We had Julio's landscaping build a retaining paver wall using Unilock pavers. They did an excellent job, prompt, professional and clean. The crew was very attentive to how we wanted the shape of the wall. We would recommend Julio's landscape services to anyone looking for quality workmanship at an affordable price. Thank you for your hard work, Joe & Julia Lombard, IL

Great Company to work with. I have had several landscaping companies over the years and working with Salgado Landscape & Tree Service has been the best to work with by far.

Contracted Whitetail Landscapes to dethatch and aerate my front and back yards. Kyle was responsive and provided a reasonable quote, kept in contact prior to the day of work, and he and his crew were friendly, professional, informative and completed the job earlier than expected. I would recommend Whitetail Landscapes to friends, and will likely use them for future landscaping needs.

Roberto did a great job on a really hot day. He took the plants I bought and planted them, put down the landscape mesh and spread the mulch. He knows about the plants and advised me how to take care of them for the next couple weeks.

I loved the fact they were 2 hardworking college entrepreneurs. They were professional, on time, communicative and eager to please. Their cost was the best out there. They also perform other jobs such as moving and landscaping. I would recommend them to all out there and would not hesitate to call upon them again.

I worked with Rodolfo. He came on time for the quote. We agreed to a fare price for the work. He and his crew arrived on time the day of service and did an excellent job. My services involved fall clean up which consisted of a gutter clean, leaf and garden bed cleanup, mow and edging of lawn.

Outstanding job done by Diverse Services! David design a beautiful Landscape Design, he included awesome shrubs and annuals that will finally give my 3000 sqbft yard life. I was impressed of how quickly and neatly I received my quote. We definitely choose him because of his knowledge and also his professionalism and not to mention that they are always happy. So far my back yard has been cleaned of all debris, a lot of debris. They laid soil and graded my yard to move water way. They also redid my entire patio, which was done last year by another company :(. So far we are very impressed with work. This project will definitely need a second review to add to the 10 star service. Next step is to lay sod and plant my entire yard line with Shrubs. Thanks DiverseTeam..

These guys are the hardest working landscapers I’ve employed. They know what they’re doing, they don’t rush things and they do a very good job. So far they have completed the Spring cleanup, edges about 1/2 acre of trees and flowerbeds, as well as deliver & install some high quality mulch.

Pedroza's Landscaping is fantastic. Within a couple hours of our request for service, Pedroza's arrived and did an excellent job of mowing and trimming our lawn. We were so impressed that we asked that day for a quote for spring clean-up and landscaping. Jose gave us a quote that day and completed the job the next week. The result: our lawn and landscaping are beautiful! All weeds were cleared, bushes and trees trimmed, lawn mowed, and mulch laid. We recommend Pedroza's and will definitely be using their services again!

My experience at the very beginning with Pro was very professional!!! I was looking for someone who knew how to installed low voltage landscape lights, to go around my entire house and to install a low voltage light post for my front yard. Pro responded to my Thumbtack request with the kindness words... "I would love to help you with your request". So I made an appointment, he came out very prepared to show me various lights to choose from and a layout for ideas. He also shared information of where I can go to see others, and during the wait process I will text him to ask what he thought about certain brand of lights and transformers, I truly loved his knowledge and experience. Pro and his team came out to installed the lights and also I hired him to clean up last season of debri, with fresh edgeing and new mulch, him and his team did an awesome job with Everything! I am a very happy and satisfy customer, Pro's work exceeding my expectation and he truly brought my vision to life and I would recommend him to anyone. Also my neighbor told me my house looks light a model home and now Pro may be working with him. Hire Pro for any landscape work and you would not be disappointed!😍

I was very happy about my experience with Gonzalez Landscaping. They are hard working people with excellent work ethics. They showed up on my property early in the morning, just as they promised they would. They started their job with good planning. Things went nice and smooth. They cut down four trees, chopped up the wood in firewood size, laid them neatly by the fence, hauled branches away, and even cleaned up the yard for me. Everything was finished in 2 or 3 hours. No damage, no mess. Four people coordinated very well, because they know what they are doing. I highly recommend Gonzalez and will use them again.

Joni Pawlek of My Secret Garden redesigned my garden, and landscaped my back yard. She had great ideas, incorporating my ideas, and improving on them. The flowers she brought were beautiful, and healthy...they were thoughtfully placed in areas perfect for them in appearance, and based on their needs. After she finished with the back, I had her redesign the front of the house. Joni was a pleasure to work with. Pleasant, professional, and prompt. It was a good experience for us, and we will continue to give her our landscaping business.

We took a chance and used Thumbtack to identify a business to help with our yard work. It was a great decision. Mr. Mendoza of Yuritzy contacted us minutes after we submitted the request although it was late Sunday evening, and came out the next day as scheduled to survey our property and prepare an estimate. He was professional and offered options and ideas for landscape, plants, shrubs, etc. We received a written estimate/contract a few days later outlining in detail the work to be done. This past Saturday (5/5) the initial work began and we couldn't be more pleased. We look forward to working with Yuritzy this year and in years to come. We are expecting more of the great service

These guys were amazing. The work they did was top notch and much more affordable than other companies on Thumbtack. Our backyard beds were an absolute disaster. We gave them our vision and they made it happen...and they went above and beyond by doing some extra work they thought would look good. We are extremely pleased with our final product and would absolutely recommend this company to anyone looking to do some landscaping!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
