Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: My background and education is extremely varied. I have two undergraduate degrees - a BA in Mathematics, and a BFA in Sculpture. Problem-solving is my passion, with both physical and theoretical problems. I began my tutoring career at BSU in 2007 after transferring from UofI. I have tutored all levels of mathematics, from pre-algebra all the way up to graduate stats courses. During the last four years, I have seen grade improvements of up to 40%. I am not going to lie and say I can do this for anyone. Tutoring is a two-way conversation, and my goal is always to improve pupil's skill well enough so my services are no longer required, and thorough understanding of materials has been reached so new and unique problems can be tackled.

As a returning college student, I found myself having to do math after a 20 yr + break. I am so grateful for meeting Ian. He gives excellent instruction and many different ways to comprehend the math language. He has great patience and is very flexible with my busy schedule. I will most defiantly use him in my future classes and will be on top of my list to hire for my children if they are ever in need of extra help. Thank you Ian!! JMM

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My pricing is not extremely complicated, but I get asked questions about group rates all the time from college students. I normally charge a flat $20/hour for one-on-one tutoring. I drop the price down to $10/hour/person for group rates so a group of two is $20/hour, a group of three is 10 each, $30/hour and so on. In my experience, unless you have a set study group or study buddy, one-on-one is the way to go.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Calculus and pre calculus are by far the most common math classes which need my services. I suppose at around this time the algebra work is beginning to get cumbersome for those who weren't strong in it. I also see several discrete students, because the diversity of subjects covered.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Remember that a tutor isn't there to solve homework problems, but to help the pupil develop the ability to solve their own problems. If you go away from tutoring lessons with answers, but not knowing how to solve the problems there is a big problem, because what about the test? There are lots of tutors out there, find the one that's right for you.
