We had a last minute need for a carpenter and dupage home services really came through. Not only was their carpenter able to come out on a Saturday morning, but he did an excellent job as well. And to top it off, the work came in under quote so they even shaved $125 off the bill. I would recommend them for any home repair job you may have. Outstanding!

Andy and the team were flawless in their execution. I threw them a couple of curveballs with regard to mounting a speaker and also asked they tighten up some areas of the existing cabinetry (not under the contract). They handled it all with no exceptions. New cabinet fits perfectly and matches all of the other cabinets. I will b hiring Andy and VAC in the future as they really are craftsmen.

I can't say enough good things about my experience working with Master Craft and Design. My husband and I moved into our home 3 years ago and have worked with our fair share of carpenters, and handy men. I'm not easy to please and none of them made me want to work with them again in the future. However, our experience with Eddie and his team has been the opposite. Eddie came to give us a quote and was patient and enthusiastic. He gave us an opportunity to tell him what we wanted, but he still offered details and direction towards ways to get creative. We loved that! He took our budget well into consideration and we hired him immediately. Once he started working, we were even further impressed. We worked with Eddie for about a month and the ENTIRE TIME he was on time, flexible, energetic, friendly, patient and approachable. He would check in with us constantly as the work progressed, and didn't get frustrated once if we needed something fixed or if he had to make another trip to home depot! He also threw in many little freebies along the way. Eddie and his crew were sweet and trustworthy, We have dogs and small children and they never made us feel that we were in their way or bothersome. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Our house was nice before but now it has that "wow factor". We kept adding ideas as the time went on and he was able to balance it all (along with other jobs and offers) and get it done in a timely manner. We received wainscoting through most of our main areas, including accent walls on our stairway, crown throughout the house and a complete fireplace demo and remodel with built in shelving and a new mantle. GORGEOUS, it's all so bold and classic. The house feels more cohesive now. I would be happy to show pictures of my home or offer more information about Master Craft in the future. They did an excellent job. Eddie is our go-to from here on out!

Pepe arrived on time. He assessed our garage service door and we decided that purchasing a new door was the way to go. He worked diligently and meticulously on every aspect of the installation. Pepe was patient answering our questions and concerns. He cleaned up the area without our asking him to do so. Overall we were very pleased with our experience and highly recommend Pepe as a carpenter/door installer. Thank you Pepe!

I worked with Zurek Construction on my kitchen remodel--Matthew and Wojciech--and they were outstanding! I have an old house with sloping floors and odd angles, and they were able to custom cut moldings and shelves to work with my unique space. They also worked with me to fit in cabinets that I had purchased myself, and to come up with a good, working design for the kitchen. They were punctual, hardworking and affordable, and are just great carpenters! I am grateful for their great work and will hire them again!

Dan from National Furniture really knows what he is doing. He is a master carpenter with tons of experience, including wood floors. Dan refinished a tv chest for me and painted a bedroom nightstand. Honestly, the tv chest looks better than it did new, and Dan made the nightstand into a nice piece of furniture (he did not have much to work with). The price was very good, the service excellent, and the finished product great. Dan and his associate are very pleasant as well. The AFTER photos don't really do the piece justice.

Extremely happy with everything about Brian. He was responsive, prompt (came same day), quoted the most reasonable price and dependable. I had an issue with my Badger 100 garbage disposal and Brian beat all other quotes out of the water, while not jeopardizing his expertise and workmanship. He installed a new disposal and was very competitively price but most importantly, asked about my issue and recommended a higher model. I've had issues with Badger 100 in the past - they don't last and I'm very meticulous about what goes down the drain. I've worked with tradesmen/carpenters/construction companies in the past and knew the labor involved was not extensive. Brian was honest, personable and I'd highly recommend him for any project you have. He's versed in many capacities. In fact, I would refer him to anyone looking for services. Watch out for companies that want to charge you over $150-$250 for a small project. Research your issue and get a quote from K7. So glad I found him on Thumbtack!!! Highly recommend.

We needed to replace our kitchen floor. Not the tile but the entire floor. It was time to remodel our kitchen. We interviewed several different contractors. P&L Construction was the clear winner. When you hire P&L (which you should) you get more than Paul and Lester. They bring with them highly skilled carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters and anyone else necessary to do what you need and do it very well. We were completely clueless about what we wanted. We knew we wanted to move the clothes washer and dryer away from the counter area in the kitchen. Paul was our primary point of contact and saw we were confused about what we wanted to do with the kitchen, the washer and dryer, and the adjoining pantry and powder room. Paul made several suggestions to get us started. He was always cautious about the costs and made some suggestions that would save us money. Paul gave us an itemized estimate on the costs separated by carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc. P&L’s crew came in and completely rebuilt our kitchen area. When the floors, tile, cabinets, windows, moving and concealing the washer/dryer and other improvements were done the house looked like new. We were so impressed with the quality of the work that P&L did we hired them to do the rest of our home. Our house is now beautiful. It’s notable that the suggestions that Paul gave us are complimented the most when friends come by to see our new home. You would have a tough time finding anyone better than P&L Construction when it comes to quality, pride in their work, and most importantly results that will impress you. I’d give them 10 Stars.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
