After a very bitter experience with one another pro in thumbtack we were very hesitant to hire him. But seeing all the reviews we went with him. We are now very happy we did hire him because he did a wonderful job and completed the job on time a promised. He didn’t make any false promises and did everything what we agreed upon. That too in a nominal price. We would definitely call him back for any landscaping work and would recommend him to our friends too.

I first hired Irreco to mow my lawn. I then consulted them for landscaping and they gave me a quote that is a great value for the work they are going to complete. I am very happy with them.

This company ran by a 21 year man is one of the best landscaping companies I’ve ever worked with, SERIOUSLY! I don’t have sell this to anyone, all you have to do is call Casden, (owner) and see for yourself! This kid and his crew are no joke! If he says it he does it, without fail and the guys that work for him, well, they’re the best! Thanks again Casden; Zack was right, you are good, real good! The wife LOVES IT! Sorry for no pictures, it was late and dark.

Chris installed our landscaping at our new house. We had no idea what we wanted, but Chris had great ideas and drew up a design that we really liked. None of the other contractors we talked with offered any real suggestions about what would look good. Chris and his team did a great job on the installation as well. They finished the project in good time and everything has held up great over the last few months. We would definitely recommend Chris.

Job: Grading and Sod Installation Dan is a very knowledgeable professional with a strong work ethic. My project required grading a complex area followed by laying sod. A French drain was also included. His price for this work was fair and completed within schedule. His work knowledge goes well beyond the work he completed for me and would highly recommend Dan for any landscaping work you might have.

Reynaldo and Manuel did an excellent job for us and we plan to engage their services again. They were very anxious to start work and were looking for other items they could do around our home. Not only do they do concrete work, but they are very good at landscaping services, too. I rated them a 3 out of 5 on communication only because English is not their primary language. They take great care to make sure they are doing what was requested. They put in a small concrete pad for our trash container and it was done very well. We have several other places that can use some concrete work and will engage them for that. They also work with tile.

Craig has done several different types of jobs for us, ranging from traditional lawn mowing to leaf blowing in the fall and landscaping a new flower bed for us. He always listened to our requests and followed through in a timely manner with an acceptable price tag. We have ALWAYS been happy with the completed work and would gladly recommend him to anyone.

After two weeks of rain on the weekends I was desperate to have our lawn mowed. I searched on Thumbtack and found Landscape Care. They were available within 2 days of my contact (thank goodness)! And they immediately responded to all communications (response in less than 2 hours). Our lawn looks great. I've been pleased from start to finish!

HAROLD Atteberry arrived with his team around 10:30 a.m. By 4 p.m., the work was done. Where there had been a tangle of weeds, there is an orderly planting of neat shrubs and blooming varieties. The old edging was replaced with a neat border of wide bricks and the spaces are filled with the small rock I asked for. I had both Atteberry Landscaping and a popular local landscape company both draw up plans and estmate the cost. Mr. ATTEBERRY's plans were equally as good as the other company's designer's. But ATTEBERRY's estimate for basically the same amount of work and similar plants was LESS than HALF of the competing landscaper's estimate. I am recommending Atteberry Landscaping to all my neighbors and relatives.

Alfredo was very responsive, squeezing us into his crew's weekend schedule on short notice to mow the lawn at the house we recently purchased and now occupy. He kept us informed of his arrival time, and his crew worked very quickly and efficiently as a team including trimming and blowing the trimmings. We would hire Rios Landscaping again for residential lawn mowing.

Douglas and Brian are very conscientious and went above and beyond to meet our needs for safe stairs down a slope in our yard. The end result looks great. They planted all my selections and even said they'd be back to check on the health of the plants. I'll call them again for landscaping in the back yard.

They bid the job promptly and came to perform the work as needed. Very sociable and educated in landscaping. I paid them early and they finished the job in a timely manner. I think they did the best job they could do. I have other jobs that I am keeping them in mind for given their excellent service.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
