Your burning questions: answered

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

How much does landscaping cost per square foot?

The cost of landscaping can vary widely based on the type of plants you wish to have, the amount of grading required, the condition of the land before work begins, and other factors. Adding in designer or high-end landscaping, as well as hardscaping such as sidewalks, walls, or patios will add to the cost. To find out how much your landscaping will cost, contact landscapers near you.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

How much does landscaping improve home value?

Landscaping your property can boost the value of your home between 5% and 15%, according to Better Homes & Gardens. They specify that this is the amount of value added when you upgrade the condition of your landscaping from poor to good, though these terms are subjective.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

Marco sodded the front and backyards and did some clean up of areas with overgrowth. He was very knowledgable about the best sod for the yard, and did a great job. The backyard had some uneven areas from erosion. Marco brought in landscape dirt and he leveled out the yard before sodding. His crew showed up exactly when scheduled and worked to complete the job in one day. It's been 2 weeks, and the yard looks great. I will definitely use Marco again for any landscape needs

Daniel is a professional well informed landscaper. He and his crew has transformed our backyard into a very desirable setting. My husband and I are relieved to hear that the Dallas grass in particular, and other weeds will not be returning with the help of regular lawn treatments that will begin in a month. Thank you for an excellent job!

The past three times that I have scheduled appointments with Omar, he never showed up and failed to show any type of dependability. On two of the missed appointments, he never reached back until weeks later. I have decided to work with more dependable landscapers who care about how their customers are treated.

I had BTS Landscape complete two outdoor projects for us: 1. Rebuilt a small wood retaining wall 2. Rebuilt a set of brick steps The pricing they gave us was very fair. More importantly, the crew showed up on time every day. Most importantly, they did a very professional job on both projects -- the wall and the steps look great!

Very pleased with our revamped back yard!! After grading, we no longer get massive puddles across the entire yard, and the sod is already greening up nicely. :) Highly recommend; DYG Landscaping was able to completely clear brambles and underbrush, grade the entire yard, lay sod, lay pine straw, and even prune a tree for us in a single day! Fantastic work!!

The Davila family did an amazing job landscaping our entire front yard! They modified an existing sprinkler system, built an extensive retaining wall exactly as we envisioned it, brought in fill dirt and topsoil and graded the yard, installed sod and planted all of our plants. And all at a very reasonable price. I would recommend this company to anyone. If you're looking for quality work at a reasonable cost this company is for you!!

Excellent company to work with. I had change of heart on design and asked him to come back out for second assessment, and he was very punctual and professional. He provided some great recommendations and provided excellent quality of work. Thank you Daniel for the professionalism, being responsive, and never making me feel like being pressured into a situation. I would highly recommend DYG Landscaping and would definitely use them again in future projects. Thanks again, Happy Customer!

I would definitely recommend S&H Pro Cut! Josh was very responsive when I contacted him. We made an appointment, he was punctual and quick to give me a quote. Two days later the job was done and Josh and his team did a fantastic job! I hired S&H Pro Cut to also do my yard maintenance after the great work they did. Glad to finally find a landscaper that takes pride in what they do, even if it's not a big money job!

S&H Pro Cut is amazing!! Josh and his team are responsive, do great quality work and maintenance. Josh spent over an hour trying to help us figure out where all the water was coming from in our yard. He figured out our main water line had cracked. He is such a nice guy and stands behind his work. You will not be disappointed if you hire S&H Pro Cut! They are the only ones we will be using for our landscaping needs. They are always on time, great at communicating and our yard looks fantastic because of them!

I had an excellent experience with El Maguey. They did a beautiful job on my landscaping project. Adrian is a master at what he does. He has lots of experience, and improved on my ideas. He helped me understand a better option to one of the plants I wanted (I didn't know it drew ticks and was banned in some states!). He and his team exceeded my expectations. I wanted 2 large boulders installed, and we agreed on the size of the rocks. Adrian & team went above and beyond to exceed what I expected (the larger boulders & ferns look awesome!). My front yard has never looked better. I will definitely use El Maguey for future projects, and highly recommend them.

Worst landscaping company ever. I had everything written in writing for my quote. He completed maybe 2- out of 6 requests, charged me more money, and left my yard messier than when he started. Awful company. When I called to complain, he offered a full refund or to come out and fix. I asked for a full refund because I was so upset, I didn't want him back out at my property. He back peddled out of a refund, I asked for a partial refund, he didn't give me that either. So, I have a messed up yard that I'm having to pay someone else to fix. Buyer Beware is all I have to say. Unfortunately, I paid him before I saw his work. I had faith in his online reputation. That's the only reason I am writing this review. BUYER BEWARE!!!

Through the planning phase of the project, I changed some of my specs and Marco responded EVERY night with a proper change that made sense and was logical. It became very apparent during the interview phase with all my bidders that Marco not only wanted the project, but that I knew he could do the project. The end result is a very unique project that did not use standard timber walls, but rather boulders that were almost 5,000 pounds a piece! Neighbors have stopped by to see a retaining wall that appears to be natural and beautiful. Marco was incredibly accommodating and was very easy to work with. Because we talked out the project, he was in and out very quickly...I highly recommend talking with him to ensure your project goes as smoothly as ours. One thing that really stood out was that he talked with kindness and respect to his crew. He also took in everything my wife wanted and responded with a smile. Marco is on my call only list for landscaping. He is honest, hardworking, dependable, reliable and takes direction and offers advice. Well worth it!

I have several complaints: 1- They are not professional on the installation of delicate wall or patio: My patio is wavy and my wall is kind of unorganized. when I told them to make my patio in a way that water does not stay in the corners, they made pavers all uneven and they put some different color pavers that we noticed later. 2- Installation of sod was done completely unprofessional, they did not compact and trill the soil very well. They did not clean derbies, they did not add lime and fertilizer, they did not rag soil correctly, they did not add compost. some parts of sod had overlaid. some of the sod was on top of rocks and stones. 3- Too much mulch on some parts 4- Did not clean the land entirely. 5- they did not check the weather initially, so when they brought in their gigantic bobcat in my small house, they left a lot of mess especially when it rained like hell which made my wife be super mad at them. They just want to get projects and make them done no matter shitty or awesome. If you do not know about landscaping at least see some youtube videos.

The owner of the company came to my house, took a detailed look at the garden and landscaping, and agreed on a monthly price to come out twice a month. On his very first visit, he started complaining about having underestimated the work he needed to do. He wasn't able to finish the job of trimming, pruning, and mowing in the first visit, so he returned to finish the next day. After he finished the work that was part of his first visit, he claimed that the price we had negotiated was not a monthly price, but a per visit price. He also wanted me to pay for $63 of mulch and a $75 delivery charge for the mulch! The important thing here is that he hadn't asked me before getting the mulch delivery. When I refused to pay him double the price we had agreed on, he quit. I paid him the agreed price, plus $140 for the mulch. The man did a good job, but he is very unreliable about sticking to an agreement. His price seemed to change based on his needs, not on what he had agreed to charge. This was a bad experience. Please exercise care in hiring this business. UPDATE 9/7/2017: The business owner claims he worked for 2 days for $200. He walked away with $275 after 6 hours of work over 2 days, which is very different from working "for two days".
