This was my first time using Thumbtack. Scott responded to my project request to fix my gate of my outside fence in 5 minutes and fixed my fence that day. Scott was on-time, friendly, professional, explained the issue, and the quality of work met my expectations. I would definitely hire Scott again.

I posted the project to stain my fence in the backyard on Thumbtack and got a response from Felipe within the next hour. He arrived the next day as we agreed to give me a quote for the job and by far the best price I have gotten from multiple contractors. He also recommended the stain type I need to be using to last long and helped me in selecting the color. He went a step further and stopped by Home Depot to pick up the stain. He did an amazingly thorough job staining both sides of the fence (even in the hard to get areas and bushes in the wooded area behind the fence). Felipe Barrera is a thorough professional and I would hire him in a heartbeat to do any paint job at my home as well as recommend him to all of my friends and family in town. I would have given him 10 stars if there was a way to do that - Enough said!!!

Andre is extremely knowledgeable and detail-oriented. He was very flexible during the entire process. My fence plans changed from the original plan and he came back out no charge to adjust the quote. He is careful to dig only where it is safe to do so according to 811Dig. Some contractors will just throw up a fence regardless of knowing where power and communication lines are buried (My builder's contractor did this). He created an order for materials so that there was no markup. I was even able to get some of the materials cheaper since they had gone on sale. Andre had two additional workers on site the day of the job. They were all polite and patient even when dealing with one of my aggressive neighbors. The team removed my old fencing in a matter of 30 minutes! About 6 hours later, I had a brand new better quality nicer looking 6ft privacy fence along my property line and much larger yard. I would definitely recommend his services to others looking for fence installation or repair.

Mr. Jimmy helped to repair, paint and improve our home. We had old exterior paint, missing siding and rotted wood on the soffits, plus a small porch with rotted wood columns. Him and his team pressure washed my house, repaired all the rotted siding and soffits, painted and built a new porch that is twice the size of the old one. It took 1 week for him to take my house from old to new and make it the best looking house on the block. We had and still have more work to do but I am VERY happy with the outcome. Mr. Jimmy shows up when he says he will with a team of professionals. This was my first time with an exterior project this big. He went above and beyond to let me know about pricing when he ran into something unexpected. He worked within my budget as close as he could and explained everything up front. We would hire him again.

Leonard did an excellent job installing a 6ft wooden privacy fence for us at a very good price. Leonard also fought through rush hour traffic to get to our house for an estimate and he was able to measure and give us the estimate even thought it got dark before he could make it through the traffic. When Leonard came to install the fence our terrain was very uneven and we had a lot of overgrowth where the fence needed to be installed. Leonard showed up on time, cleared what he needed to get the fence in, and installed the fence beautifully despite the terrain. He got the job done in one day and provided us a receipt with a one-year warranty.

In November 2015 I hired Mr. Hood to perform roof repair to fix a leak. He responded promptly by phone and I explained where I believed the leak was coming from. He stated he could come by the following day to inspect and give an estimate. As promised he showed up on time and provided a fairly priced estimate and stated he could complete the repair the following day, which I agreed to. Long story short, he had to come back two additional times before the leak was finely repaired. Being a former construction contractor myself, I understand how difficult it is to “retro fit” an existing issue especially a roof leak. Mr. Hood promptly replied to each of my text messages letting him know that the leak was still happening after the next rain. He always replied promptly and scheduled to come out the following day to repair. On the third attempt he successfully repaired the leak which was thoroughly tested with the torrential December rain we had. ***The point I would like to make is that Mr. Hood was always very professional and on time and did what he said he would do and his repair quote was reasonable. I would recommend him to anyone who asked. D. Houston

My company and I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Robinson on the renovation of our commercial building in Roswell from October of 2016 to April of this year. During this time he did a number of various projects for us including: installing new sheet rock, tile, tile trim, and painting to the interior of the building. To the exterior, he installed beautiful board and batten siding, built a picket fence around our HVAC unit and installed a bike rack to comply with local code. He completely transformed our building. I can recommend him highly and without reservation. Throughout the course of the renovation, Mr. Robinson was a consummate professional. He was efficient and provided attention to detail throughout each phase of our project. Our job was done with care and precision. I would not hesitate to refer Henry to anyone needing quality services from a trustworthy contractor. Thanks again Henry.

Brian showed up on Monday to collect down payment for materials and by Saturday the entire fence was completed. He and Velma worked diligently in the freezing cold weather to dig fence posts holes Tuesday, emplace posts in concrete Wednesday, and place pickets Thursday and Friday. The fence is great; our dogs love it. Brian designed it to mate with our neighborhood fence at the rear of the property and my neighbor's fence on one side. It's sturdy, pressure treated, and a complete privacy fence with no gaps.

Overall I am very pleased with the way my gate turned out. The only hiccup was when Keith came out he quoted me a price which I assumed was for labor and materials. Turns out it was for only labor. Yes it was stated on my quote, but everything was done on his mobile phone to process our transaction. I did not open the quote to review. We talked and it seemed great so I hired him. It has been a very rare event to have a contractor come to my house and only quote me labor and if they did, they specifically mentioned it to me while talking. I should have asked, but I felt like Keith should have stated it was for labor only. In the end Keith ate half the cost ($150 roughly) of the materials to make it right which was very much appreciated.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
