FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I am actually a CPA, but working as an accountant was always very stressful. When my son was diagnosed with Diabetes, I decided I needed to do something that would allow me to have a flexible schedule, but also allow me to have a clear head so that I could focus on all the things I needed to learn about caring for him. A friend suggested I start a pet sitting business, since she knew how much I loved dogs...and the rest is history. I can't imagine doing anything else, and feel I found my calling in life. I absolutely love what I do, now.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
My week days are spent going from house to house, walking dogs, or taking them out in the yard for a potty break/playtime, while their owners are at work. In addition to my "regulars", I also usually have a few customers on vacation, so I visit those homes as well, usually 3-4 times per day, for potty breaks, walks, feedings, etc. I also care for cats, who usually require just one visit per day, for feeding, litter box cleaning, and TLC. When people are on vacation, I also get their mail daily, as well as take the trash out on garbage day, if they want. And with all visits, whether someone on vacation or just at work for the day, if I notice any packages at the front door, I always bring them in the house.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Dogs are a good judge of character, so when meeting with a potential pet sitter, watch how your dog acts around them...and watch how they interact with your dog. Also, I would suggest asking for, and actually calling, references. You want to know that you are hiring someone you can trust with your pet and in your home.
