Scott and his team came well prepared to work on our project. Due to the irrigation setup from the builder, they had to get creative on our options to add a water spigot for our garden area. In a short time, they looked at all options and presented the most reasonable, cost-effective solution. Highly recommend 5K!

Adrian did an excellent job of removing dead plants and transforming my flower beds. He picked up all of the plants and soil from the store, which meant I did not have to worry about transporting them. He even went back to the store to buy more soil. He trimmed large limbs from a tree and came back, after being paid, with a chainsaw to smooth out rough areas. He was phenomenal, and I would highly recommend him. He has a very sweet spirit and does everything he can to ensure complete satisfaction.

The guys came out on Easter Sunday to troubleshoot my irrigation system, they quickly diagnosed the problems and quoted me a price to get everything up and running like new. They showed up the following day, earlier than expected, which was a pleasant surprise. Very friendly crew and explained everything they were doing. The work was completed quickly and done well, the yard looked better after they left than it did before they came! Replaced all the pine straw and mulch and left no trace of the yard being torn up to complete repairs. Nery stuck to his quoted price and went above and beyond with parts and service. He has a new customer for life, can't thank him enough! It's always nice to find people who know what they're doing, and these guys do.

Mr. Wilkins made some repairs to the walls in our home and the ceiling in our garage after we had some water damage. He did a great job on the areas repaired, completed them in a timely manner, and the price was reasonable. We will use him again in the future and will recommend him to others.

We just moved into our new home and have had a few tasks to be completed to meet our needs. Matt was one of my best choices. He was clear, communicated promptly and worked very hard in completing our irragation needs. Wow he and his partner worked very hard and when completed he walked me through every detail. I am so pleased but mostly I was impressed with the second efforts he made to insure I was happy. Please call him if you desire watering systems for your yard! You will NOT be disappointed! I could not be more pleased. Every effort was made by his team to make me feel happy and impressed! Satisfied is an understatement!

Thank you, Aaron and LeafyLawns! We just finished building a pool in our backyard and it was total mess. Clay clay and more clay that is all I remember. Aaron came to give us a quote and to look over project area. He gave us a lot of info about what he is going to do and what product he will use. Great guy by the way! His team was able to instal 2500 square feet in one day and also plant few plants and a tree for us. So far so good. Lawn looks green and beautiful. As a bonus he gave us free sprinkler which was not expected from him. Thanks a lot guys!!! P.S. Check out my pics

Omar was very personable and professional. He arrived promptly and did a good job and cleaned up nicely. I had him remove some old shrubs and plant some new ones. I will use him again and recommend him. He told me he used to be a landscaper for Pikes and his experience shows.

Mowed, edged, trimmed shrubs. Updated plastic trimmings around plant beds to concrete trimmings. Picked up and transported the concrete trimmings for nominal fee. Did all the work quickly and without supervision. I came home to a beautiful new lawn and landscape. Cannot be more pleased with the work! For anyone who has been hesitating to make updates, hire this pro! It’s worth the price, and the difference is breathtaking!

I had an excellent experience with Cal Scapes and I am so glad that I hired them to do my yards today! The owner was on time, professional, listened very carefully to what I wanted done, was able to answer several questions that I had about trees and he had a great deal of knowledge about different flowers, plants, bushes and trees. I was very impressed with his knowledge in overall horticulture and landscaping. My yards look absolutely beautiful and I will definitely be hiring Cal Scapes to do more work in the near future! GREAT JOB!

I just had my second landscaping project completed by Genesis. The first project was in December 2015 and involved removing underbrush and small trees around the perimeter of my yard for installation of a privacy fence. I was so satisfied with their work I hired them to come back to clear out the rest of the underbrush in my backyard and to cut some tree limbs that had grown over into my neighbor’s yard. I also had them install sod and remove shrubs in the front yard and plant a couple of vines next to an arbor. It was a lot of work since I have a big yard and they completed the project in 2 days. They did an excellent job of cleaning up afterwards and the chief landscaper, Marcos, was awesome. Before starting work on the project he did a walkthrough with me to make sure he knew exactly how I wanted things to look. We did another walkthrough afterwards and I could not have been happier with their work. I can actually walk around my backyard now without tripping over underbrush and I appreciated how his crew did not damage or remove any of the vegetation I liked and wanted left alone. The only word of caution when it comes to hiring a small landscaping company is that it’s important to allow for some flexibility when it comes to scheduling. My project was delayed because of bad weather which led to them falling behind schedule with a couple of their other clients. That did not bother me because I was not in a rush to get the job done, but not everyone is as flexible as I am. The important thing for me was that the job got done right the first time and Genesis did just that. We are already discussing our next landscaping project and I will definitely be using their services again. Thanks for the great job!

Company provides immediate quotes based on Google Earth views and measurements of your garden. An in-person visit might have avoided one small missed area and one area that was weed-eated unnecessarily. However they got all the edging done so professionally that i am happy to have them come in regularly. The garden looks so well manicured now! They did a thorough job. Nothing half-hearted about it. Prices reasonable.

We recently moved into a new renovation in Belvedere park and needed a lot of work done in the front and backyards. Both areas had trash and invasive vines embedded in the ground, and the backyard was almost completely bereft of grass. In addition, the soil was hard and rocky. Lamont, owner of Landscape Legends, responded very quickly to our inquiry on Thumbtack and sent us a message. When we wanted to set up an appointment for an evaluation, he came the next day, was prompt, and very personable. That night he gave a line item quote of what it would cost to sod the front and back, the labor, put down mulch, and remove trash and vines. Other companies were slower getting out to our house for an evaluation, and even more important, some did not even send a quote after saying that they would. Lamont was always prompt with his replies and the cost that he projected was less expensive than virtually everyone else. When we decided to go with him, he began almost immediately and did the majority of the work on a weekend himself along with a two man crew. He provided helpful guidance on watering and had no problem clearing out embedded trash and other nuissances. Landscape Legends is professional, yet low key, which is the best combination. I would highly recommend them!

Where to start! I feel like we've gained an outdoor landscaping partner for the long haul. We had a huge tree fall in our yard from our neighbors house this spring. (we live close to Virginia Highlands) It destroyed the front yard. We were looking to re-do the front flower beds anyway and then realized after this we needed an entirely new lawn. We got multiple quotes for a full sod restoration. (changed from fescue to Zoysia) Working with Nelson and his entire team at Legacy Outdoor Living was an absolute pleasure! It's rare to find a company that communicates well from start to finish in the landscaping business. Outdoor stuff does not always go as planned but Nelson did a good job being in constant contact as we dealt with the natural ebbs and flows of the calendar due to weather, etc. Nelson spent a lot of time with us on the front end of the project discussing vision, time frame, expectations, etc. He was quick on his quote turnaround and was sensitive to all of our requests, including budget. (Legacy is very reasonable and we feel were the best value out of all the quotes we got) - plus you get what you pay for and these guys are well worth it! We had them take out all the existing destroyed fescue, replace with Zoysia and also take out all of our old and dying trees, shrubs and plants in our plant beds lining the house. The new yard and plant beds look exceptional! One thing Nelson will really try to work hard on, is helping you build out a yard that looks great, but is also manageable for a person without a "green" thumb- My wife and I are now excited about taking care of our new lawn as opposed to being intimidated by all the previous work needed to tend to an "over planted" front yard. (prior owner's doing) We cannot wait to use Legacy later this year on the back yard project! Nacho is awesome as well! Great to work with! Sincerely, HK A happy "in-town" Atlanta customer!

I hired Marco Bolanos to do some landscaping work at my daughter's home in Glenwood Park. The reason I hired him was because his bid for the job was approximately one-third the amount of the bid I got from another landscaper and because he seemed very knowledgeable and honest. Also because he could do the job as soon as we wanted it done. My initial impression of him proved correct: he is honest, ethical, and does excellent work, even though he charges much less than other professional landscapers Also, whereas the other landscaper who gave us a bid wanted us to pay him 50% up front, Marco did not want to be paid until the job was completed and we were satisfied with it. He showed up on time on the day he indicated he'd be there, and he and his crew worked hard and finished up the job in one and a half days. What they did was the following: clean up an old garden bed bordering the front of the house and plant new shrubs in it; clean up the backyard, which was filled with overgrown weeds, unwanted shrubs, a little fishpond surrounded by brickwork (my daughter wanted this taken out because she wants her baby to be able to play in the backyard when he becomes a toddler and a pond would be dangerous), transplant some viable shrubs to better locations in the backyard, and seed and mulch the whole yard. My daughter was very pleased with his work. When I went down to Atlanta (I live in Athens) a couple of days later to see the results, I too was very pleased except for one thing that Marco apparently hadn't understood that we wanted him to do, which was to transplant some liriope plants from the backyard to the front border garden, to fill in some gaps in the liriope border along that garden. I texted Marco about this, and even though he had already been paid, he came back the next day to take care of this. Many landscapers would not have done this once they'd been paid for a job. So, all in all, we were very pleased with Marco's work and my daughter and her husband plan to hire him again in the spring to re-sod their front yard. They plan to recommend him to any friends who need landscaping work done in the future.

Leodegario helped me fix a water stain mark on my ceiling. He has done a great job in cutting out the dry wall and patching it back. The job was priced reasonably and there was no extra markup when he saw the issue. He is trustworthy and I would definitely work with him again!

Hayden and his team did an outstanding job for us. First rate from the time they came over to meet my wife and I to finishing up everything and then even coming back to assist on making sure we were happy. Our neighbors came over and told us just how awesome the new landscaping looked (and we cant wait until Spring to see the others plants come up). We are also excited to hopefully have Hayden and his tram complete the second phase and to transform our backyard!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
