I just sent a direct message to Virgil on his website because I thought I would not be able to submit a review since I originally declined his quote. I checked the Thumbtack site again because I really wanted to give him credit for a job well done. Before his initial response with the quote, I had already hired another company; however, after they didn't show, I called Middle Georgia Home Solutions back. Virgil came out within the hour to give me an estimate, and was able to do the job the same day. I was impressed with his professionalism and knowledge. He showed interest in my lawn, and gave me tips and suggestions. He did a good and thorough job, and even sprayed weed killer in the cracks of my sidewalk and along my porch. I will definitely call him again! Sherry Strong/Warner Robins, GA

Installation of an outdoor electrical outlet. Randy was prompt in arriving to provide a very fair estimate, kept me informed as to when he'd complete the job, and prompt in arriving to quickly and efficiently complete the job. Top notch quality and works great. Price and quality are outstanding. If he does this on small jobs, imagine how good he'd be on a major electrical installation. Highly recommend.

I hired Ben to rebuild and paint my rotting colums on my front porch then paint my front door and trim. He is punctual, keeps true to his deadlines, transparent in cost, keeps open line of communication and delivered on the job that I opened up a bid for on thumbtack.

Finish job in two days as agreed. Very nice. Had little problem with the 4.5 ft. gate installation. Hung a 4.5 ft. gate on a 4x4 pole. I only hope it holds up to the wait of the gate.

I had a footer placed around the perimeter of my back yard IOT keep my dog from digging holes under the fence in my yard. I also had the company to install a concrete slab at the entry of my gate and a fence unit to protect my AC unit from being destroyed by my pitbull. The quality of work is excellent and company (Steven Duke) went above and beyond to ensure my satisfaction. I will recommend to anyone!! Thumbs up!! Great job. T. Dumas

Greg has completed many jobs at my house. First he remodeled our three room apartment downstairs. This included installing a shower, painting, installing lighting fixtures, mountilng cabinets and painting them. He also takes care of our grounds. We have about 3-4 acres and his ground keeping skills are impeccable.

If you need help or just want someone else to complete that “Honey-Do” list – Call Mark! I highly recommend Mark Knobel for your home improvements & repairs. He is responsible, courteous and does an excellent job! He’s a bit old-fashioned; he shows up, does it right the first time or explains the potential limitations/benefits re how a repair can be done as a short-term or long-lasting fix. With a work history in aircraft machinery, Mark can do many more things than most. Over the years, Mark has completed many ‘fix-it’ items for us: garage door maintenance, wood fence and gate latch fixes, sealing leaky windows, doors, roof and pipes and even concrete irrigation canal repair. Mark has removed and then installed a new water heater, garbage disposal, dishwasher, kitchen and bath countertops, several sinks, faucets, toilets, rain gutters, numerous doors, hinges, locks including punch pad-style deadlocks. He has added, attic stairs to a ten-foot ceiling, additional blown-in attic insulation, window shades and re-shingled our entire roof. In addition to small tasks, Marc has helped make our house more beautiful; doing an amazing job with larger-scale home improvement projects including interior/exterior painting and installing solid hardwood floor with beautiful wood trim. Most recently, Mark converted a basic outdoor shed into a fabulous work space. I now have a warm and inviting Studio! Mark added insulation, air conditioning, a sink, ceiling lights, beautiful cedar walls & ceiling with Mahogany wood trim, extra porch lighting and an electrical outlet on each wall.

Lake Oconee Fence and Decks were very professional and hard working. They went above and beyond what was initially discussed. In the middle of the fence installation we changed our minds and wanted the fence back a little further. They had no problem removing posts they had already put in and relocating them for the new location of the fence. I highly recommend Lake Oconee Fence and Decks and I will be using them again in the future for other jobs around our house as they can do anything.

Great work! After seeing his detailed work ethics for installing my backsplash in the kitchen, I hired him to finish my basement... and he gave me an excellent quote. He hit a gold mine when he was selected for the tile work! I have already given him 2 referrals. He will be a busy man for a while.

I am a young professional who is in a wheelchair. I bought a single story foreclosed 1,600 sq. ft. house in midtown and contracted with Jill and David Ellis to remodel it and make it handicap accessible. They leveled an uneven cement floor, installed a new Mahogany wooden floor throughout the house, installed new appliances, and remodeled the master bathroom out of marble. Jill set it up so that I can roll myself into my shower stall and take a full shower while remaining in my wheelchair the entire time. I wanted my backyard fenced for security and instead of buying the preassemble thin board units they used pressured treated decking boards and built a custom fence that looks great and you can not easily scale it. They even attached carpet strips across the inside of the top so that if someone did try to climb over it their hands would be cutup by the carpet tacks embedded in those strips. Instead of just installing a new front door with the standard short screws that the prefab unites come with, they removed the those short screws and replaced them with 3 inch long screws so that the hinges were secured to into the actual frame of the house. The lock hardware was removed and they installed a 3-foot strip with correct cutouts for the door to latch and the deadbolt to sink into. This 3’ strip they too secured into the frame of the house again with 3-inch screws. The install was tested a few weeks later as I came home one night to find that someone had attempted to kick in the door. They put some effort into but the door did not fail. The police had to use a Jaws of Life rig to pry open the damaged door. I contacted them the day after this happened and they came and immediately installed me a new door. Clearly I think highly of their work. Great Job Jill and Dave!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
