We hired Equality to replace rotting trim and damaged hardiplank, to paint the entire exterior and trim on our two story stucco front home, and to paint our interior two-story foyer. The quote we received was competitive, the painters were professional and courteous, and the job foreman was very communicative, keeping us updated on findings while working to replace trim, fascia and hardiplank. Work was done neatly, with a thorough clean up every day. Finished result: gorgeous. Multiple compliments from neighbors. Very happy, would hire again.

I hired Felipe to complete some drywall, paint, and railing repairs in our basement after we had a small foundation leak and the remediation company company removed the bottom 2 feet of drywall in 3 rooms. I also decided to have him paint our bedroom, prep and paint over 15 year old wallpaper in our dining room, and paint the other rooms in the basement. All I can say is that he did an awesome job. Showed every day at 7am and basically worked to 6pm. Prepped the work areas to make sure the areas stayed clean (floors, furniture, etc) and made sure I was happy with each repair before moving onto the next one. Would absolutely recommend him to anyone needing drywall and paint work done.

rgSmith gets my highest marks!!! I received 3 quotes from painting professionals through Thumbtack and selected rgSmith to paint the exterior of my ~3,000 square foot home. The responsiveness, work quality and overall professionalism of rgSmith was spectacular. Doug and his team delivered an amazing result, on time and all at a great value. Initially, I didn’t select rgSmith based solely on price although their quote was incredibly competitive and relative to the outcome it was a fantastic investment in our home. Additionally, the rgSmith team were an absolute pleasure to work with and they will be my first call when I paint the interior of my home. Finally, I am going to post on our neighborhood FB page that rgSmith painted our home and urge my neighbors to use Thumbtack, receive some quote and undoubtedly they will have the same wonderful experience that we had with rgSmith.

Found out about J&H Painting from neighbor in Woodstock, GA. Phoned for a house painting estimate and Hal came out for consultation. Hal responded promptly and professionally and I received detailed estimate next day. After receiving HOA approval Hal scheduled project for next week and a professional paint crew arrived on time and completed project within three days. Very satisfied with J&H Painting service and product. A very professionally run company.

Great work! Aaron stayed till 3 am till my massive IKEA build was completed. He knew his stuff and stressed safety and building the products to high specifications (there were no screws or bolts left over when he was done)! He knows IKEA stuff and built me 3 chest of drawers, 1 makeup vanity and 1 bed. He also helped me hang a painting above the bed. Highly recommended!

This was our first time hiring off thumbtack. Was very happy witj how quickly people started to respond. We had 4 people come ou and give quotes for tile backsplach and interior paint. We ultimately chose express painting for his knowledge and quick responses. I cant stand someone who doesn't return my calls. We are pleased with the house. One cause i didnt have to do it and two the price and it came out nicely. My only compalints with express painting are how they rush through. I was disappointed when i came hkme the first day to hear they were wrapping up and in my opinion it wasnt done. Lots of rushed and missing areas and old paint bleeding through. We spoke to the guys there and they had already put up most of the stuff. We explained to them that we were not happy and touch ups needed to be done. They called kris and he called us back right away and we explained how some parts were missing and he agreed to make them do it. I hated to watch them pack up but they said they had somewhere else to be. As we walked through the house with open eyes as they started to work again we noticed so much more. Corners that hadnt been repaired like we discussed. We told the main guy and you could see he wasnt happy as they knew fixing it would require them to come back to paint. We called kris who did not answer twice. We then sent a text messgae and he said he couldnt call right now but called his worker right in front of us. So i was a little disappointed about that. He then called us and i explained i didn't want to be rushed in the repairs wr felt like we needed to make. I mean we just spent 1150 on paint. I wanted it right. He assured me he wasnt rushing hut didnt wanna come back 6 times for touch ups which threw me off. I wa shoping to hear that he wanted it right. He told us to use blue tape and marl the areas of disappointment and they would return the next day to fix it. We spent time and did just that. They came and as i got home were wrapping up again. 98% of things were done. Still a few places werent fixed but we are getting carpet next week so we can paint the places oursleves at that time in case the carpet people make an scuffs. I would recommend him just remind them to slow down. I know time is money bit the interior is so important. You see it everyday and notice all the imperfections. We would hire him again for another project just for his willingness to return phone calls. I would have rated perfect if not the rush feeling we had

Fast response, got the job done quick too and very well. Best Value compare with other quotes that I got. Jose cleaned our gutters, pressure washed the front steps + front wall of our three story townhouse that had black stained on it from our full/dirty gutters. It looks so much better now.. Thank YOU!

This was my first time rolling the dice and making a hire through Thumbtack and Cory was awesome! The guy is truly talented and did several projects outside of just installing the double french door. He also did our flooring, backsplash, framed and installed another door and several other projects, and we'll definitely reach out to him again! We hit a major bump in the road because the door we purchased was built too wide and we had to open a wall. His prices were very fair even when we had to open the wall...which contractors often take advantage of customers in that situation. He was also honest if something was out of his area of expertise which we certainly appreciate and had great cost effective ideas to accomplish other projects. He was very accommodating and polite while working in our home. He spent approx. 2 weeks doing a lot of work and would clean up each day before leaving which was impressive...and very helpful since we have young kids running around the home. I'd highly recommend him for any projects you need done!

As an engineer we have a saying that goes "good, fast, cheap; pick two). We got pushed back a little further than originally anticipating but as I worked in construction and weather it was understandable. They were BY FAR the lowest price on architectural shingles and lower with this price than all but one or two who quoted 3-tab shingles. I didn't see any nails on the ground after the job and Ray told us we could load any trash besides paint and something else before the trash company picked up the container a couple days later. They pay per pound as that's the only way I've ever found plus haul and deliver and maybe number of days. Ray was easy to work with and I know we had some plywood sheets replaced. Cover your stuff in the attic as there was a mess up there which I should of anticipated as he said he replaced several sheets. There were nail penetrations in the attic roof (quite a few) which I could bend sideways with a hammer. I'm not stating that last part to complain but more so as a courtesy to the business for future clients. We feel we got much more than we paid for which is VERY rare when dealing with contractors. If you want super pretty attic ceailing it will cost you and the competitors who bid a lot more didn't guarantee it to us except one who did use a better pad but was also a grand and a half less than TWICE what The Art of Home Improvement charged. I would recommend to my family members and friends in a second (unless they want a metal roof which I don't know if they do or not.)

Antonio was very professional and top notch. Came out multiple times to inspect the roof after my tenants complaint of the leak coming back. It was determined the leak was not active and the stain had just came back through the paint....with that being said, Antonio went above and beyond and sealed an area of the chimney that was outside of the issue they were responsible for in case. Thank you, Antonio.

Shane and his assistant repaired by deck to the specifications that we wanted. All the repair work was completed in one day and a few weeks later he completed the job by spraying my deck with clear waterproof. Overall, I'm happy with the work he and his assistant did.

Inmer was a joy to work with. He gave us a very fair price on our exterior paint job, and not only expertly painted our home but also fixed significant exterior damage and made it look new. His sharp eye for detail and strong work ethic really helped make house flipping a success. We've already hired him to do additional work. You may find cheaper painters, but you won't find a better value. Inmer doesn't send people to paint, he does the work himself with his team. You won't go wrong hiring him!

I hired Mr. Baynes to paint the interior of my house. It was a large job (including walls, ceilings, trim and doors). He did a wonderful job. He was on time each day, trustworthy (I was comfortable going to work while he painted). He cleaned everything up before leaving each day and kept in touch to let me know his progress. I would highly recommend Mr. Baynes and will certainly use him again for some other projects around my house.

I made arrangements to have two rooms painted. They were on time and very professional. They were to match the paint I had in the great room but they showed me a color that was richer in color. After they finished my bedroom it was so pretty that I had them to paint the rest of my house. It is beautiful and my daughter and my girls friend agreed. I can wait until Tuesday when the interior decorators see it. I know she will love it and it matches my new furniture. When they got through they when over the work they had done to make sure it was excellent. I love it!!!!

From the moment I contacted Scott my experience was enjoyable. He was quick to come out and provide a quote and spent plenty of time with me during our first meeting to discuss expectations and plans. I was really nervous because it was my first time to ever paint. Scott provided me honest opinions and advice and was very patient with me. When I finally decided on my paint colors five star was able to quickly arrange a time for the project to happen. Kristen was my project manager and did an absolute amazing job walking the painters through and making sure they knew exactly what to do. The crew was enjoyable to be around and treated my furniture with care. They were hard workers and really made sure the job was done exactly right. When they were through they cleaned up and even vacuumed my floors . Everyone with Five-Star exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly recommend using this company. Thank you again for the outstanding customer service and paint job.

I needed my front porch deck, trim and trellis pressure washed, painted, stained and sealed. Diward, the owner, and his team provided an on time project delivery that included professionalism, thorough work, and clean up. My deck and porch looked brand new again and I was able to put my home on the market and get multiple offers after one day. I also used C&R for my paint and staining of my side deck, fence and a major Sheetrock repair.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
