I needed to have a ceiling fan repaired. I went into thumbtack/affordable handyman and heard from Al Rotolo within 10 minutes. He was at my house shortly thereafter. He tried to fix the existing fan, which was 10+ years old, but it kept 'shorting out.' I then ordered a new fan online and Al went to Loews, picked it up and installed it. Al is very dependable and professional. I would highly recommend him and will definitely call him when I need an electrical handyman again.

I needed a handyman urgently to fix some terrible drywall repair work that was done by another company. They responded immediately to my request and were able to have someone at my house within 48 hours. They arrived on time at 7am in the morning, brought all of the necessary materials, explained exactly what they were going to do to fix the problem and worked very quickly. I will likely be going to Fixer for all of my handyman needs from now on. Highly recommended.

Jack responded quickly with a very fair estimate. He was very knowledgeable about hanging my marble shelf. And even though the shelf came with it’s own hardware, he brought better hardware that could support a heavier amount of weight. His attention to detail was beyond and I will definitely be hiring him again. I know it can personally feel very daunting to select a qualified handyman, but I would definitely recommend Jack if you’re in need.

Chano and work team are top notch! Chano was very detail oriented and took the time to explain each part of the work plan. He was open and honest about the cost of materials, and made sure we agreed to any additional work needed. A-Plus is a team that is genuinely interested in creating a quality product, but will try to keep the costs as low as possible. I think we all learned quite a bit about Benjamin Moore's new Natura Paint which was a little harder to apply, but looks great. We're very happy with the work performed by Chano and A-Plus!

Jason did a great job on several handyman projects for us. He was accommodating and knowledgeable. He didn’t bat an eye when I asked him to hang a square piece of art sideways like a diamond. I wasn’t sure it could be done, but he had it up perfectly in no time. He was also flexible when I asked him to rehang curtain rods that were a little low for what I wanted. He was here about 4 hours and hung a large heavy mirror, an over sized painting, art in diamond shape, smaller mirror, 2 shelves, 5 curtain rods and installed 6 cabinet pulls. Photos below. We would recommend Jason for all your handyman needs as long as he’s not back working fir us 😉

I hired Bundled to paint my place, do minor handyman work I am not capable of myself, and to clean my apartment after all the services. Bundled responded quickly to my request on thumbtack and provided a detailed quote for all the services. I live in a pretty large 2 bedroom, with 14 foot ceilings, it took them 3 days to finish all the work. They did a great job painting, and even had an interior designer to help pick out a color that would work well in my space. I also had them do some minor work like hang up shelves and my television. After all that was done they came in a cleaned, the girl did a great job, really got all that grease off my stove, which I can never seem to do myself. I am very happy with my service, and would highly recommend Bundled to anyone looking to get some work done on their home. I will definitely keep using them for cleaning, and again if I decided to do more work in my place.

Anselmo and Jake came to my home and assessed the situation. They then went out and purchased the supplies that were necessary to my particular installation. They were both very polite and knew what they were doing. They stayed late in order to help with me something else, and were extremely kind. I would definitely use them again.

We hired Lyndell to patch up some spots on our bathroom ceiling where paint was chipping and surface mold was growing. We had our entire bathroom remodeled a little over a year ago but come to find many corners were cut leaving us with small issues piling up. Lyndell was prompt to respond to our initial request. When my husband and I finally met Lyndell he was very thorough and extremely knowledgeable. He provided great details. Answered all our questions. Calmed my anxieties about our mounting bathroom problems. The work was quality and a great value. I wish we had hired Lyndell for our initial remodel. He has so much expertise. My husband and I would fully recommend him.

Chano rehung the shutters on my house. The last handyman hung them incorrectly and some had actually fallen off. Chano hung them in a very professional way and I am sure they will not come down until we want them to. He was very professional, on time, and cleaned up. I would definitely use him again.

He put together a vanity for me and hung two mirrors. One that was a full size mirror . He did a great job. He also hung some led lights in my kitchen. I recommend him to my father who also needed some work done. He mounted a 70 inch tv on the wall. He hid all the wires and from what my dad said he was very impressed with his work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
