These guys are great. We are so happy we found them after 3 years of sub-standard lawncare for our condo. We will be using Juan and his team for as long as we are in the building. They are highly recommended and do fantastic work. Good value too.

Domingo reached out to me regarding a large landscaping project and was happy to break it down into smaller projects and work around my schedule. The work is top notch and I will be using him for all my landscaping needs going forward. Thank you!

Paul, owner of PTL Landscaping, is truly great to work with! I needed my 95-year old aunt's lawn to be taken care of since I live an hour away and was selling her home. The close was postponed 3 times and Paul took care of the lawn each time I called him - sometimes at the last minute. There are tons of landscaping companies in the Bensenville area. I highly recommend PTL Landscaping because I experienced excellent customer service and fair prices by a truly caring individual whom I had called via the Thumbtack website. Thank you so much Paul you helped me when I was going through a difficult time. Susan Malizia

I loved the fact they were 2 hardworking college entrepreneurs. They were professional, on time, communicative and eager to please. Their cost was the best out there. They also perform other jobs such as moving and landscaping. I would recommend them to all out there and would not hesitate to call upon them again.

Jimmy has been out to our house twice now to mow the lawn. I'm quite happy with the results and am thinking of using Jimmy and his team for larger landscaping projects. Overall Jimmy is easy to work with and I continue to use his services.

This is the first time I used EM Landscaping for Spring Cleanup, and was more than satisfied with their work. The yard looked better than ever. When there was a delay because of weather, I was contacted to let me know when they would be able to come out. They did the work on the day they said they would and I was very satisfied. I would be happy to recommend EM Landscaping to anyone and will use them again for future jobs. I was also very satisfied using Thumbtack to find a professional and that I could also pay online. The entire experience was excellent.

This turned out so much better than I expected. We had a list of a lot of smaller things to get done including a decorative tree replaced but also wanted to turn what was a swamp on the side of our house where nothing would grow into a nice summer seating area by having it regraded and install an architectural paver and stone combination. Kevin was exceptional on the upfront work with me on the design, and also helped with recommendations given our property was complicated due to tight boundaries. Compared to other landscaping companies I've dealt with, Kevin was HIGHLY responsive and super easy to work with. The pricing was fair given the complexity, and the crew was great to work with. They were exceptionally neat and the work was done much quicker than I expected. We love it and would highly recommend Apropos inc! I'll let the pictures do the talking from here.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE! We could not have been more pleased with the hard work and dedication of Jose and his crew. Rain and all, they provided such a clean look to our landscaping. I am sure we will receive many compliments from our neighbors and those driving by on how nice our landscaping is. Carolina was wonderful to work with going around our busy schedules. She is very responsive... no waiting for answers. I have dealt with many landscapers here, in Wisconsin and Iowa and hands down, this company is the best. We look forward to working with them again. Many thanks for such wonderful service!

Mr. Ciraulo was professional and thorough with his quotation. Answered all of my questions as I have pets and was concerned for their health. His products are pet safe and leaves notices when applications of product are made to the lawn. Excellent experience and hired his company for my lawn service.

Ray Kay’s lawn service was awesome - he was very responsive and great with communication. Also really appreciated the Veteran’s discount. The work was done in budget and made our tight deadline of cleaning up our landscaping and weeding before our family party. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their service to a friend or neighbor - and I plan on using them again in the future!

Fantastic service responsive and very fair pricing. Highly recommend this irrigation service. We had several quotes and many wouldn’t even come out because we didn’t have a previous contract with them. They were professional and diagnosed the problem right away. Received a detailed estimate and then even came back right away again when we needed more help with an unrelated problem. Other companies we called gave us a flat per hour rate and couldn’t even estimate the amount of time required and they are 4 star companies. Use this company- you will not be sorry. Even my picky husband was thrilled.

Joni Pawlek of My Secret Garden redesigned my garden, and landscaped my back yard. She had great ideas, incorporating my ideas, and improving on them. The flowers she brought were beautiful, and healthy...they were thoughtfully placed in areas perfect for them in appearance, and based on their needs. After she finished with the back, I had her redesign the front of the house. Joni was a pleasure to work with. Pleasant, professional, and prompt. It was a good experience for us, and we will continue to give her our landscaping business.

So far so good with our new landscaper! We had new sod laid, some new bushes planted and an overall spring maintenance, including new mulch. Yuritzy was responsive and the contract was detailed and through regarding the services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
