Ron Kwaak did excellent work: he had a professional estimate and contract, he remained fully in-budget and on-schedule, he communicated very, very well, and was patient with my multiple requests (as an engineer, I like to ask a lot of questions and understand how things work). Ron is expert-level with plumbing, electrical, drywall, carpentry, and likely many other trades and skills. I selected him for the work since he was multi-skilled, hands-on, and could do all the work himself. He also had a team of additional people he brought in when two-person heavy-lifting was needed, and his people were just as pleasant and skilled. While working with me, Ron completed a very complex bathroom installation (which included many small parts and the manufacturer’s elaborate instruction manual). This work required a lot of know-how, skill, and judgment, in order to move around structures, plumbing, electrical, and to install the new fixtures. Ron truly did a top-notch job. Ron also left my home just as clean as it was when he started, and took great care of all areas in my home. I look forward to working with Ron in the future, and certainly recommend him to my friends, family, and work colleagues. I am 100% satisfied and impressed with the quality of his work, and will use him for all my home improvement needs in the future. Ron was a complete pleasure to work with, thanks Ron!

I worked with Michael at Murray Millwork. Customer Service was the best, and the crew that replaced my windows were timely, polite, and provide quality workmanship which is very hard to find now days. During the window replacement process, the crew was very concerned about keeping my home clean, and did a great job cleaning up upon completion. Yes, I will call Michael for any of my home repair/ remodeling needs in the future because I know the quality and satisfaction is their main concern.

We had Joe and his crew complete our job including siding, a new door opening, new windows, new trim, and replacement of damaged studs. Joe gave us an estimate for the job and was within $500. on the final bill. He communicated well with us throughout the process and if anything came up he promptly informed us and asked for our input. Joe was on the job site EVERY day they worked and managed his workers in a professional manner. Joe's crew was outstanding. Professional and very respectful! They were on time to the job site and worked full days. We were informed anytime there was a schedule change - which was not often. They cleaned up our location every night before they left. They were respectful of the neighbors (no loud music or cursing). All were very trustworthy! The work done was outstanding. Repairs done were quality and cost effective. We will be using Joe again to build columns inside our home and to assist us with building out the patio and sidewalk. He and his crew listened to our ideas, were willing to discuss them and then follow-through on decisions made. We highly recommend Joe and his crew!! Sincerely, Charlie and Tammy

Raul is wonderful. I hired him to remove a large built-in millwork unit in a client's home, and he completed the job quickly and at a very reasonable price. I'm glad I've been connected with Raul, as he has already assisted with more handy-man tasks for the same client (installing light fixtures, hanging curtain hardware and art, and disassembly / removal of old furniture to dispose). He has a very helpful attitude and is a hard worker - I plan on working with Raul for other clients moving forward.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
