I wish we would've started with Arbor Tutors in the beginning. I've been very bad at math my entire life. Arbor went above and beyond of what I needed.

I tried to study and practice on my own for the GRE, but after I got my terrible scores back I knew I needed tutoring. My tutor was always punctual (often earlier than I was!) and thoughtfully prepared for our sessions based on my needs. I did poorly in the GRE quant section, so we worked on improving my confidence and speed (a lot of focus on strategy) doing GRE math problems. After re-taking the test, I scored 9 points higher! Obviously, I had to work hard to get these results, but a huge chunk of my success is because of my tutor.

Gary is a fantastic tutor, but even more, he is a kind and patient mentor. When our son started working with Gary, we immediately saw the light come on. He started to understand pre-calculus and his confidence increased ten fold. Gary made him realize that he could not only do the math, but he could master it. Gary is outstanding at explaining and demonstrating so that our son was able to understand and carry what he had learned back to the classroom. He is a rare find and a blessing to our family.

We found Robert in the middle of the school year in 2014. Our 8 year old son was having a very challenging time with math, and his father and I were not able to assist him without us all ending up beyond frustrated. Robert is soft spoken, kind, patient, encouraging an effective! Our sons grades have improved, and he comes home from school telling us that math is easier for him than it used to be! We would highly recommend Robert to any parent considering a math tutor for their student.

My daughter always seemed to have panic attacks leading up to tests. I was desperate to find a way for her to be comfortable especially as SATs were coming up. All I can say is after a few weeks with the tutors and life coaches at Chelsea International Education, my daughter’s confidence level went up a lot. She was not only prepared to take her SATs but her core academic skills have improved tremendously, which has helped her with her AP exams. The fact that all of the Chelsea tutors are fully qualified teachers, I think makes a major difference and really sets them apart. It really is a quality service and I am very happy to recommend them to anyone.

Accounting is definitely not my forte so being able to have somebody to discuss the topics and send me in the right direction for my assignments has been a phenomenal experience. With at least 10 years of real experience, she is adequately equipped to deliver high quality tutoring in her respective subjects. Her professionalism and quality work made a favorable impression on me, and reflected on the grades I received for the assignments. I would not hesitate to hire her in the future, and I do plan on using her expert knowledge through the remainder of my accounting course. 10/10 Would hire again! I am so thrilled I chose the right tutor!

I have hired other tutors for my son, but our experience with Gregory far exceeded all other experiences. My son's progress was very obvious after the first session, and now I look forward to getting instruction from Gregory for my daughter. He is truly an exceptionally good teacher! M. Jones

I am happy to express my total satisfaction with Dr. Li. She is very bright and knows her subjects well. But I am more impressed with the way she relates to students to "make learning easy." She is a natural Master Teacher with a gift for breaking down subject matter until students understand it.

I recommend In-Home Tutors, as our experience was fantastic. My son was tutored for SAT Prep for the verbal/writing sections, and the tutor was experienced, knowledgeable and professional. The tutor communicated well with us, had great suggestions for improvement and was always on time. If we need a tutor again, I will definitely contact In-Home Tutors.

    About

I know how to improve SAT scores! No, I did not score an 800 on Math. I missed one item and got a 770. So, there are people smarter than me, but I do know how to raise scores, and I do know how people make mistakes. My Asian mother, who is a professor in statistics, made me endure a SAT boot camp for one week. I raised my score on the math section from a 670 to a 770. She taught me all sorts of tips and tricks on how to take the SAT. Now, it is my turn to pass on what I learned to you! If you want to raise your score or learn how to strategically take the SAT, I can help. Try me out! If you like it, I can officially be your boot camp trainer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

    • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
    • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
    • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
    • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
