Selected this firm as my preferred agent, had a call discussing all our requirements. Was told I would receive an engagement letter shortly and then nothing. Zero response from accountant or receptionist. Deathly silence and a week wasted before moving on to another provider. Don't waste your time with this firm

J&R accounting did my 2015 taxes and I was very impressed. Shiamal worked with me for over an hour asking me questions about taxes, possible donations, work related deductibles and anything else tax related. When I walked in I was greeted right away by the staff and was even offered water or coffee. Professional, kind, courteous and I felt extremely comfortable. Taxes were done, refund I received and the price to do my taxes was very reasonable. Thanks J&R.

Tom has been handling all of our tax work since 1992, from monthly sales tax filings to a full scale IRS audit. He was with me while an IRS examiner spent two and a half days at our office, answering questions and providing backup material. All ended well as Tom said it would, because our returns were done properly, and all supporting documentation was available. We have been happy with the Hodge Group for over 20 years, and use them for everything for our bookkeeping, accounting, and tax prep. Two thumbs up!!!!

James did an amazing job helping me with my 2017 Tax Return. I had a very complicated year when it came to reporting income and James handled it like a true professional. He made sure my reporting was accurate while identifying all possible deductions. I would highly recommend James for your Small Business or Personal needs.

Niky is super efficient, she prepared the tax return for our LLC promptly and right on time, even though the deadline was really tight. I'm planning to hire her again for my personal tax returns. Highly recommendable.

This is my second year filing with Larry. He clearly outlines what you need to do, he'll meet with you to talk through it or you can just email him everything. I preferred meeting in-person because I didn't understand a few requirements around my rental property. Turns out I wasn't accounting for some of my costs and he figured out why I should get back additional money. He also found a mistake in my 2014 tax return (done by somebody else) and is re-filing that return for me.

A blessed business owner and taxpayer due to G&G Income Tax! I have been working with the firm for the last three years and I appreciate everything that Gery has done for me for the past 3 years! I file my business returns, as well as my quarterly estimate taxes, and my personal taxes with G&G Income Tax. I have been thinking about whether to outsource the payroll vs doing it myself, and I may do it next year depending on how busy I am . My business has been growing and Gery has been a fantastic resource in terms of advise and coaching on how to grow my business and stay compliant. She gives me a list of deductions and expenses that I can take advantage of given my business line while staying compliant with the IRS. A grateful thank you and I look forward to working you again!

Sean did an excellent job on my 2016 tax return. He is the best accountant I've worked with so far. I've been struggling to decide use CPA or Turbotax for my tax return. But after Sean did my tax return, I made up my mind that I will be going to him for my tax return going forward. He saved me a lot of money compare to Turbotax. He is also very detail oriented and patient. The whole process is very pleasant, it only took him 2 days to get my tax done. I've already asked him to take a look at my tax return of previous year and recommended him to my friends.

We met Steve at a DuPage County networking event and was impressed by his professionalism. Steve has been guiding us for the past three years as our accountant and bookkeeper. His knowledge and attention to detail has helped make my company aware of any tax savings and programs that benefit us. He is proactive by emailing his clients how changes in the tax plans will affect our business. We consult with Steve before we make any major changes in our business. If he doesn’t know the answer he will research and find out what we need to know. I feel confident in recommending Steve’s accounting services. He is not only thorough, but also easy to work with and always willing to take the time to discuss any concerns my business partner and I have. He is quick to respond to our questions and provide us with answers we understand.

Marc gave me a very useful consult that solved many of my issues. While I do not have a need for a full time accountant at this time, I do plan to utilize Marc's expertise from time to time to address specific questions that will inevitably arise in my small business. Marc was professional, un-rushed and was able to provide thoughtful responses to my questions. Highly recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
