Lonnie contacted me within minutes of the posting, came out the next day to quote the job, then built us three 6ft cedar fence gates & installed a new kitchen sink. All within a few short days. I didn't expect it to be done near as quickly! We'll be hiring Lonnie again later this spring for some landscaping projects. He is fair, honest, and friendly.

Let me start my review by saying I have a very steep hillside home with woods behind it. I interviewed 3 different contractors to install sod, place boulders, clean up the under brush and mulch- when Tyler came it was late on a Friday, generally the time most people would rather be at happy hour. I felt after meeting him that his bid was going to be beyond my budget just by his level of professionalism. When I received it I was very quick to hire him. He was the greatest, hardest working, reasonable landscape PROFESSIONAL. I tend to be a micromanager and I am really into landscape - but I felt comfortable to tell him to just "do what he thinks is best" with the boulders and new yard layout. I got home from work and as I expected, it's just beautiful.

Rex finished our mud room as well as some other jobs around the house. He walked into a mess, last contractor bailed on us and he finished everything. Bid us and didn't charge anything but his bid. On top of his outstanding work he was professional and He showed up EVERY single time he said he would.

Jack was the first of several contractors we tried to hire that showed up within a day or two and started work immediately- so prompt and reliable, which is sadly hard to find. We did a general quote over the phone which was far below what it ended up being but that wasn't his fault, our surfaces and materials required a lot more work than is typical, and Jack worked his tail off to get it done quickly while still carefully. He didn't even eat for 8 hours so as to not tack on additional time. He was pleasant to talk to and worked quietly. The end result is just what we wanted. I would recommend

Kody did a tremendous job bringing my vision to life. His attention to detail is unsurpassed. I am very particular and he made a point to communicate continually with me to ensure that it came together as hoped. I would highly recommend Kody. It is so difficult to find contractors that show such care for their clients. (or show up at all) He was very responsive and timely with the project. He is a true professional and very artistic. This is the third big pond project I have done over the years and he was undoubtedly the best I have ever worked with.

It was such a pleasure to work with Rocket Painting! I received wonderful customer service, great communication and am very satisfied with the quality of work! Everyone who worked on the house was professional, conscientious and took pride in the job. There is a mutual respect between John and his team which, from a customer's perspective, provides trust that the job will be done as explained and agreed upon. The finished product in this case WELL EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS! I would highly recommend Rocket Painting. I rec'd quotes from 5 contractors (which I also recommend as a learning experience), John was close to the highest but he instilled a level of trust that the job would be done completely, for the quoted price. He uses great paint (which he doesn't mark up) and Will (who is AMAZING) takes great care in every drop he put on my house.

My wife and I received bids from four contractors and decided to award our project to Metcalf Exteriors because we were impressed with Jeff Metcalf. He asked questions about what we wanted and showed us what he had to offer. The deciding factor for us is that Jeff is an Idaho native and lives in Owyhee County so we knew he knows how to work. Jeff transformed our home by installing new siding, fascia and soffit. My wife and I appreciate Jeff's attention to every detail. We found Jeff to be respectful of our space and we are very happy with his work. Before finishing our project, our neighbors were impressed enough to hire Jeff to fix their place up too. If you hire Metcalf Exterior Enhancements for your project it will be money well spent.

Mr Giddings was referred to me by a friend of mine. I live in a townhouse that had popcorn ceilings I was never pleased about. Mr Giddings was the only contractor who came in with the confidence to tackle the job. Very professional, personable, and clean.

This was a huge job. The work was great, not perfect but very good. They did not leave a big mess each day they worked (which was something I worried about) and were very friendly and good to work with. My only complaint was the timeline. They said it would take two weeks and it took 4.5. It was a big job however but there were several days that no one was there. But overall they were great and I'd recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
