Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long do pipes last in a house?

The lifespan of pipes in a house depends on the type of piping, according. Here’s a breakdown of how long pipes last, depending on the material:

  • Plastic pipes (PVC, CPVC, etc.): Indefinitely
  • Copper pipes: 50+ years
  • Brass pipes: 40-70 years
  • Galvanized steel pipes: 20-50 years

How do I replace the pipes in my house?

The best way to replace old pipes in your house is to hire a licensed plumber to do the fix. You and the plumber can start the assessment by figuring out when your pipes were installed and if they’re in poor condition. If the plumbing in your home needs to be replaced, the plumber may need to remove drywall or ceiling materials to access the pipes and perform the job.

How much does it cost to install piping?

Installing piping in your home will likely cost between $450 and $1,000 per fixture. However, it’s important to always get cost estimates from plumbers so you can properly budget for this project. Several factors will drive the cost to install new plumbing in your home.

For example, the size of the house and the number of fixtures will impact costs. And the type of pipe material also has a significant impact, with copper piping being the most expensive. Piping located in difficult-to-reach areas also drives up the cost, as does wall repair and add-ons like water softeners.

Learn more by reading our piping installation cost guide.

How often does plumbing need to be replaced?

How often your plumbing needs to be replaced depends on several factors, but the primary one is the type of piping installed in your house. Different materials (copper, steel, plastic, etc.) have different lifespans. How well you treat your piping also affects how often it needs to be replaced.

Here are additional signs you may need to replace your piping:

  • Your pipes need constant repairs and attention
  • There are signs of water decay, discoloration and leaks
  • Your drains lines endured damage from tree roots or severe weather
  • You’re remodeling your home

When in doubt, always ask a plumber for their expert opinion.

What’s the best type of pipe for plumbing?

The best type of pipe for plumbing depends on your needs and concerns. For example:

  • PVC lasts indefinitely and is easy to install.
  • PEX is easy to install and isn’t subject to corrosion.
  • Copper is durable and slightly more expensive.

Talk to your plumber about all your options, which may include other types of pipes (CPVC, polyethylene, ABS, polybutylene, etc.)

How much do plumbers charge per hour?

Depending on the service you need (unclogging a drain, fixing a pipe, installing new pipes, etc.), plumbers charge anywhere from $45-$165 per hour. Plumbers often operate on a fixed rate model, too. Some won’t charge hourly rates because the variables involved in their work makes it less practical to do so.

Plumbers will scope out the work, calculate the cost of parts, and roll it together with other fees to give you an estimate for the job. They may even offer standard flat rates for things like installing a toilet or a sink. Reach out to plumbers near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your project or repair.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

What do you do if you have a burst pipe?

First, switch off the water supply to reduce the water damage. You should also turn off the electricity for the part of your home that has sustained the leak, as it can be extremely dangerous if the water comes into contact with an electrical socket. Next, drain the remaining water from your faucets so it doesn’t freeze inside the pipes.

Once you’ve done all of this, search for qualified plumbers in your area and ask them to provide you with a quote.

What happens when a water pipe bursts?

When a pipe bursts, the water can cause indoor flooding and damage your home. If the pipe is in an accessible location, you will likely notice puddles of water right away. However, if the pipe is underground or behind a wall, it may cause reduced water pressure, a sulfur smell or discolored water. All of this can cause significant (and expensive) damage, which is why you should always contact a plumber near you if you suspect your pipes are leaking.

Does insurance cover a broken pipe?

Sudden water damage may be included under most homeowners’ insurance policies, but it’s typically not covered if the damage could have been avoided with proper maintenance.

For example, if a pipe in your laundry room suddenly bursts and causes damage to the flooring and walls, that is usually covered by insurance. But if a pipe under your sink has been leaking for months and causes your wood floors to rot, your policy won’t cover that damage.

Always double-check with your insurance agent (or another expert)  to see what your policy covers.

Very disappointed in the work. Called in to clear a clogged drain. Left me with a basement full of waste and did not cap the clean line pipe. So I was not able to use the water until I had to call another plumber to fix the problem.

Benjamin arrived on time, explain I might need to change the main pipe with a new one and gave a quote for $1700, I said it was too expensive and I won't be able to do it and then gave me an alternative offer - to patch the hole in the pipe for much less, I agreed to that and the problem seemed to be solved for now. He did a GOOD JOB and completed it ON TIME agreed. I got another quote from him for replacing a faucet, I didn't because I thought it was too expensive. In general, Ben is defiantly not the cheapest between Atlanta's plumbers but I think you can defiantly TRUST him to do GREAT PROFESSIONAL WORK for you.

We scheduled and they fixed everything in about an hour, maybe less. They installed a sink support system we purchased and replaced a damaged pipe. The price was in our budget and no problems since they left. They were running late by a few hours but were in contact with us in advance. Great service and we would recommend them

Phil is a professional commutator and a great plumber. His prices are very competitive and he is easy to work with. We ran into some significant problems with the county while replacing a sewer pipe. Despite a stressful situation, Phil handled several unexpected events with professionalism and confidence, explaining things clearly, and making me feel cared for the whole time. I will be using PNG the next time I need a plumber and would highly recommend. Thanks Phil!

10/10! Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. I had a water main break under my sidewalk, which cut off water to my home and flooded my yard. Within hours, Phil neatly cut through the concrete, dug a narrow trench through the yard, and laid replacement piping from the water meter to my home. The job done with quality precision; better yet, everything was done in half the time that it would take most plumbers. I will 100% be using P and G Plumbing for any future repairs and renovations.

Instant replacing of pressure meter and inspection of water heaters. Brandon and Tony was very courteous and informative and promt in all aspects of getting thugs done. Replaced our main water line yesterday and again very careful with our trees and plants and laying the poly pipe and connecting everything and flushing out the water tank. Definitely my go to plumbers for anything in the future. Thank you Brandon and Tony! Much appreciated.

Val was absolutely amazing. He was able to locate the leak from my shower pipe immediately! He went to the hardware store and purchased the new part for me and installed it all in the same hour. He even purchased new shower head options for my master while he was out because I mentioned through casual conversation that I didn't care for the one I had. He added it his quote and installed it. He didn't make a big mess or cut a huge hole like other plumbers. Val was very professional and honest and i would highly recommend his work.

CJ arrived within the arranged time frame and sent a courtesy text when he was on the way. He was extremely professional and did not seem bothered as I asked him questions pertaining to the process. Our appointment was for him to change the gas valve for my stove. Upon completing the project, I asked him if he could look at my garbage disposal because it was giving me issues. He gladly inspected it and even pointed out a pipe issue with my dishwasher connection. His prices are extremely reasonable. I have several rental properties, and I definitely will be working with him again.

These guys really know their stuff. I had a horrible water leak that damaged my cabinets, flooring, sub floor and ceiling in my den. Thw leak was so bad , mold was setting into the subfloor.. These guys came in and told me and showede exactly where the leak came from. They not only stopped the leak ,but they successfully treated and eradicated the mold completely. These guys were so good, I referred them to another person I know that had major pipe damage in her house. They successfully fixed her problem as well. I vehemently recommend these guys to anyone that that has plumbing issues. You won't be sorry and they're prices are reasonable as well.
