Wonderful ladies with wonderful hearts. They treated us as if their children were getting married but with the professionalism one would require. Pastor Kathy spoke with such authority although I saw a tear from her eye as the processional came down the aisle. She made sure we were in the right places and that everyone was less nervous standing there. She even made sure the music was on queue. They are great officiants and work well together. You cant go wrong with Behind the Vow. The ceremony they perform makes you want to stand Behind your Vow!

Counseling is not something that I would ever imagine to be one of my resources to help my relationship get to where it is right now. When we decided that we wanted to do that I thought it was a bad decision to do so and sort of looked at it in a negative way. We didn't know where to start and who to really trust like that to talk about our marital issues. A friend then told me about grace connection, I was still a little reluctant to start therapy but decided to go anyway. I can tell you going to counseling has changed my whole perspective on how to deal with issues in my marriage, friendship and life itself. I wanna thank pastor Gracia for being such an an amazing counselor. Based on our association with him now , we would rank him as one of the best marriage counselors ever. It is with great pleasure that we would recommend the exceptional pastor Garcia. It is rare to meet a marriage counselor with as much compassion and self-awareness as pastor Garcia. His resilience, positivity, and humor are especially astounding given the challenges he encounters on a daily basis in the therapy sessions with diefferent couples. Thank you again for everything. I know that with everything you've taught us and by the grace of God our marriage will last for as long as God intended it to last. Thank you and God bless.

Corlette's compassionate yet empowering therapy style has helped me get through some of the toughest times and decisions of my adult life. She gently nudges me through these difficult issues with professionalism, genuine care and sound advice. Corlette never ends a session based on time. She ends when she feels I am in a sound place and often with a touch of humor. Although I consider myself a strong a capable person, I have no idea how I would have gotten through the past several months without Corlette's incredible guidance. Thank you Corlette. From the bottom of my healing heart. You are truly the best!

She's very realistic about her work and her sessions with me. Taylor doesn't take sides when it comes to couples therapy, which makes her sessions more insightful of oneself.

John is awesome! He is very honest and unbiased. He stayed with us much longer than we expected so we definitely feel as if we got our money's worth. He is thorough and he didn't leave until we both were at ease. We will definitely be using him again bc this man is the truth and if there's any hope, he will help you resolve your issues! I definitely recommend him for relationship therapy😉😉😉

I was a bit "on the fence" about pursuing a Reiki experience, however, due to my reasons for wanting to have a session in the first place, I felt I had nothing to lose. So, I didn't know what to expect when I first met Jodi. I'm so glad that I was connected with Jodi, because she is amazing! She was, fortunately able to fit me into her schedule rather quickly, which I was grateful for. Upon first meeting her, she has a very calming, reassuring presence that put me at ease. She patiently took her time to establish a rapport with me, to understand why I was there, and how she could help. We went on to have our Reiki session, and I felt the effects immediately, and in the days to follow. At the end of our session, Jodi went on to take her time to help interpret what she found, and gave me specific therapies to use to continue to help me help myself to get to a better place. I went back to see Jodi for another session since then, and plan on continuing to have more sessions with her, because I sense a true connection with her skills and abilities as a healer. I'd like to make an important point, something I had to remind myself of when seeking out a Reiki practitioner...Don't get caught up in the aesthetics of the facility that the practitioner is in, or be distracted by whether, or not the facility has a lot of "bells and whistles", shiny objects, or seemingly, the right appearance. The therapy room where I visit Jodi is in a non-descript, office park, albeit a very pleasant facility, once inside, where Jodi shares space with a chiropractor, and massage therapist. The session room is much like you'd find at any private salon, or spa, and Jodi has made it quite nice with scent, candles, calming music, etc. The most important thing, and I suppose, should be obvious, is the practitioner themselves. Jodi is amazing, and I believe she has a true talent, or gift that I am grateful for!

My encounter with Shontel Thomas was nothing short of life changing. I went to Shontel in the midst of experiencing extreme depression and anxiety. Initially I was unsure of therapy and opening up about my issues, but Shontel was extremely easy to talk to and made me comfortable about opening up. She is extremely professional, warm and made me feel like she truly understood me and cared about what I was going through. It was evident that she really wanted to see me improve and would take the time to encourage me even outside of our sessions. She was very knowledgable and gave me great exercises and tools to help me work though my issues. In a short period of time I experienced many positive changes and growth as we worked through things. Even when she relocated she continued to counsel me via phone which helped me stay on track. I continue to apply the tools that she gave me in my day to day life and it has made a great difference. Shontel's passion for helping people is evident in all that she does!

I went to see Whitney without having any prior experience with therapy. I wasn't sure what to expect, but decided to give it a shot. She was very warm and inviting, and instantly made me feel comfortable. I will admit that initially it was hard for me to open up, but once I began to, it was much easier for me to continue. Whitney gave me space to speak everything that was on my mind, and was able to help me understand more about myself. One session turned into two, which turned into three, and so on. She was able to help me through issues that I wasn't even aware I had. We talked about everything, from family, to professional life, and even sexuality. She never interrupted me, but instead interjected when necessary in order to help me resolve problems I brought up. I have seen a drastic increase in positivity and motivation in all aspects of my life. Never once has Whitney made me feel judged about anything I have told her, and for that I am grateful. I actually feel like I can open up more to her than most all of my family and friends. Whitney really creates a safe space, which was very important to me. I have recommended her to a few of my friends who have expressed interest in seeking therapy, and will continue. I am glad I chose to seek therapy, and even more glad that I decided to see Whitney.

In the counseling sessions with Tonya Jordan I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses and she offered me useful skills to reinforce my strengths. Attending my therapy sessions with Tonya Jordan was the absolute best decision I've made in my life! She helped me see things in terms of success and accomplishment and she was always very encouraging. Tonya Jordan has done more in a short time to help me than other professionals have in years. Just being able to talk about my feelings helped me so much and having homework to accomplish between sessions was also helpful in keeping me focused. Tonya Jordan showed tremendous concern and passion, was very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and has literally saved my life. Thanks! My sessions with Tonya Jordan have allowed me to take control of my life again. I recommend Tonya Jordan to anyone, any day, for counseling. Antoinette Steele

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
