I would definitely recommend Breathe Hawaii for your hair and makeup. The owner Heidi Fowler contacted me and we discussed what I was looking for. She made hair suggestions based on where I was having the wedding and also let me know the beach I was getting married on was extremely windy. We agreed on a meeting time at my hotel (for a fee, well worth it), She even offered to help me get dressed, which is great for a destination wedding if you do not have anyone with you to help! She also made sure I was okay with her bringing an assistant to work on my hair while she did my make-up. The morning of the wedding, Heidi text me when she was on her way and arrived on time. Both her and her assistant were very sweet and professional. They instantly made me feel comfortable and were so personable. Heidi kept in mind that we were having an intimate beach wedding and did my hair and makeup to match, not overdone and very romantic. The eyelashes are a must and she has different types for you to choose from. My sister/mom were in the room with us; we talked and laughed the entire time, we felt like we knew her for so long. Waimanalo Beach Bay was definitely very windy and my hair held up. My make-up was flawless and felt very light, lasted for the entire day. I was extremely happy with the outcome, as was my new husband.

Are you looking for a hair stylist for your wedding? Look no further! You have found her! Nikki styled my hair for my afternoon vow renewal. She was timely and professional when she met me at my hotel room. I was really impressed by her creative style. She did my hair simply and elegantly (half up and half down) which was exactly what I wanted for my beach wedding! I don’t know how she did it, but my hair that doesn’t keep a curl managed to stay wavy all day! Nikki was friendly and easy going (which helped calm my wedding jitters). She even did both my little daughters’ hair. It was a very cute half up and half down style and both their hair styles stayed in place all day. I looked at salon prices and was discouraged at the expensive. Nikki saved me time, money, and added stress by coming to the comfort of my hotel room. Most importantly, she made me look and feel like a beautiful bride! Your search is over because Nikki is a hair style extraordinaire!!!

I would travel miles and miles for Katie...who am I kidding, I HAVE!!! seriously, I have scheduled layovers to have her work her magic on my hair! I have known Katie since she first started styling and from Day 1 I was always confident in every decision she helped me make about my hair... When it came time to choose a stylist for my wedding, I tried to think about bringing someone else to do the job, but I knew in the end that I had to have Katie by my side to make me look my best! She did an amazing job with my wedding hair (it was exactly how I pictured it!), and went out of her way to help the whole bridal party, and even gave some of the groomsmen a good cleaning-up. RECOMMEND!!! Weddings, events, stylist -- perfect.

Susan was a dream to work with. From our initial communications, to the hair and makeup trial and to the day of the wedding, everything ran so smoothly. Susan is organized, calm and very knowledgeable. Her team was perfectly selected for our event and everyone LOVED their hair and makeup, including me! My hair and makeup looked great through photos, ceremony and for the whole night. I am very grateful to have had the chance to work with Susan and Jireh Artistry and would absolutely recommend their services to any bride!

My experience was outstanding ! When it came time for me to do my photo shoot ,I called Leslie ,Being a hair salon owner I am very picky about my hair and make up.It was time for me to update my headshot for my website ,I turned to Leslie for guidance .She asked me some insightful questions about what I did and didn't want .I gave her a basic premiss .When she handed me the mirror to check ,I was stunned .Being in the biz myself I sort of knew all the tricks of the trade .But I have never felt that pulled together .I mean I couldn't even believe it !! Just simply beautiful work .I send all my clients to her when they have a special event ,Of the dozen or so clients of mine she has done 100% of them are overjoyed ! She is so calm, friendly and uplifting you feel like you've made a friend .I recommend her as her client ,And as a professional beauty person thats saying a lot ! She doesn't disappoint ! Stellar work !

I specialize mainly in the care of ethnic hair. I focus on the health of ethnic hair and have done extensive research on the prevention of hair breakage and growing hair. I use organic and natural products that are free of sulfates, parabens, mineral oil and petroleum that will strip our hair of the natural oils and suffocate our hair. Through my services, I will teach you how to care for your hair and what natural remedies will help give you healthy, strong, and beautiful hair. People often ask, what is good hair? I say, good hair is healthy hair. The services I include are deep conditioning, washing, and trimming of hair. I can do different styles like two strand twists, flat twists, braids, fishtail braids, cinna-buns, bantu knots, finger coils, flat ironing/blow outs and curling of hair.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

    What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.

    What is a seamless extension?

A seamless hair extension is a type of clip-on hair extension. The extension hair is called the weft. Near the top of the weft, a metal clip mounted to the weft on a silicone base is used to attach the extension to your natural hair. In a traditional clip-on extension, the base that attaches the metal clip to the weft is fabric.

People may prefer seamless extensions due to their lower profile; the silicone can be up to 50 percent thinner than the fabric, making the extension appear more natural — and, therefore, seamless. Seamless extensions usually can be washed (although you shouldn’t keep them submerged for more than 20 seconds) and heat-styled on lower heat settings. You can gently brush seamless hair extensions as well as have them dyed a darker color by a trained professional.

How much do hair extensions cost?

Hair extensions are synthetic or real human hair integrations that add volume and length to your hair. Hairstylists are trained in different techniques to attach extensions to your hair. The cost of extensions can vary greatly depending on the technique used to apply the hair, as well as the type of hair you select. Synthetic hair is typically the least expensive, human hair is next on the pricing scale, remy hair is next, and what is called “virgin” human hair is generally the most sought-after and most expensive. Remy hair signifies that all the cuticles are intact and running in the same direction, making for smoother hair extensions in the long term. Hair is deemed virgin when all the hair is from one donor and has never undergone any chemical processing. Hair prices will vary from company to company; here are some examples of hair from online retailers.

    • Virgin strands (25 strands weighing approximately 1 gram each) for hot fusion application: $44 per bundle.
    • Virgin hair weave (approximately 4 ounces per package): $149 each.

Here are some sample application costs from hairstylists.

    • Full sew-in: $175-$200 or more.
    • Partial sew-in: $125 or more.
    • Micro-link weft extensions: $300 or more.
    • Full-bonded extensions: $75 or more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
