I needed a videographer to tape a play at the last minute and Joe came through with flying colors. He showed up even earlier than expected to make sure he was properly set up, showed great expertise in getting all the shots without ever having seen the show before, went above and beyond in editing the footage, and we got our copy within four days. I would definitely recommend this company.

Isaiah is fantastic! He helped us film Dr. Robert Pape, Obama's foreign policy advisor, at the University of Chicago. So obviously, we needed someone who could get the job done right. Isaiah is professional, accommodating, patient, and creative. I coordinated the filming from Shanghai and thought the time difference would affect our logistics, but Isaiah was incredibly responsive and easy to communicate with. Overall, Isaiah delivered a high quality product and was a pleasure to work with. I wholeheartedly recommend him. Anh

Patricia was absolutely wonderful! Not only is her work extremely professional, but she is so nice and personable and makes the makeup and hair experience an absolute pleasure. Also, we ran into a snag where we needed to shoot our film for another day and asked her with less than half a day notice if she could come again the next day... and she happily complied. I could not recommend Patricia more! :)

KMc was great to work with. On the day of the event, their videographer came early and took video of the hall from different angles. During the event, he not only captured all the important moments, he also had guests share special messages. KMc kept us up to date on the video editing and were receptive to the changes we requested. Once the final edits were put together, we received the finalized copy within a week. Thanks for everything!

Linda and her crew sought out to make sure the "Haight Ashbury: The Beat of a Generation Documentary," to the finish. A beautiful victory the film made selection at the Beverly Hills Film Festival (among other festivals) that would lead to Cannes Market and an International Distribution deal. Without the dedication of her staff (Scott Baker editor) the film would not have been so successful. I now hope to continue with a new project. Weld Conley Executive Producer...

Ed was fantastic... I cannot recommend him enough - from the professionalism, to the creativity, time management, flexibility, and dedication to the project - he was flawless throughout the entire process. We had a lot of specifications and without hesitation he created solutions when presented with constraints. Ed delivered the final product a week ahead of schedule and exceeded expectations at every opportunity. Without a doubt, Ed will be my first call for all future projects. Ed is truly in a league of his own. A class act, incredible videographer, and brilliant team member - Ed is a master in his craft and Homesick Blues Productions is by far the best decision you can make for your film project.

We booked Kevin at the last minute to film our wedding ceremony, and he did a FANTASTIC job. There were so many last minute details, that we didn't get everything taken care of, but Kevin made the video stuff very easy. His post-production skills are awesome, too. Everyone LOVES our highlight video. Even our friend who does event planning in TN for a living said it was one of the best highlight videos she had seen. Overall, this exceeded our expectations and even our hopes. Strong recommend to anyone who is considering booking him. Some details on our job: Mainly indoor filming. Large wedding party. We got a highlight video and a full ceremony video. We didn't book the video for the reception, just ceremony.

I so enjoyed working with Dave Flores Productions on my promotional video project. From the outset Dave was attentive, personable, flexible and a consummate professional. He and his crew went above and beyond the “call of duty” offering some extras that exceeded my expectations. He graciously accommodated my schedule and project requests and worked seamlessly with the location venues staff. His footage was crisp and his shots were thoughtfully executed. I would use Dave again and highly recommend his services.

I had Mike do the filming and editing for a promotional video for a concert I was co-producing. My requests were very simple, and Mike went above and beyond to make the video turn out great. His attention to detail and professionalism were fantastic. He was also very collaborative and did a great job of synthesizing my ideas while adding his own creative touch.

Drake is AMAZING. My wedding was March 11, 2017 and he made it so special. We were given the raw footage of the ceremony the same day and it looked amazing. Within 48 hours is had an edited copy. He was always very responsive and was available for calls with my husband and I. The day of the wedding he was on time set up and prepared. He stayed until the end of the reception which was great. He also took pictures in order to put them on the disk. Thank you Drake.

We recently married and were fortunate to have Karen and Larry videotape and edit our wedding. Not only are they nice people, they are also very talented videographers. They worked well with the wedding coordinator, photographers, DJ, the wedding party and the guests. They worked ALL day and everyone was impressed with their laid back style and professionalism. Although we wanted to see the video as soon as possible, Karen and Larry assured us that it would be better to wait until after they did the majority of the editing. They were right and the video is something special that we will enjoy and pass on to our children and grandchildren to enjoy. We cannot thank them enough for this beautiful wedding video!

I am writing on behalf of my operatic comedy group Forte Chicago. White Fox Cinema recorded two of our full-length, live shows, The Sausage Show & Other Bites in May 2016 and Winter Whisper in February 2017. They were extremely easy to work with and were always prompt and courteous in their communication before and after the performances as well as in their arrival at the venues. They provided a high quality video recording that captured the wide array of spectacle and color we use in our shows as well as our operatic sounds in these small venues. We loved how they were able to capture several angles and seamlessly tie them together in an awesome video edit. I have nothing but good things to say about these guys and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a timely, professional, and high-quality product!

Michael and the team at vidart did a wonderful job. The video turned out looking like a Hollywood film, everyone was punctual, communicative, and unlike other companies, they gave us a flat rate and did not overbill as tends to be common with others we have hired in the past! Alexa and James at their studio were a pleasure to work with and edited our film with the utmost patience and care, asking questions and making sure they delivered what we wanted, I can't say again how incredible our video turned out from the titles, to the transitions, to the music, it was perfect. I have worked with several videography companies in the past but vidart is probably the best I have ever worked with and will save you a lot of money too as they charge a great deal less than other companies and I highly recommend them for any videography or video editing.

Being a professional media buyer myself, I've dealt with many different film crews/companies over the years, some good & some average. Buller Media was FANTASTIC to work with. We received a sweet deal (again, I'm a buyer for a large pharmaceutical company) and we had a great experience with Steve and his crew. They showed up on time, worked on our tight schedule, gave the talent great direction and treated everyone with respect. Thank you for making our project in Chicago a success!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

    • Package 1: $1,400
      • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
      • Two cameras with audio equipment.
      • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
      • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
    • Package 2: $1,800
      • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
