she train my dog, she trained me as well. Her training method was fun for me and my dog. My dogs behavior problems were fixed very quickly as well. I could not believe how fast my dogs behavior changed for the better even after just one training session. If you are at the point of giving up on your dog, please don't.....just call Jennifer.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
