When I first acquired my condo, I knew I had a lot of work in store for me. As a first-time homeowner, and moreover a bachelor with a unique vision for his condo, I struggled to come up with a plan for how I would execute the radical transformation I needed to make. In the beginning, my condo was more fitting of an old couple’s abode of respite. However, I sought to transform it into a modern bachelor pad with a home theater presiding over it. I did my research and recruited 1816zenden to help re-design my home because I liked their website and their philosophy behind designing a home. I first met Roopa from 1816zenden at my building. She came over, did the necessary measurements and I told her of the various constraints I had in terms of the design. I wanted to have a large projection screen, front and center in my living room with a projector mounted in the bedroom. She was extremely understanding of my needs and listened to me although I felt like a madman speaking about what I was planning on doing with my condo. Shortly thereafter, Roopa e-mailed me her designs for my place and I was extremely pleased with the layout. She offered to help with the execution of the design and given the allotted budget, we struck a deal that she would take care of the more important parts of the project and I would complete the rest when I get the opportunity. She was able to find great deals for many of the important aspects of the project, most notably for redoing the granite countertops in my kitchen and bathroom. I’ve been living in my condo for the past 6 months now, and I am extremely pleased with how it turned out. I’ve had friends over and they have all been extremely impressed with the place. I would highly recommend Roopa for designing the layout of a home and executing the necessary design choices. I found her prices to be reasonable and I have the highest opinion of her as a professional. -A.S.

Stephanie is one of the most insightful interior decorators, I have ever met. She has a knack of selecting just the right items that are bold but not outlandish. She brings a distinctive look to every room while maintaining a warm, natural feel that delivers enjoyment in a home or even an office. I am truly amazed at her attention to detail and the completeness she brings to every project.

Designs from A to V installed new flooring in my condo a month ago, and I can't overemphasize how professional; skilled and -- most of all -- fast they are! I work from home, so being displaced while the floors were replaced was extremely important to me. They promised to finish the job in a week; and it was done in 7 days. I've *never* had that happen with a contractor. Their prices are reasonable, and their work really is fantastic. They exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend them!

Caryn is perfect! My parents worked with an interior designer when I was growing up, and I remember she would always push really fancy expensive furniture on them, so I was hesitant to hire someone when we bought our new home. Caryn understands that we are DIY people, and works with that, and our budget, in mind. She doesn't overcharge, and we got SO much done in our one-hour consult with her. She picked out paint colors for the whole house and I LOVE them. I would have spend hours agonizing over it had I picked them out myself. Worth every penny! I can't wait to use her over the years to design our home!

I hired Variant to help me with branding and the interior remodel of my coffee shop. It was my first time hiring an interior designer so I wasn't sure what to expect but they were great to work with and the renovation looks beautiful. I could not have asked for a better experience or outcome. I would refer them to anyone looking to renovate their business or home.

Deb has helped me successfully several times. We sold our house in 2 weeks with her help on home staging. She made great suggestions on simplifying; moving furniture, pictures, decorations around for better appearance; paint color, etc. She also helped us with our full bathroom remodel. She chose the tile, listelle, which way to run the tile on floor and in shower, grout color, pencil trim. It looks beautiful. Never could have done this myself. She has also helped with placement of furniture. She knows how to use a room to it's fullest potential. She has helped with all the design choices for our new home. From brick color to lighting fixtures to flooring to granite to shingles.... She has an eye for color, knows what is trending, what to stay away from. She is a delight to work with and knows her stuff. I highly recommend Deb Bly.

We first worked with Renae for Christmas decorating for our restaurant. We received so many compliments on the decorations that we asked her for advice on how to improve the existing design. She gave us insightful feedback and recommendations that wouldn't cost a lot. All the changes were so positive that we used her to fully design our new restaurant dining room. She is very creative with ways to design very affordably and respected our budget.

Our experience with Lauren Marshall Interiors was terrific. We worked with Lauren on the renovation (gut job) of a bathroom in our 100 year old home. Because the size of the bathroom is small, it was important to choose appropriate materials and fixtures that modernized the bathroom without compromising the integrity of an older home. Lauren was able to design the space and work within our budget to achieve those two objectives. She provided great visualizations and walked us through the project. Although she had a vision, she was receptive to my input. She delivered all design specifications on time and within budget. She did not rush me to make decisions and gave me lots of options for materials. Lauren communicated well and often to ensure the project was progressing as planned. Additionally, Lauren was punctual to all meetings both at our home and showrooms. Lauren is a wonderful designer with a terrific eye for detail. I highly recommend Lauren Marshall Interiors for any and all home projects, whether a gut kitchen or bathroom job, or giving a room a fresh new look.

Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

I was planning an addition to my home. I had no clue as to how complicated it could be. Between permits, the zoning requirements and not to mention the contractor problems that could have occurred. I was referred to Illusione Design by a friend. He said they did a great job for him and know I know why. Mr. Quintero and his team lead me through the whole project with professional advise and a level of experience and professionalism I have not experienced in a long time. What I now know could have been a really trying situation, went off without a hitch. The plans were done in no time and as far as knowing your way around city hall and all the codes. These guys really blew my mind. So yes. if you're planning any type of project, I think you would be smart to give them a call. I'm sure you will be pleased with the services they provide.

I hired Angela from Elegance by Design as my interior designer and it was a great decision. Angela is not only a designer but can be your general contractor or you can use your own contractor and hire her as a designer and she can also project manage your contractor so you aren’t stuck dealing with every detail. She’s very thorough and passionate about design. As a homeowner you’re emotionally tied to certain things or how you think things should be, however she take a holistic design approach and looks at the space you want to design and gives you ideas of what things can look like based on your style and what would appeal to others if you were to ever sell in the future. She’s detailed oriented and a perfectionist. She gave me an idea to cut a piece of drywall in the bathroom that added minimal cost but added much more return to the value of my bathroom having a fireplace which you usually don’t see in homes which I’ll get back if I sell this home. She also helps you pick up material and has saved me money and chosen the right material like lights and tile which I was going to pay a lot more for. Never using a designer I didn’t know what to expect and now having one I know that any remodeling I will do I will use a designer more specifically Angela from Elegance by Design.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
