Great to work with. Austin put up with my crazy sleep schedule. He and his crew removed at least 11 huge tree stumps from my yard, with two of the largest being in a tight space between my house/deck and my neighbor's fence. They removed them without any damage to either structure. They completed the work in a very timely fashion, gave me fantastic advice, and even acted as contractor in finding me a company to build a fence for me. I highly recommend Overstreet Lawn Care. I will be having them return in the spring to help me with my landscaping.

We hired Cascade to repair a broken sprinkler line. Matt came out on time, pleasant, and prepared with everything needed to complete the job. He was great to work with and very knowledgable! The work was completed quickly and the price was on par with, if not a little lower, than other estimates. He also did a great job of restoring the ground, mulch, etc. around the repair. I would highly recommend Cascade!

I just wanted to thank Aaron and his crew for a well-done Project. The quality of work they do is phenomenal. After they started work, there were several challenges because of numerous tree stumps once they started clearing the area. Aaron brought in additional crew members besides what he estimated and completed the project. On a scale of 1 to 10, the quality of work and level of professionalism are both at 10. 1. He never changed his initial quote even though the job had extra complexity 2. He is very honest, and he does not want to come and tell you the job is complete until he feels it looks great for him as if it’s his own project. 3. With the entire crew he shows good leadership – he sincerely cares about everyone that works on the project. When you work with a company that cares about their employees you know they are driven by some core values. I will not hesitate to call you for my next project. Please keep up the good work Aaron– if you continue this way you guys are going to be the best Landscaping company in this area.

I had an excellent experience with Cal Scapes and I am so glad that I hired them to do my yards today! The owner was on time, professional, listened very carefully to what I wanted done, was able to answer several questions that I had about trees and he had a great deal of knowledge about different flowers, plants, bushes and trees. I was very impressed with his knowledge in overall horticulture and landscaping. My yards look absolutely beautiful and I will definitely be hiring Cal Scapes to do more work in the near future! GREAT JOB!

I just had my second landscaping project completed by Genesis. The first project was in December 2015 and involved removing underbrush and small trees around the perimeter of my yard for installation of a privacy fence. I was so satisfied with their work I hired them to come back to clear out the rest of the underbrush in my backyard and to cut some tree limbs that had grown over into my neighbor’s yard. I also had them install sod and remove shrubs in the front yard and plant a couple of vines next to an arbor. It was a lot of work since I have a big yard and they completed the project in 2 days. They did an excellent job of cleaning up afterwards and the chief landscaper, Marcos, was awesome. Before starting work on the project he did a walkthrough with me to make sure he knew exactly how I wanted things to look. We did another walkthrough afterwards and I could not have been happier with their work. I can actually walk around my backyard now without tripping over underbrush and I appreciated how his crew did not damage or remove any of the vegetation I liked and wanted left alone. The only word of caution when it comes to hiring a small landscaping company is that it’s important to allow for some flexibility when it comes to scheduling. My project was delayed because of bad weather which led to them falling behind schedule with a couple of their other clients. That did not bother me because I was not in a rush to get the job done, but not everyone is as flexible as I am. The important thing for me was that the job got done right the first time and Genesis did just that. We are already discussing our next landscaping project and I will definitely be using their services again. Thanks for the great job!

Every part of my experience with DYG Landscaping was great. I found Daniel to be knowledgeable about the job, from the consultation to the follow-up to the scheduling, and finally the installation. When I considered two types of shade tolerant grass for my backyard, he gave me information that allowed me to make an informed decision about the one that would work for our yard and situation. The communication was a 10/10! If there were any weather delays, he'd let me know in advance. He was flexible, as I was not home during the install, but came back when I was home to explain how to care for my newly installed grass. I will definitely use DYG again and highly recommend him for landscaping jobs, of any size. 3 pallets of zoysia sod 1 dump truck of back fill to level yard Cut away branch canopy to let in more light Extend gutters away from house via PVC

Company provides immediate quotes based on Google Earth views and measurements of your garden. An in-person visit might have avoided one small missed area and one area that was weed-eated unnecessarily. However they got all the edging done so professionally that i am happy to have them come in regularly. The garden looks so well manicured now! They did a thorough job. Nothing half-hearted about it. Prices reasonable.

Where to start! I feel like we've gained an outdoor landscaping partner for the long haul. We had a huge tree fall in our yard from our neighbors house this spring. (we live close to Virginia Highlands) It destroyed the front yard. We were looking to re-do the front flower beds anyway and then realized after this we needed an entirely new lawn. We got multiple quotes for a full sod restoration. (changed from fescue to Zoysia) Working with Nelson and his entire team at Legacy Outdoor Living was an absolute pleasure! It's rare to find a company that communicates well from start to finish in the landscaping business. Outdoor stuff does not always go as planned but Nelson did a good job being in constant contact as we dealt with the natural ebbs and flows of the calendar due to weather, etc. Nelson spent a lot of time with us on the front end of the project discussing vision, time frame, expectations, etc. He was quick on his quote turnaround and was sensitive to all of our requests, including budget. (Legacy is very reasonable and we feel were the best value out of all the quotes we got) - plus you get what you pay for and these guys are well worth it! We had them take out all the existing destroyed fescue, replace with Zoysia and also take out all of our old and dying trees, shrubs and plants in our plant beds lining the house. The new yard and plant beds look exceptional! One thing Nelson will really try to work hard on, is helping you build out a yard that looks great, but is also manageable for a person without a "green" thumb- My wife and I are now excited about taking care of our new lawn as opposed to being intimidated by all the previous work needed to tend to an "over planted" front yard. (prior owner's doing) We cannot wait to use Legacy later this year on the back yard project! Nacho is awesome as well! Great to work with! Sincerely, HK A happy "in-town" Atlanta customer!

Darius and his crew responded promptly, priced the job fairly, really took the time to listen to us as homeowners as far as what sort of look we wanted to achieve... And when work days came, they worked through sun and some rain, as many hours as it took to get the job done and done right. We have had Darius and his team do additional work at another property we own, and same result - they worked above and beyond to get the job truly done right. He follows up with us to make sure all is going well and there are no issues, and we will absolutely continue working with him in the future. Gladly recommend him to anyone.

After getting quotes from several contractors, we chose to work with Hayden and his team. Phillips Home Services remodeled our backyard by installing a patio, walkway, a retaining wall, then landscaping the entire yard. Hayden is awesome to work with and provides great design ideas. He listened to what we needed and his team did a great job. Their pricing was very competitive and reasonable. Would highly recommend!

When I my wife and I decided that we wanted to transform our backyard into more than just a yard we reached out to Greentree landscaping. We were referred by 2 of our neighborhors who said that they had the best experience with them. When I first met Jay and Britain I knew immediately that they were the real deal. They were on time, kind, and listened to the ideas I had in mind for our yard. They offered me many solutions that all ranged in price and when I told them what my budget was they helped to work with me to ensure that my budget was not gone over. They did a fantastic job on the project and they were very punctual with everything that they did. My wife and I are extremely impressed with the high quality of work that they did and how professional they were. They have a great work ethic and are a great team that works together to come up with visions of what can be done for you and how they can transform your property. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs landscaping or hardscaping done. They did great and we are very pleased with how the final product came out.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

What's the best way to maintain your lawn?

Keeping a lawn lush and green requires consistent mowing, weeding, watering, fertilizing and more. If your lawn is particularly large, it may make sense to hire a full-service lawn care provider. Whether you take a DIY approach or bring in the experts, maintaining your lawn requires a range of tasks.

Plan to mow the lawn often, allowing it stay longer than may seem convenient — longer grass is healthier grass. The general rule is to cut off no more than a third of the grass blade. This helps prevent damage to the lawn as well as keeping weeds from taking root. It’s also important to remove any weeds, then prevent new ones from growing. In spring, consider spraying a pre-emergent herbicide on your lawn to prevent crabgrass and other types of weeds from sprouting from seed. During other seasons, broadleaf weeds like dandelions can be pulled by hand or sprayed with weed killers. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, allowing the sun to help dry the grass. Make sure to thoroughly soak the lawn so that the water penetrates several inches into the ground.

Lawn care also requires feeding; look for a mixture of fast- and slow-release fertilizers that include nitrogen. Some lawns also benefit from aeration, which creates small holes to let air, water and nutrients penetrate the grass roots. Although most homeowners can manage these tasks on their own, a full-service lawn care company can handle them on a regular schedule, taking the guesswork out of maintaining a beautiful lawn.

How do you look after your lawn?

Having a beautiful lawn doesn’t just happen by magic. A multi-pronged approach to lawn care will result in a healthy lawn that will have your neighbors green with envy. The national average price for multi-service lawn care ranges from $40 to $50. Whether you tackle the project yourself or hire a lawn care professional, looking after your lawn requires consistent work. A baseline of lawn care is keeping your grass mowed and your irrigation system working properly. Fertilizing plants and grasses, as well as trimming and pruning foliage, may promote the health of your plants and lawn. Many lawn care pros offer different packages with varying monthly fees depending on your lawn size and the services you desire. Here are a few examples of average lawn care prices:

  • 1,000- to 2,500-square-foot lawn: $60-$90 per month
  • 5,000-square-foot lawn or larger: $110-$150 per month.
    • Includes lawn maintenance, cleanups and irrigation repairs. The company trims shrubs, pulls weeds, blows out yard waste, fertilizes and does minor irrigation repairs.
  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
  • 8,001- to 15,000-square-foot property: $35 per week/$140 per month.
  • 15,001- to 20,000-square-foot property: $40 per week/$160 per month.
    • Includes mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
