Introduction: My name is Jean-Michel Jacquon and I offer Suzuki and Traditional violin lessons and viola lessons in Honolulu for children 6 years old and up, as well as for adults of any age. This website provides information on both violin and viola lessons on Oahu. As a full time member of the Honolulu Symphony for 18 years, and now the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, I have performed more than 2400 concerts in Hawaii and I have more than 25 years of experience teaching students of all levels. My teaching method is based on the Suzuki method and the traditional method of the French violin school taught in music conservatories all over Europe. Each violin and viola lessons are carefully planned and applied in agreement with each student's age, expectations and level. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY My teaching philosophy is primarily based on the Suzuki Method, but I do incorporate other methods as well, including the traditional method which is derived from the French school of violin playing taught in all music conservatories in Europe. The Suzuki method combines a music teaching method with a philosophy, which embraces the total development of a child. To quote Dr. Suzuki himself, " Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which one can learn. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children can develop to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited." The Suzuki method is based on a lot of listening and playing by ear, while the traditional method stresses early note reading, scales and studies. In my opinion, a mixture of both, Suzuki method and traditional method is the best. It provides a positive and inclusive atmosphere for the students to develop their skills and their love of music and it provides a quality musical education in a non-judgmental environment where all students and parents are treated respectfully. Through private lessons, masterclasses, chamber music and public performances, I want to provide opportunities for students to fulfill their full potential, both musically and personally. Raising my student's personalities, self-esteem, and confidence by using consistent, strong positive reinforcements is an important part of my teaching. I work very hard to let their talents grow to their full potential, without forgetting to have fun and to enjoy the process of music making. I take special pride in helping my students reach their desired instrumental and musical goals by giving them a detailed program of study. Each program is constructed from selected pieces of technical and artistic repertoire that address student's individual and current challenges. Violin lessons then become motivated, well-organized journey towards rewarding musical experiences. Violin lessons are also carefully planned and applied in agreement with each student's age, expectations and level. I am offering one try out lesson!... Take advantage of it! Aloha

Great teacher and a convenient location with parking. I decided I'd try and learn to play the violin at age 38 and Jean-Michel was my instructor for four years until I moved away. He has a good teaching style; he strikes a good balance between making sure you get things right and moving things along quickly enough so you don't get frustrated. Jean-Michel gave me a good foundation and since I've started I've played a friend's wedding, some intro music for a family baptism ceremony and performed on stage with a fiddling group. When I was ready to buy my own violin he helped me choose my violin and I love it. If you've been thinking about starting the violin, give it a try! I'm very happy I did.

We are very lucky to find Mr. Jacquon to teach my son violin. He has been our teacher for seven years now, and he is absolutely a wonderful teacher. He not only has excellent musical talents, he is also very patient and has great way with children. My son loves his violin classes, and he has been making steady progress. At seventh grade, my son tried out for Punahou Advanced Orchestra, and he got in. We credit Mr. Jacquon for the achievement my son have in violin! He is very good with teaching kids techniques and drawing their attention to details. We are also impressed that Mr. Jacquon is very considerate and flexible with make-up classes. Whenever we have to miss violin classes due to scheduling conflicts, Mr. Jacquon always try his best to reschedule another lesson soon.

Mr. Jacquon was my son’s private violin teacher from starting when he was 8 years old, all through his middle & high school years. He makes learning classical music and proper violin technique fun and rewarding. During my son’s high schools years, he prepped my son for numerous auditions with the Hawaii Youth Symphony and the Punahou school orchestra. In addition, Mr. Jacquon’s violin training also inspired my son to get involved with performing in extracurricular Chamber orchestra groups and community service holiday performances. There is no doubt that Mr. Jacquon has been a big influence on my son’s life ultimately contributing to his successful graduation from high school, acceptance to 5 universities, and receiving a music scholarship from the college of his choice!

My daughter took violin lessons from Jean-Michel for about one year in Hawaii. We were so glad we found him he is clearly a gifted violinist and a kind, thorough teacher. My daughter loved going to her lessons and improved significantly under his teachings. My daughter was able to learn many skills that she otherwise would not have obtained in school, and was able to get a higher seat in the school orchestra after a couple months of lessons. It was overall a great experience to have and we were saddened to stop the lessons only because we moved to another state. We are sincerely grateful, not only for his amazing violin techniques and teachings, but also for his kindness and generosity. My daughter and I strongly recommend him as a violin teacher for his skills and his equally wonderful personality.

Jean-Michel has been teaching my 5 children over the past 8 years. My youngest two started with him at just 4 years old. He is VERY patient, kind and fun with the little ones. All my children love him and say he makes playing the violin fun. He is also very professional and expects a lot from his students. Jean-Michel has helped 3 of my children earn seats with the Hawaii Youth Symphony, and has helped my high school graduate earn a music scholarship in violin. My now college student has gone on to play in the university symphony and continues to thoroughly enjoy playing the violin, thanks to Jean-Michel instilling a genuine love and appreciation of music education. I highly recommend Jean-Michel as a violin or viola teacher.
