Fred came into my world when our home was caught in a deluge, a freaky storm tore up our roof and flooded our lower level. What a mess! Our whole family was forced to leave the home while the scavengers pulled out the entire lower level to include heating and air conditioning, washer/dryer machines and so much more. Fred was the only contractor of over twenty that we had to deal with who understood the pressure we were under. He took his time to explain everything we needed to have done with him and how he was going to do it. We so appreciated his manner and the work was done as specified. Since then, have moved away from Illinois and wish the contractors here were as sincere as Fred.

After noticing a leak in our skylight, I contacted Thumbtack I received several call and texts within minutes. After reviewing all the contractors I chose Loyola Roofing, his prices were comparable to the others and unlike the others, he offered a 3 year warranty on the repair. Philip, the owner of the company, arrived within hours of the call. He surveyed the roof and found the problem. While on the roof he also found several missing shingles and some other minor problems. He offered to make the skylight repair for the agreed amount but offered to repair the damage to the entire roof and replace the missing shingles at a very reasonable price. With this, he also offered the 3 year warranty on the entire roof. Due to his repair and warranty I will not have to replace the entire roof like I thought I would for several more years. Phillip from Loyola is also a general contractor and due to his professionalism, quality of work and cost we are talking about him doing several more projects on my residence. I would definitely recommend him.

We hired Tom to finish our basement. It’s been a project on our to do list since we bought the house couple years ago. We met with a number of people/companies to get ideas and quotes. With the size of the project (2000 sq ft), we wanted to make sure we give it to the right company, having burnt by many past experiences dealing with contractors. When we met Tom, we knew right away he was the right guy. Tom completed the basement yesterday, and we couldn’t have been more satisfied. The basement looks great, and the attention to quality and perfection is astounding. Tom and his men are the most reliable people I have worked with. Showed up at 8am 6 days of the week for 30 days. Tom puts his heart into the job and we developed a very personal relationship with him. Highly recommend Tom for any project. He also engineered a solution for another structural problem that we had in the house during the time he was working the basement. Can’t say enough good things about him.

We hired LoProstis to assist with a water heater issue in our home. Brian, from LoProstis, called us right away for an initial consultation over the phone, and within an hour, he arrived at our house to explain what went wrong and the course of action needed to repair the water heater. We appreciated his honesty and the accuracy of his quote in order to fix the issue, but more importantly, we appreciated the education that came along with it. Not only did Brian install a new water heater in our home; he also help us to select a reputable brand, based on his recommendation and hauled away the old water heater. He did not compromise on his professionalism to charge a higher fee (given the fact it was a weekend and one of the coldest day of the year), nor use that as an opportunity for a surcharge. It's very rear to find an honest contractor and who's willing to do the right thing, and Brian has both. He exceeded our expectations and got up and running within hours. We would definitely hire Brian again. Thank you for your hard work and excellent service, Brian.

We had a front step that had worn away to wood and rotted. It was a simple job that no one seemed to want. So we put it off for many years, and the few contractors that came out took one look at our house and charged through the roof! I finally discovered Thumbtack and Ruslan came out and did an amazing job for the price. Very thorough and an incredible warranty! He even photographed his progress and emailed me pictures so I wouldn't have to assume he did a complete job. We will definitely use his services in the future!

Stayed home from work as I expected him. Calls me 30 mins to an hour before expected arrival and says he can’t come until next week. Need this to be done ASAP and now have to start all over with new contractors. Not happy primarily because I stayed home from work to accommodate his arrival.

Mark is a very nice guy to work with. He spent time to discuss with us for our project—built a patio and plant trees for our new home starting from scratch. He understood what we need and made an authentic and professional proposal in 1 week. Though the project has been prolonged for some time because of the weather and busy schedule of his team, the work has been completed beautifully in July! I know Mark has got long-term customers because they trust him, I will also hire him next time for second or third stage of yard and garden building.

Pedroza's Landscaping is fantastic. Within a couple hours of our request for service, Pedroza's arrived and did an excellent job of mowing and trimming our lawn. We were so impressed that we asked that day for a quote for spring clean-up and landscaping. Jose gave us a quote that day and completed the job the next week. The result: our lawn and landscaping are beautiful! All weeds were cleared, bushes and trees trimmed, lawn mowed, and mulch laid. We recommend Pedroza's and will definitely be using their services again!

We had a couple of leaks inside of our house due to some bad workmanship from the contractors that flipped our house and installed the roof. Pete and Nick came out in a timely manner, very professional, great responsiveness. They came out and made the necessary repairs and i'm very happy we went with them.

I am a General Contractor in the Chicagoland area and I have been using Mariusz of Excellent Painting Inc as my sub contractor for the past few years for all my painting and decking jobs. Mariusz is simply fantastic! He is knowledgeable, professional, and most of all he is punctual. Every customer of mine that he has done work for has had nothing but glowing reviews about his work and more importantly his character. Mariusz continues to do work for me to this day. If you are looking for quality, call Excellent Painting. You will not be disappointed. Rey

Refreshing to work with a contractor who (a) wants to work, and works hard, and is flexible and (b) is focused on the customer, and solving the customers problems. Accommodated my schedule, worked weekends, advised well, was flexible and adaptable, did good work at good price.

Donnell and his team were some of the best professionals I have ever dealt with when it comes to contracting. Not only did they let you know the progress every step of the way but they made sure you were completely happy with the results. They were professional and did highly quality work on my basement. It went from looking like a dungeon to a beautiful space. They also did something that I see very few contractors do and that is clean up after themselves each time they were here instead of just waiting until after the job was done. It was nice to go to the basement everyday and be able to move around because they have cleaned everything well. That is super convenient and great since we are still living here while the work is being done. I would recommend them in a second for not only any future work for myself but for others. It's quality and professionalism at a great price --Ernst Quinnton Lamothe Jr.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
