Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a professional to mow your lawn?

Although hiring a lawn care company is more expensive than doing it yourself, it can be well worth the money. For starters, it saves you time and equipment maintenance, which may be justifiable financially. It also creates a more professional appearance. Plus, a pro can spot problems before they occur. This can save you money on expensive reseeding, aeration and other types of lawn repair down the road.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

How often should you cut your grass?

In general, weekly mowing is the golden rule. However, different lawns and conditions may require different mowing frequencies. For instance, if your grass is growing slowly due to dry conditions or a lack of sun, don’t cut it simply because a week has passed. And don’t cut more than a third of the length of the grass blade at any time. Also, ease up on mowing if the weather is going to be hot and dry, as the longer blades provide shade and can keep water from evaporating so quickly.

If you're unable to mow your lawn, consider hiring one of the best lawn care professionals near you.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a landscaper or lawn care professional when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a landscaper or lawn care professional, you can take safety precautions on the worksite by not making any physical contact, keeping at least 6 feet between you and the pro(s) at all times and using digital payment platforms instead of cash or check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Nilton and his team provided service in a high quality. Nilton not just mowed lawn but also would have some helpful suggestion on how to maintain or edge or take out some wild grasses.

Good service after first cut. Would give 5 star, but the mow was rescheduled a few times. Once they came and performed service, I was happy with the work. I will use again for next lawn maitenance.

J Garcia is FANTASTIC - he responds quickly, is always on time, has unbeatable prices, and goes above and beyond when taking care of our lawn (for example, when we simply asked him to mow our lawn, he also trimmed our bushes, blew leaves and cleaned our rocky backyard). I highly recommend!!

Octavius did an excellent job mowing the lawn after the other yard guy moved to a different area. He is also professional, courteous, dependable, and meticulous. He took his time, and it shows. I will continue to use him and am so thankful that I found him.

Hired for a one-off job, but the communication and negotiation wasn’t good. Paid $100 for my lawn to be mowed and had to cancel getting my hedges trimmed because he kept changing when he would make it back and tried to put words in my mouth about what we had agreed to.

He has not mowed the lawn twice per month as promised. He was there only 2 times since June 30 per tenant report. The last cut, the grass was so long, that when he left it on the lawn, it created dead spots, and clogged up the drains. His lawnmower broke my cleanout and security sign in the front. I have been paying for service twice per month and have not received that service. We started out in a good place, but have ended badly. Louise Berry

I strongly recommend not to use this service. There communication is very poor, they don’t acknowledge what you request, it’s very difficult to speak with customer service when you request a call back they don’t call you back. I had a problem with them before my first appointment the assigned crew didn’t show up nor did they respond to my email. I canceled the service but another crew showed up and mowed my lawn. I tried for several weeks to contact customer service to ensure my service was canceled but they didn’t call me back. A crew showed up without notice and mowed my lawn again. They tried to apply the 3 cut rule which I told them it didn’t apply because I canceled my service when they didn’t show up for the first appointment. This company will only cause you headaches.

Have their people do their job properly and to show up. First team quit the day before. 2nd showed up and did a horrible job. I reported it to the company. They assured me someone would come out and fix the job and wouldn't charge me until it was complete. Team didn't show. Another team was supposed to come. In the meantime the charged it credit card $71.46. What happened? No show team. This process started around July 14 or so. By this time, Aug 6 my lawn should have been mowed twice. What happened this last time? I'm home all day. Mid afternoon I get an email saying "service not performed a bad address." Other team could find it. They reschedule until Aug 20. With all of this rain my lawn will be a foot high. This is completely unacceptable. I contacted the company each time and the response is platitudes. I cancelled the service today and will find another company.

I am very disappointed in my service and I did let them know before writing this review (and the response was, “looked fine to me when I left”). I was charged $65 for mowing, edging and blowing. I was not home when the service was completed so I relied on the after pictures that were sent to me and I paid them via venmo. This is what I saw when I got home. Grass in my backyard is still 5 inches long, it’s just been flattened. Leaves were not blown at all. Everything looks terrible. I have never had a lawn service that did not include blowing leaves, but especially never one that did not include actually cutting the grass. Heed my warning: find someone else.

It saddens me to write this review because I used C&C Evans for several months for routine lawn mowing and yard maintenance. I had established a great repore with the owner, Ashton, and considered myself to be a good customer since I often gave him additional jobs (gutter cleaning, leaf blowing, hedge trimming, sheet mulching, etc.). However, I lost thousands of dollars when hiring him to do a larger landscaping project. I hired C&C Evans in March 2021 to do a grading and sodding project that I was assured could be handled well and in a timely manner. But...the sod installation, which should've taken only 1-2 days, happened over the course of weeks because the incorrect amount of sod was ordered. This resulted in brown patches throughout the yard (due to a mix of good and bad sod being purchased) and it took me weeks to remedy with fertilizer and consistent watering. The project also required them to re-grade my yard so that the back sloped down and allowed rainwater to flow to the catch basins. Despite repeated requests to slope the yard, the subcontractor simply leveled it and did so haphazardly as there are divots throughout the area where water puddles. It's been only a few months since I hired them to grade and install sod and I am now left with a muddy backyard after spending thousands on this project. I informed Ashton of this issue and even sent photos, but not once, did he or a C&C Evans rep contact me to resolve the poor work. For these reasons, I absolutely would not recommend them for any type of landscaping services other than mowing.

Sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they show up when you specifically tell them not to. This was a mess and headache. The first guy who actually showed left a patch of grass uncut because of acorns.😶 He was supposed to come back and finish the job. Instead, I was informed that he didn't want to come back, but that they would send someone else the next day. No one ever showed. STRIKE 1. Had another team scheduled for the next 2 weeks. The weather forecast stated that there was a chance for rain that week (about 30%). This team canceled my job 2 days before the scheduled service because of 'inclement weather' (side note - it didn't rain at all)...and tried to reschedule for two weeks later. Mind you, customers have to pay extra if the grass is over 6". STRIKE 2. I called to cancel the service. I confirmed 3 times during the call that the service was canceled and was assured three times that it was. Two weeks later, a guy showed up at my house to mow the grass...after I'd canceled and hired someone else to do the job. He got out of his truck and started cutting a lawn that had LITERALLY been cut the day before. When I asked if he was informed that I'd canceled, he stated that he'd never been informed. That my house was on his schedule, so he showed up to cut it. STRIKE 3. The service might work on paper, but in real life, at least in my case, it was a headache.
