Do Better Contracting did right by me! The owner came out to replace my wooden front porch steps that had seen a better day. When he saw the problem he knew exactly what to do for me. He offered different solutions for new steps. I am very happy with the new steps I have now. I would easily hire again. Thank you.

Roman did a terrific job in rehabbing our front door and porch light. He was a good problem solver who consulted us on key decisions but worked efficiently once we had an agreed upon plan. The quality of his work was top notch. I will definitely consider hiring him again.

Dominic Ruggeri and his crew were an Amazingly Professional group of guys! Our home is 3,200/SqFt. My husband and I wanted to replace all the 1st&2nd Floor doors, casings, thresholds, baseboards, add crown molding throughout, tile and paint all ceilings, walls, new doors/casing, and baseboards. Needless to say we were extremely worried about finding the right contractor to handle all of these different projects at once. Mr. Ruggeri was on top of it right from the first meeting. It was a lot of work just to plan the order of operations but Mr Ruggeri made sure that everything was completed in order and on schedule. We are very pleased with the quality of work we received and the knowledge of this company and it’s employees. Thank you Dominic and we will see you in the spring for the Exterior. 5 stars!!!!!

John and his brother did several jobs for us. From a whole-house power wash to painting the small amount of paintable trim to reconditioning a well weathered treated wood deck surface, replacing some lattice trim and resurfacing a slick concrete front porch. John responded promptly (first) to our initial contact through Thumbtack(for the house wash). His bids were very reasonable and we soon expanded the scope of our work to include several other small jobs. All the work was done promptly, neatly and professionally. We look forward to using the Barrale brothers again.

Don came in after another contractor to complete a kitchen and enclosed porch project. I was very impressed with his professionalism and communication. Not only was he responsive, but he consistently followed though as expected. In addition, his pricing was very fair and he was conscious of properly managing my expectations. My house is approaching 100 years old and there have been some unique challenges and he is always focused on how he can solve the problem. I have liked working with him so much that I have added other projects (i.e. garage door replacement) and referred him to two friends/neighbors who are both currently working with him. Already thinking of what projects I will have him tackle next year!

Eagle Exteriors did a wonderful job for us! Our screened in porch was in desperate shape, with rotting wood, uneven ceiling, and sagging screens. Eagle basically rebuilt the porch for us. Not only did they do excellent work, but Keith also had some great design ideas! He suggested using bead board to partially enclose the lower half, (both inside and out) which turned out really pretty. When the project was finished, he painted the whole porch. The result was like adding a whole new room to the house! A beautiful, sturdy, well made room! The whole project finished in about 3 weeks, which is hard to believe. Keith was friendly, helpful, prompt, and clean. He has a true can-do attitude. Do yourself a big favor and hire Eagle Exteriors for your home!

Awesome experience! Vincent responded to my request right away and was at my house power washing the very next day (I live in Mobile and he came all the way from Pensacola). He did a great job and was very nice and professional. The front and sides of my house look brand new as well as my porch. Couldn't be more pleased with service. Will definitely recommend to friends and use him in the future!! Thank you so much for such a great experience!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
