I hired a mover to move 3 pieces of heavy wood desk. I received 3 bids and took the lowest (by 1/3). We agreed to start at 3pm on Saturday which was convenient and good. I was asked if he would be able to move it himself, I said it would probably take two people. This made the labor costs double but I was given the option of helping; which I took. I also opted to use their truck for an additional fee, but knowing what a truck rental costs it was not outrageous. The movers arrived at ten after 3 and I questioned why there were two; I was told the other guy was to help me move the furniture. After assessing and a little more prep work by him we (me and the other mover) carried the first two pieces up the stairs, and out to the “truck” ($19.95 uhaul van) no problem. The third piece had a drawer that couldn’t come out easily (empty) The lifting mover suggested rolling it up the stairs, while the hired mover suggested getting a dolly and pushing from the bottom. I agreed to help push. The desk fell off the dolly and took a chunk out of the top of the furniture. At this point we opted to roll the desk so no one got hurt. We drove to the new location and unloaded up one flight of stairs no problem. When I asked about the damage I was advised that it couldn’t be fixed and I should get door trim to put on the corner so it looked better (solid advice but not a great solution) When it came time for payment I inquired about cards and was told it was “cash or cash” luckily I had some. All in all, the furniture did get moved; I took stars away because I had to (chose to) help and it was damaged. I’m not really sure how long they have been doing this but this was not a great experience with moving companies. Next time I think I will opt to go with a company that has insurance and experience and just pay a little more. Possibly on a credit card. On a positive note; they were very friendly and we finished moving the pieces in under an hour (52m36s door to door to be exact).
