My husband and I can't say enough wonderful things about the awesome service provided by Aaron and his team at Leafy Lawns. They were prompt, courteous, professional and knowledgeable. Upon our first encounter, Aaron came to our home and walked our backyard with us. He was able to point out some solutions right a way. He made the process of taking our back yard from a barren desert to a thriving, beautiful outdoor space. He and his team also rid our front yard of an unsightly juniper bush, removed trees and pruned our Japanese Maple. My husband and I had a goal for our backyard, a place for our young children to run and play in a grassy backyard. Aaron came up with the perfect plan and executed it perfectly. We highly recommend Leafy Lawns for all of your outdoor needs!

Diane helped me plan, and then execute, a flower garden at my condo. She purchased some plants, the soil, and wood child. I purchased some plants also. She and Rusty were able to complete the preparation of the old bed (removal of old plants and lava rock) and the new planting in 4 hours. The process, from first email to final plant placement and woodchip dressing was seamless. Diane was professional and efficient, and Rusty was a competent worker who came up with a creative idea for using a large rock (I had brought with me from CT) as a conduit for water from the gutter. I am very pleased with my garden, impressed with the two-week turn-around, and will call Diane again for future fine-tuning. I recommended her without reservation.

I am so pleased to tell you about my experience with Quinton. I live in an apartment with a small garden at the entrance to my home. Not only was he the only Gardener who responded, but he scheduled the consultation and installation within 48 hours, even with the recent rain we experienced in Atlanta. My garden looks as good and the Commercial Landscapers who service our complex. Friendly, Fast and Affordable. He also plants vegatable gardens! I now have a seasonable gardener and friend forever. Inherited a beautiful garden. I know nothing about gardens. A beautiful spot was going to weeds. I needed help. Boy! Did I luck up. Within hours of posting my request, I had a contact from Chris. The next day, we were assessing the garden. That day, I knew we had a winner! I could not be more pleased!

I selected Martin to install several landscape features for my project: - A 30ft CMU retaining wall with brick ties - 25-30ft long boulder wall that is around 3ft tall - Two rain gardens (90sqft and 45sqft) with amended soil and ran the gutter lines into the gardens. Martin did a great job of explaining the entire process in detail from the specs of the wall to how the drainage will work. Rain gardens are a fairly new watershed requirement for the city of Atlanta and Martin researched the code to ensure that I would not have any issues during the site inspection. He was also very flexible in changing the scope of work as we progressed. We were impressed by his work and ended up having him do additional work which included: - A 25ft timber wall - CMU wall and piers for the front porch - Plant a Forest Pansy Redbud tree in the large rain garden During the project, we had a fairly heavy rain and I discovered that the smaller rain garden was not properly draining into the overflow. I let Martin know and it was corrected the following day. He ended up re-positioning the overflow pipe to be the lowest point and I have had no further issues. I almost forgot to mention that I live in the Virginia Highlands where the lots are small and the streets are very congested. Martin did a good job of managing the materials and equipment onsite to minimize the impact to the neighbors.

We had a really good experience working with owner Roger Bregenzer. He was patient and informative with us as we are non-gardeners. He has been in the plant business a long time and he has a very hard working crew. On his initial consult visit to give us an estimate for landscaping our wild and weedy steep hillside, he recognized that a large number of our tall pine trees had a beetle infestation and were dead or dying. He provided us with a great referral for a tree company and provided good service in temporarily removing some azaleas to provide an exit path to remove the trees. After having over 25+ large pine trees removed, we had Roger's crew return to replant the azaleas and drastically improve our step hillside with all new plantings and the addition of large rocks. He was able to repurpose or retain several plants that were already on the property and tuck everything in with pine straw for the winter. We can't wait until spring arrives to see everything flourishing!

I employed Sharon Dean of A Touch of Eden to provide landscape design and installation services for my home garden. Sharon provided some great visual ideas for what I could do with my ¾ acre lot that includes a steep slope. Sharon and I went shopping to look at what was available and she proved that she knows her plants. She was actively engaged in overseeing the installation of the project. I was very pleased with Sharon’s creativity and take charge approach to the overall project. I highly recommend A Touch of Eden for landscape design and installation.

I give my clients the personal attention that they need. I listen to all of their questions concerning any and all parts of their yard. My clients happiness is my number one priority.

Charles' background and philosophy combine to create a very unique approach to landscape design and client relations. A Charles Hodges Garden is a unique and seamless integration of both the home and its occupants with the outside world. Every element of a Hodges Garden reflects painstaking attention to detail. Charles utilizes many indigenous plants and materials in his designs and brilliantly couples the natural with the architectural. Each project contains traditional elements applied in distinctive and creative ways. The Southeastern Flower Show has recognized Charles' uncanny ability to creatively blend tradition and innovation with two consecutive "Best In Show" awards, and the Smithsonian Garden requested permission to duplicate one of his many original water features.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
