Sara is a sweetheart and did a great job for me! I needed help picking paint colors and she was on the exact page with me! I didn't trust myself so she confirmed a lot of what I was considering. Not only was she a real professional but only after a few minutes, I felt like she was a friend just hanging out and helping me pick colors! I can't wait to get the painting started. Thank you, Sarah!!

Delightful young woman, very efficient, very detail-oriented, finished the job (painting black furniture a cream color) quickly and for a reasonable price. Furniture looks lovely! I highly recommend her!

B4Design provided home staging services for my home. I am extremely pleased with the results. My home looks fabulous! Lori Noel was my designer and she is extremely professional, knowledgable, and creative. We shopped together and purchased a few items. I gave her full permission to move items around from room to room and I was amazed at the final results. The finished product looks like something out of a magazine. Lori is extremely well versed with color coordination and mixing of textures. My personal style is modern and minimalistic, and B4Design nailed it!! I highly recommend their services. From start to finish this was an amazingly positive experience! Y. Cook/Atlanta, GA

I am so thankful I hired Tracie to upgrade my home. My house was built in 2004 and the previous owners didn't upgrade anything. I was stuck with carpet throughout the house, linoleum floors in the kitchen and bathrooms along with cheap counter tops. The previous owners did, however, paint the walls some horrible brown color. The bathrooms were painted with what I call "prison cell grey." The fixtures also needed upgrading. This is the first home I ever bought, so I was overwhelmed until Tracie came into the picture. Tracie was awesome! When I asked her about paint colors, I expected an answer like, "go with a light blue," or something vague like that. Nope. Tracie provided the color code and a specific brand of paint. Tracie also recommended specific types of flooring (laminate & tiles), fixtures, back plashes and counter tops. Bonus - everything recommended came in UNDER budget! If you are looking to upgrade, improve or renovate your home, I strongly recommend Tracie. Her professionalism, attention to detail and passion were evident throughout the entire process.

Tracey was wonderful and fun to work with, going above and beyond my expectations. She is incredibly knowledgeable of all design concepts...from changing the way my front door and porch looked to recommending paint colors and staging every room in my house. She got to know me and worked to fit my style and budget. She has an amazing eye for color, texture and flow. She used pieces that I've had for years putting them together in a way I never dreamed possible. She transformed my entire house into a home that I am proud to show off.

Alisa was a great help in providing design ideas for our family room & game room area. She picked complimentary colors for the walls, a dark chocolate for the furniture, as well as painting the brick fireplace a light cream color, to match the floorboards & trim. She has an excellent eye, and we were really pleased with the results. We've had a lot of compliments on both living areas.

Words cannot express our gratitude for the work Lavonia did on our kitchen cabinets, walls, and base boards. She was meticulous and efficient and we could tell she really takes pride in her work. Her creative eye was so helpful to us in picking out the colors and tile for the floors. She worked with us on a very tight time-line to get everything done before we moved in, on a limited budget. She also worked with us around multiple on-going renovation projects that would probably send anyone else running out of the house. Lavonia, thank you so much for your patience and hard work. We can't wait to work with you on future projects.

Jenna transformed our home with style, color and personality. It was so much fun working with her to discover what we really wanted our home to become. Jenna selected fabric prints, wall paper, paint color, furniture and decorative items that I never would have imagined. It all fits our lifestyle and we love it. Thank you Jenna!

Kimberly helped us with a kitchen makeover. She was able to show us techniques to update our cabinets without having to replace them . She helped us to choose colors and textures that helped make our old outdated kitchen look like new. we needed to update our lighting and appliances and she was able to guide us in that process. I also believe she helped us to make choices on some things that saved us money. Her personality is such that when feeling overwhelmed with all the decisions you need to make she calms you down and helps you to see the possibilities in a way that is not so overwhelming. she was extremely helpful in finding a balance between my husband and my personalities and different tastes. I would highly recommend Kimberly to anyone who is looking to make changes in their home.

I have used Studio B Designs twice for different interior projects (both large and small) and plan to use them again for a third project (master bath renovation). Rachael and Adam really understand your own personal style, lifestyle and functional needs then recommend and select designs that work - whether it is room renovation, lighting, fixtures, paint colors, fabrics, tile, etc! And at the same time, they gently, appropriately push you in a design direction that you might not have envisioned but absolutely works. I completely trust them and could not be happier with everything they have done for me in my home. I love working with Studio B Designs and highly recommend you do too!

Cassie at MC Designs was easy to work with on designing our new two new office spaces. She handled the concept, space planning and layout, color palette, furniture/accessory/artwork selection, and implementation of the design. We plan on working with MC Designs in the near future on another upcoming project for our small business by having her design four new office spaces we are adding to our additional building within the next six months.

Denise responded to my inquiry within 24 hours of submitting by using Thumbtack and we had a phone conversation about my project and style ideas. She arrived precisely at the time specified to my new place. She came prepared with ideas, paint swatches and magazines with similar looks. Very quickly we got right to it and I could tell she knew my personal style and what I was looking for. I was very please we did not play it safe. It was very obvious I made the right choice to hire a designer because I could tell my brain did not think about the tones and bases of the same color, or how to tie it in around the room. I am in the middle of painting the place to her recommendation and already please with how it looks!

Thank you John Marc LSG for transforming my home to nothing short of amazing. They took the time out to get an understanding of what we expected and went above and beyond. We entrusted him with the job of painting and decorating our living, dining, kitchen and guest bathroom. He suggested a color palette for our dining room which caused some hesitation at first but the end product was beautiful. It has become my favorite room in the house and the one that gets the most compliments from our guest. Thank you again.

Zoe was wonderful! She helped me with a paint consult for the interior of my home. i was on a short timeline but she was flexible and able to schedule something that would work for me. Choosing color is so difficult - Zoe made the process a lot easier and she also had some suggestions that I would not have thought about on my own. She has a good eye for color and how well it will work in the room with what you have. Zoe will also be helping us with a laundry room reno - excited for that to begin!

Mhani is wonderful! She helped us rearrange our existing furniture and select new pieces for our home. She helped us to rethink the way we had setup different rooms to optimize the use of space. She chose great new furniture for us that worked with our budget and added color and character to our place by making custom pillows. I would highly recommend working with her!

Latoys's unique eye for color combinations allowed her to create awesome decor in both my living and dining space. I wanted to use burnt orange and brick red for my living room and she utilized some light blues and greens as well which highlighted my room. As for my dining room I painted in toasted almond and she paired it nicely with some light blues, creams and black which all turned out amazingly beautiful. She's a natural and I will be utilizing her skills for my new home as well.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
