"She’s really good with meal plans. She makes you feel comfortable, but at the same time motivates you to work hard during training! Her plans for your workouts are made according to your ability and increase at your own pace. Great training time options as well. She trains you hard, but also make sure of your safety and injuries free! She knows a varieties of excercises, so you would never get bored of the samething every session. "I have had such a wonderful experience training with Unicus Fitness. I am an amateur aerialist and I came here after a shoulder injury to try to build my strength back up. (I couldn't even open a door with the injured arm for almost a month after the injury.) I knew that if I kept going on my own the way I was it was only a matter of time before I injured myself again so I went looking for a trainer. I originally picked the place because it was close to work and had good reviews, but Frank's depth of knowledge and experience is astounding. I have learned so much about how my body works, how to push myself without hurting myself and all sorts of exercises I never would have known about if I hadn't come here. He customized my workouts to my specific needs and now I'm back in the air, swinging around with confidence. The gym itself has plenty of space and more fitness equipment than I've seen in one place outside a commercial warehouse store. The workouts are a little different each time as well, you will definitely not be bored. I've recommended this place to several people, the things I have learned here have been invaluable to me, not only just for my general fitness and health but also for my quest to avoid more injury. If you choose Unicus, you will not be disappointed in the results, I highly recommend it."

"I met Jenny about 7-8 months ago when she joined the HIIT training gym I had recently joined. Jenny has amazing knowledge about everything when it comes to working out & nutrition. I was VERY intimidated trying HIIT training but Jenny makes you feel comfortable while also pushing you to jump the next hurdle in your fitness journey. And she listens!! Sometimes I push myself too much all week & I at walk into my last class of the week and ask to just concentrate on my trouble areas and we DO!! I've gone from a size 12 to size 4/6 in less than 9 months- she's the best!!"

"I met Ro through a mutual friend a few years ago. I have been a triathlete for about five years but, the past two years I have given up running and focused more on cycling and swimming. Between teaching a spin class, swimming 3 miles a week, and biking 80 plus miles a week I noticed I just wasn’t recovering fast enough from all the exercise. I sat down with Ro for a one on one consultation. Ro dissected my entire nutrition habits. She took in account for everything I ate from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed, Monday through Sunday. After her analysis of the results she noticed my carb intake was much higher than my protein intake . She introduced me to some foods I never thought I would ever eat like quinoa and tofu. She took my food list and substituted these items for some of the carbs I could take out of my diet. Thanks to Ro I feel my recovery time has been shortened and I can expedite my recovery time. Ro checks in with me on a monthly basis to make sure I’m still on pace. If it wasn’t for this help from Ro I would still be scratching my head searching the Internet for what I’m doing wrong. "I was doing high intensity interval training, which caused serious injuries to my knee and shoulder, so I wanted to get back into full body resistance training and cardio. After reading reviews, I chose Dan. It has been a wonderful ride ever since. He's very smart, thoughtful, and incredibly enthusiastic. He spends a great deal of time tracking your numbers so that there is genuine accountability as to the extent of your progress. After I saw the orthopedist about my shoulder and went to physical therapy, Dan took the recommended physical therapy exercises and integrated them directly into my workouts. Very creative; very cool. He's easy to communicate by text or email, and incredibly responsive. He's also very knowledgeable about the Chicago performing arts scene, which I enjoy discussing with him. Bottom line: I'm getting stronger; feeling more fit and confident; and not getting injured. Dan's been great."

"When I met the owner, Rob.. I was welcomed into the facility with a fair wealth of knowledge, and clear explanation of the possible results his gym has to offer. His facility has a "one on one" feel and does not replicate the crowded conditions you find at large corporate fitness centers. Since several sessions, not only have I increased my capacity to do more difficult tasks, I've found myself returning to more physical upkeep at my home and motivated to do so. All in all, I believe the recipe of routines Rob presented, in short order have improved range of motion and flexibility which is where I was struggling. I'll be returning to Going for Greatness for what I feel was an exclusive opportunity."

"I had always been a fit person who ran, biked, lifted weights and in general stayed healthy and active. After the birth of my 3rd child I found myself with less time than ever running a family and my own small business and the baby weight was just not coming off in the minimal time I had to devote to my fitness in the chaos of life. I hired Jeanne Penton to help me get 3 hours of workout out of an hour of time and found out how much I did not know about training. Jeanne was supportive, encouraging, compassionate, and firm when I needed it. Her coaching led me to achieve my goals and continue to learn even more to help me live the most balanced and centered life possible, in spite of the chaos of life. "Earlier this year I contacted Linda to discuss my need to improve my strength and overall fitness. By babying my bad knees for years I was in a position where my legs were very weak, I was overweight and my overall muscle tone was poor. Linda mapped out a nutrition plan and starting training me right away. I expected myself to fail since I had not exercised in 35 years! With Linda’s thoughtful and careful guidance I was able to gain confidence and ability each week. Within the first 6 weeks I was walking noticeably better and didn’t rely on Aleve to get me thru the day! For me thats amazing on its own! I can again walk up stairs two at a time, even with my bad knees! (Both are overdue for replacement!) Linda works with you to gain strength and balance and she teaches you on how to perfect your form, which is so important in exercise! Linda is an amazing personal trainer who is truly invested in helping you attain your fitness goals. We are currently working on an intensive “pre-hab” for my upcoming knee replacement. My orthopedic surgeon is totally impressed with my physical conditioning and weight loss achievements so far. He put together a simple, yet challenging program to correct my imbalances, build my weaknesses, and reach my platform goals. Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a type of martial art whose basic moves are widely practiced in personal and group fitness regimens. In combat kickboxing, two competitors fight using four points of contact — both hands and both feet — unlike traditional boxing, where competitors are allowed to use their hands.
