Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

Contact several gate repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your gate.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Was willing to put the fence up in "parts" one side at a time as I could afford it. Said fence would take 2 days to put up... but got "busy" on another job and didn't get ahold of me to let me know they wouldn't be in to finish. Quote was to be in on a Monday and done on a Tue... fence was finished on a Thursday.

He is very calm and a nice presence. We’ve had many people compliment our fence and ask for Mike’s contact. We highly recommend Mike Priest!

Rob encountered several obstacles during my fencing project (increase in material costs, delay in receiving materials, equipment malfunctions, etc.). The entire job took longer than expected, due to the above mentioned obstacles. Rob's communication on the delays could have been better, but he eventually got the job done and it looks great.

Rob was the first person to come out and give me an estimate. He was prompt in his response to my inquiry. After we discussed what I wanted done, he wrote out an estimate and I was satisfied with his price. He was the only contractor who gave me an estimate the same day he came out so I decided to go with his company. When he came out the second time to go over the plans, I noticed he didn't have my front fence on his plans and it turned out he misunderstood what I was explaining to him on the initial estimate and it was going to be a lot more so I wasn't able to do the front fence. I was dissapointed and a little frustrated that he misunderstood because the other contractors I spoke to knew exactly what I was talking about. I still decided to move forward. He made an appointment to start the job and I made sure to express I wanted a dark color wood. When he arrived it was a medium-light colored wood. He claimed I didn't tell him that I wanted dark wood so I pulled up the text I sent him to prove I did. He called his supplier and claimed they had no dark boards for the price he quoted me and in fact the boards would be double the price of the light wood boards. So again, I settled and went with it. He did a good job with the fence overall. There was a gap from the gate to the back fence so I had to hire someone else to close the gap so my dogs would stop escaping. Some of the boards started to warp and look like snow skiis so I called and told him. He came out a couple days later and replaced them.

We needed our existing section of fence replaced with a 12 foot double gate. Nathan responded to us very quickly and was very professional during our conversation. He was able to fit our project in within a few days of my contacting him and finished within two days and under his original quote. We were very impressed with the quality and speed of which our project was completed and will definitely use All Hours again for future work.

Eric was very professional and prompt with communications. He was able to resolve some issues with our project. When his supplier bid the materials wrong, he paid the difference because he didn’t want to break his word to me, even after I offered to pay the difference. As far as I am concerned this is the only contractor I would bother with on this site. A man who keeps his word is worth doing business with. This is a legitimate review, written by a real customer. He built my fence, made it look great, communicated any issues with me, and again, kept his word, I honestly would have paid more to work with him, but he was my lowest bid.

Mike contacted us in reference to a gate we wanted on the side of our house. On June 8 he contacted us and made an appt with us for June 9. We messaged and he said he would be here in a few minutes. He never showed up or contacted us to reschedule. I messaged him a few times, the last one being June 12th asking if he still wanted the job or not. No response on June 13th I made one last time telling him last chance. No reply. In the meantime I had another guy out to get an estimate. It was an actual fence and gate company. Their estimate was more than we could afford at $400. Another estimate was more our budget so we considered them but on June 16 mike messaged us out of the blue. I regret even telling mike to go ahead and do it. It was in our budget and he assured it would be a quick job. He told us the supplies and labor were $130. He eventually called us and said he was mistaken because he had forgotten something and it would now be $175. We told him ok. June 17..we are waiting for him to show up. At 1:15 he says just leaving kuna. Has to make a quick fun to Boise be there shortly..then he says he’s leaving Boise at 5:00. Mike did not show up till 8:00 pm. He begins work on the gate. He’s here till 10:00. We kept telling him to just come back in the morning. He had no light out there so we have no idea what he was doing June 19. He was supposed to come at noon but didn’t he didn’t come till around 4:00 pm. During the time he was here we observed him nailing things up and taking it back down he had things going up and down all afternoon. We observed him tearing into some of the slats because the gate wasn’t fitting so he would hack off pieces or sand them or cut them with tools until he could cram it all together. We really tried to be patient with him but after seeing how he was “building a gate” we knew it was going to have to be re done by another gate and fence company. That night he came to my door and I greeted him and said “are you done?” And he said yes and handed me a couple of receipts that looked to me like receipts of two different jobs but I didn’t see that or notice it till after he left when I sat down to read them. At that time, before we checked to see if he had finished I asked for his payment information. He said he didn’t remember it. I told him to get back to me. We still at that time assumed he had fixed the errors and were through with the job to which he told me yes he was done We went out after he left to see our gate and both of us jaws dropped when we discovered what he did. First, he set one post about 6-7 inches from the side of the house and he used some pink looking foam that was a nasty mess. He should have set the pole closer to the house in cement. The other post that was broke he didn’t fix. He made the gate out of 2x4’s and pickets. It was very heavy and had no real support. He didn’t buy the proper size bolts and screws so he sawed off the bolts and left the trash on the yard along with other screws. Where he tried to screw things together he failed because he missed the wood. I should have known the way he answered if it were done but I trusted he would somehow figure the gate out I messaged him and told him he himself knew the gate wasn’t done right. It was a few pieces of heavy wood with no support that if it were used would fall apart. I told mike I was going to hire someone else to finish it and I would gladly pay mike for the supplies that could be salvaged from his mess. I have no desire to screw anyone over, mike included. He messaged me and says he wasn’t done and planned to come finish the next day. I asked why then did you tell me you were finished,, he had no answer Now, he is threatening me to come on my property and tear down my gate, which by the way we had fixed yesterday. I messaged mike and said he could come pick up the supplies that couldn’t be reused and I hAd a check for $130 for him. I deducted the price of the supplies that aren’t reused from the $175 price he gave us and he’s still threatening us. I did not charge him for the mess he made in my yard. I did not charge him for my grass area that he ripped up when he discovered he built the gate wrong and it drug on the ground. Mike has repeatedly threatened to come on our property. I have not contacted an attorney yet but I intend to. I’m going to get an estimate for the clean up and to replace my grass I encourage people that want to hire him to check him out better than we did. I think that because he is on Thumbtack and I assumed their people are screened already but apparently not By the way, the other guy that made our gate charged half of what mike was trying to cheat us out of So here it stands. Today, July 8 he’s sent me two messages so far threatening me by the way I have videos and lots of pics
